Professional Practice Experience

My first PPE site is located at Greene Memorial Hospital. I have had the opportunity
to learn about Kettering Health Network as a whole, I was able to spend the morning
with Registration checking in labs imaging, outpatient surgery. I learned more about
the Epic system and the Epic HIMs department. Medical records showed us the
connection from registration to scanning, indexing, and QA process. I was also
exposed to Analysis and the Release of Information processes. I have learned that
the Acute Care facility has many interesting areas of opportunity and although HIM
is not dealing with direct patient care, the role is still very important and valuable to
both the patient and the facility. The PPE also allows for experience in job shadowing
and learning about Coding, Transcription, Chart Correction and Physician
Notification. It has been a great experience to make the connections in the
processes related to HIM from the start to finish.
My second PPE site is at TCN Behavior Health Services in Xenia Ohio. I worked in the
Medical Records Department and shadowed the Director of Quality Control. I
learned that the infrastructure is somewhat different between the outpatient setting
and the Hospital settings. Although it may be the same concept it is in a much
smaller level. Many of the employees do many jobs instead of just one. I spent a
day scanning and inputting the data into the patients charts. I processed drug
screenings and reconciled lab billing. I also did chart deficits. I went through a
report and found charts that needed signed then emailed the counselors and staff
members that had charts to sign off on and let them know through emails.
