WrittenReflection#2:TheParade
TheobjectoftheTheParadeassignmentissupposetobefun,itillustratescharacter,
andfurthersthestudent'simagination.TheParadefirstthingtodoistousepencilanderaserto
illustrateeachoftheobjectivesourceandplacedforeachstudent(thereareabouttendifferent
objectives).Eachstepofthetenobjectshavesomespecificdirections.Thefirststepisdrawing
frommemory(thestudentsdrawthemselvesholdingaflagwiththestudent'snameonit).The
secondstepisdrawingfromprevisualization(studentswillcreateacharacterfromtheir
imaginationeitherscarytohappyandsignificanttothestudents).Thethirdstepisverbalto
visual(threecharactersthataredescribedverballyandthestudentswillcreatethecharactersto
thesespecificdescriptions).Thefourthstepisvisualtovisual(readingandviewthecharacters
fromMauriceSendakinthebook
TheWildThings
,andcreatingacharacterexactorwithsome
ofthesameelementsfromthesecharacters).Thefifthstepisdoingaguideddrawingthrough
observation(asanotherstudentdirectstheotherstudentstocreateacharacterbylisteningtothe
otherperson's,andthestudentswillimagineandcreatingtheirowncharacter).Thesixthstepis
drawingwithcontourlines(drawingblindbylookingbackandforwardforasplitsecondand
creatingacharacterwiththecontourlinesorshapes).Theseventhstepisobservationaldrawing
combinedwithdrawingobservational(drawinganobjectandcreatingitfromthestudents
imagination,butastheobjectisincharacterform).Theeighthstepisartfromart(addinga

horse,andcreatingandcopingasimilarpictureofanhorsefromareference).Theninthstepis
thestudent'spersoninvention(creatingsomethingtheyrandomlywanttofinishandendingthe
paradewith).Thenfinally,thetenthstepisaddingandcreatingtheforegroundandbackground
oftheparadelineup.Ifthestudentshavetimetheycanexperimentwithdifferentmaterialsto
enhanceTheParadeartpiece.
IthinkthatTheParadeartprojectwouldbeagreatprojecttointroducetomiddleand
elementaryschoolstudentsbecauseithelpstoexpandandexpressesthestudentsimagination
whichemphasizingcreatingsomethingthroughdifferentaspects.Ionlynegativethingis
utilizingthisprojectforhighschoolersbecausetheywouldbeuninspiredandhaveahardtime
doingthisproject.Whichtheyarealwayslookingatthemselvesthroughtheirpeerseyes,and
wouldmakethemfeellittletheyarechildish.Theprojecthelpsthestudentsexpresstheirdeeper
emotionsofsomethingthattheymaybeafraidof,isjoyfulabout,orresembleseventsintheir
lives.Idonotthinkthattherewouldnotbeanyproblemswithanyresourcesdoingthisproject
becausealotofthematerialsarebasicartsupplies,andtheresourceswillbeeasilyaccess
throughallschools.
Iwouldfirsthavethestudentsresearchandbringindifferentthingsthattheycan
referencefromlikeaphotosinamagazines,newspapers,orontheweb.Iwouldgraduallyget
studentsinterestedindrawingdifferent,weird,anduniquecharactersfromalldifferentrealms.
Forinstance,likefantasy,sciencefiction,orrealisticcharacterstheyhaveseen.ThenIwould
havethestudentsutilizingthecharacterstheyhavedrawnbeforeandimplementaspects
(elements)intheirart.Ithinkitmightbeimportanttodoresearchanddrawingfirst,sotheycan

havetheknowledgeabouttheirsources,itwillhelpthestudentshaveasenseofobjectivesthey
havelookedat,andhelpthemformabettersenseoftheirimagination.
