GENERAL
‘This document contains information on insulated, single core cables
for medium voltage, with a general design based on the IEC 60502-
2 standard. The following sections provide detailed information
about the compositions of these cables
Mainly the following is guaranteed for the insulation:
‘Thermo-stabilty at 90°,
Lightness (in order to guarantee easy handling).
‘Minimum water absortion, guaranteeing resistance to the
formation of water tees.
High mechanical propoerties
High dielectric strength (520 kVimm a 20°C),
Chemical stability,
Resistance up to 130°c to temporary overloads.
‘Minimum dielectric losses fe. 9
Lack of partial discharges.
CN employs preferable XLPE reticulated polyethylene as insulation
material fr its Azotene MV cables, the specifications and properties,
‘of which are defined later.
CONDUCTOR
“The conductors in these cables consist of annealed copper or
aluminium wire strands, class 2 UNE 21022 standard corresponding
‘to the IEC 60228 standard, normally compacted, sa that greater
electrical field uniformity i achieved through a more homogeneous
surface, together with a reduction on their diameter.
‘The values of the maximum electrical resistance at 20°C and 90°C
are given in the technical data tables.
{As far as the wire composition specification is concerned, these are
Jn accordance with the values indicated on the following sheet.
INSULATION
ECN employs XLPE, the polymer base for this materia isthe well-
known polyethylene that is widely used asa cable insulation because
ofits excellent dielectric, mechanical and physical-chemical properties.
‘The reticulation process also provides it with thermal stability by
converting it from thermo-plastic to thermo-stable, which enables
‘this insulation to operate continuously with the conductor at 90°C,
and also t support 130°C during temporary overload conditions
land 250°C in short circuit situations

30) 31 5NON-METALLIC SCREENS
The conductors of MY cables with XLPE insulation are screened with
2 polymer material having the function of homogeneously
tlistributing the electric field by making the contact surface between,
‘the conductor and the insulation uniform, It prevents the formation
of occlusions and micro-pores in this zone, producing discharge-
free cables
‘This materials technically and physially-chemically compatible
with the insulation to which itis intimately bonded
Its specific insulation resistance at 20°C i ess than $000 Siem and
‘at 90°C less than 25000 Liem. The screen, which is applied aver the
insulation has similar properties and functions.
ECN manufactures its MV XLPE cables in a triple extrusion process
through the simultaneous application of the insulation and the two
semiconductor screens.
‘The reliability ofthe cables produced in this way is very high, since
any contamination caused during intermediate operations and
handling is avoided.
Inaccordance with the applicable standards, ECN manufactures its
‘ables with the second semiconductor either strippable or completely
boned
METALLIC SCREENS
“These include all those metallic elements that have the function of,
electrically protecting the cable, they have various function to
perform, the most important of which are described below:
To establish a racial electric field, so that a uniform, symmetric
distribution of the electric force in the insulation is obtained.
To limit any mutual influences between cables in close proximity
To drain short-circuit currents to ground,
“The metallic screen design that is normally employed is that of 16
COMPONENTS FOR SEALING
OUT MOISTURE AND SEPARATORS
Sealing Tape
‘The design of MV Cables requires longitudinal sealing to moisture,
both in the metallic sreen zone (most habitual design) and in the
conductor zone.
In such eases, ECN Cable Group Incorporates inflatable tapes and
threads into thelr cables.
Separators
Polyester tape around the metallic screen
INTERNAL SHEATHS
If the cable is armoured and extruded filling material and an internal
PVC covering forthe armour seating are placed over the separators.
METAL ARMOUR
When the specific instalation conditions require mechanical
protection, metalic elements are incorporated into the cables, which
have the function of providing mechanical protection (cnocks and
rodent attacks etd). In the case of single core cables, aluminium
armour is employed, The types af metal armour that are infrequent
lire are as follows:
= Metal strip armour
Wire armour
EEN generally employs the first alternative,
OUTER SHEATHS
‘The cable is terminated by providing it with an outer sheath of PVC
(Polyvinyl Chioride) or polylefine, which will protect the cable from
any harmful outside action. The more significant properties of these
‘two types of covering are listed below:
PVC outer sheath properties

The maximum permanent current values are expressed in the technical
data sheets forthe cables and are calculated in accordance with the
installation conditions that are considered to be normal (typical
conditions). Such instalation conditions are defined at the end of
this section, together with any special installation conditions.
When selecting the conductor section, itis also necessaty to take
into consideration the following)
8) The maximum temperature that is produced in the cable with
permanent load, overload and short circuit conditions.
‘The maximum temperature assigned to the XLPE-insulated MV cable.
In permanent service: 30°C
Under overload conditions: 130°C
