Fluency
Tiana enjoyed learning her site words through
the Basketball Court Word activity and I think
she really improved with identifying and
strengthening her word recognition in isolation.
She originally scored a total percentage of 80 in
September. On her post-assessment, she scored a
95% on her Primer list. I wanted to see how she
would do on the 1st grade list. In September, she
scored a total of 50% on the list. In November,
she improved on the 1st grade word list with a
total of 65%. Tiana also improved with her
phrasal fluency while reading and emphasized
punctuation a lot more as we spent time working
through it together. At first, she read really
quickly which would cause her to mispronounce
a lot. This was done through a rhyme that we
came up with together about basketball being
her favorite sport. We would repeat this together
before beginning her site words, since it was a
basketball theme. I was extremely proud of her
improvements with her fluency with site word
knowledge and phrasal fluency.

Word Knowledge
Tiana has trouble on her spelling with blends,
nasals, and short vowels. This was one of the
biggest challenges that both Tiana and I faced
together. Early on, I realized that she was having
a tough time when we first began working on
blends. We started with the SL/SN/SH blend.
Yet, after that lesson, I felt that there was some
disconnect between what we were doing on my
end. I wasnt creating lessons that connected the
Push and Say with Word Study and into her
reading practice. On her end during the push and
say activity, she would attempt to create words
that dont exist even after we did examples
together. She struggled with understanding how
blends on the push and say are two letters that
stay together and arent separated. She would
begin to get frustrated that she couldnt take the
sn blend apart into two separate letters. Tiana
also struggled with the vowel change in the
middle of the Push and Say. After discussing
with Dr. Snow the situation, I wanted to start
with short vowels (a,I,o). I made sure to create
solid connections between her Push and Say,
Word Study, and Reading. We continued her
instruction with short a (-AT and AN) then into
short o (-OP,-OT, and OG). She really
progressed through the vowels well and it
showed me that we shouldve started working
with that skill first. By making sure that all the
activities worked together, it made the lesson a
lot more fluent and moved quickly. I found out
that Tiana is diagnosed with ADHD. When I
spoke with Mrs. Hurt (CT), she said that
keeping her attention and her retention of
information is one of Tianas biggest struggles.

Reading & Writing
I loved watching Tiana write because it was
something that she thoroughly enjoyed doing. At
first, her sentences were all squished together
and there was often no punctuation. We didnt
get
to
do
a
lot
of
activities with her writing because we would run
out of time, but she really showed improvements
throughout the semester. Now, she is able to
correctly place periods at the end of her
sentences, along with spaces in between each
word. We often did writing sorts after her word
study because she enjoyed writing and I believe
that helps with retention as well.
This is her writing sample from the first lesson
we had together (10/7).
This is her writing sample on 11/11.

Her reading skills also improved. At first, she

would read through the books extremely fast,
missing words and not necessarily working on

work and progress while we worked together.

comprehension skills. I had her work on taking a

deep breath as she turned the page, in order to
help her slow down and not speed read. As she
progressed through the semester, she began
slowing down. She also started utilizing the
pictures to build comprehension and create
inferences as she read. She loved not showing
me the pictures and had me guess what was
going to happen next. I would say something
wrong, then ask her what she thought was going
to happen. I said she was allowed to look only at
the picture on the next page. Tiana always
wanted to be right, so she would do the best she
could to make a solid prediction. Tiana began
reading at a Level E text and was able to
conquer one Level F text from Reading A-Z.
There needs to be improvement on her ability to
focus on each individual word while reading and
trying not to get extremely ahead of her own
self. I think if I got to spend more one-on-one
time with her during the week more than once, it
would help her with retention and conquering
these skills. I think she really needs those extra
meetings to catch her up on a couple of skills. . I
loved watching her compassion for writing and
her willingness to read and try her best!
