Learning Styles/Domains

Day 1 We will sit on the carpet and read the story. The children will be able to respond to
the pictures in the book. After the story, split the class in half and do our small activity. The
children will be asked about the book and what they observed about the ocean. After the
book observation, half of the class will be invited over to the tables where we will have
materials available to make their own jellyfish in the sea! The other half of the children will
be with their teacher.Children will choose their color that they want to put in their ocean
water bottle. In their water bottle they will shake it up to mix the color. Children will be
encouraged to explore the materials and add sparkles to the water if they choose and
explore their project with the jellyfish, colors, and sparkles.
Day 2 We will review what we did on day one and read the story again. We will do the
same thing by separating the children in half and do our canvas project. We will lay two
canvases out for each group and have they children paint with watercolors whatever they
want. They will pint the entire canvas multiple colors. After they are painted we will have
them add glue to their paintings and add a pinch of salt each we will explain that the glue
makes the colors rise from the paper and the salt creates a 'starburst' look. We will then set
them to dry and do the next group.

Explain how this activity is DAP:

Visual/Spatial

Children are naturally curious. This activity will allow children to explore the colors of
water coloring and water colors and apply their knowledge in a creative manner. The
project is open ended and process based.

Extensions/
Modifications
If children seem very
interested in the concepts
of jellyfish, we will create
and explore colors and
jellyfish in the classroom
by them playing with their
water bottle ocean

Closure/Transitions:
As the children finish, they will put their finished bottles in their cubbies to take home. The
children can use the wet wipes to wash off if they get messy. The children will be free to
enjoy the rest of their time playing in class or playing with their water bottles when the glue
on the lid is dry.

Assessment:
The teacher will observe the children and document through the use of anecdotal notes the
abilities of the children to listen to the story, discuss their observations, and apply their
knowledge of the ocean and jellyfish to the art project.
