What are the names of these shapes?
Learning Objectives (Instructional Objectives)
After completing the lessons in this unit, students will be able to:
Identify specific shapes
Draw specific shapes
Recognize shapes in the environment
Tennessee State Standards
Revised TN-ELDS Four-Year-Old (PK.G)
Mathematics: Geometry
Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, star)
PK.G.2. Identify several basic shapes.
PK.G.5. Identify shapes in the real world environment.
PK.G.6. With guidance and support, create and name new shapes formed when putting two shapes together (i.e. two right triangles of
the same size put together would make a rectangle). (re-teaching)
Vocabulary squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons and star
Materials/resources
crayons
worksheets
precut construction paper shapes
Shape app on iPad (if time permits or for sue in the classroom)

Instructional Procedures
Introduction
Identifying shapes is a fundamental math skill. Understanding shapes allows the connection between the shape itself and the object
out in the world.
Introduction
Introducing shapes
Pretest Identifying Shapes Hold up shapes and ask him to identify
Record Data What are his oral responses? Use results to help guide pre teaching of vocabulary
Pre Teach Vocabulary - Show the shape and the name of the shape in print
Developmental Activities
What is a shape? Can you name some shapes? Can you draw some shapes?
Drawing Activity
The student will practice drawing the shapes by following the dotted lines, then a second time with guiding less
lines, using crayons
Shape Identification Activity
The teacher will give the student a worksheet and read the directions
The student will follow the oral directions by using the right color to color the shapes. (student knows his colors)
Conclusion.
Post test
Redo pretest
Shape Walk
Take the student on a shape walk to find shapes in and around the classroom/school.

After the shape walk, reflect on the shapes that were found.
Record Data
Addressing Learners Diverse Needs
Formative/Summative Assessment
Formative The student will be taught the shapes orally, visually, and in print ( for exposure). He will practice
drawing, discussing, and identifying shapes during the lesson.
Summative The pretest will identify what shapes the student already knows. The posttest will show if he has
mastered and can apply his knowledge.
Data Analysis and Reflection on Planning/Instruction; Plans for Re-teaching (as applicable)
The data collection from the teacher, pretest and posttest (the students formative and summative assessments results)
will determine if additional teaching is needed for mastery of objectives and standards.
Reteaching plans
Creative Activities
Create a shape book Match the label with the object, paste the label, write the label, and paste the correct shape on to a
folded white sheet of paper to make a book.
Creating designs with precut shapes, such as, a house or robot and matching shapes to puzzles.
