Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
The Maize
Maize or corn is a cereal crop grown widely around the world. It was first planted by
the Native Americans. The crop then grew popular in Europe and other parts of the
world. It is now the staple food for the Mexicans. They usually have corn in most of
their dishes. There are about 50 species of maize, with different colours, textures,
shapes and sizes.
Maize is a tall grass. The leafy stalk of the plant produces ears which contain
seeds called kernels. The ear is the female part and the tassel that looks like silk is
the male part. Maize grows well in a hot and wet climate like our country. It also
grows well in cold, hot, dry or wet conditions.

Maize kernels are processed into cornstarch and corn oil. They are used in
cooking. Cornstarch can be treated to produce corn syrup which is a sweetener.
Other food that uses corn as an ingredient includes popcorn, cornflakes and tortilla
which looks like potato chips. We also use baby corn in cooking, too. In Western
cuisine, there is corn on the cob to go with steak.
