Tocreateafamilywithnestedandsharedcomponents,sharethefamiliesbeforeyounesttheminahostfamily.Thehostfamilydoesnotneedto
beasharedfamily.
Whenyoucreateanestedfamilyofsharedcomponents,thefirstdecisionyouneedtomakeisinwhatcategorythehostfamilywillbelong.This
decisionhasmanydownstreamimplicationsfortagging,scheduling,andODBCinformation,asdescribedintheexamplesbelow.

WindowFamilyExample
Agangedwindowunitiscreatedasanestedandsharedfamily.Inthiscase,thelargecenterwindowwasusedasthehostfamilyandthe2side
windowswerenestedassharedfamilies.Thiswindowisintendedtobebuiltonsiteusingthesubcomponentsthatarepurchasedasseparateunits
bythebuilder.ThefamilywassavedasTriple_window.rfa.

Noticethateachwindowistaggedandscheduledseparately.However,noticethegangedwindowname,Triple_window,islistedwiththe
subcomponents.Thiswindowalsorepresentsthemainwindowofthe3windowset.
Intheexampleshownbelow,thesametriplewindowfamilywascreated,butwithanewwindowfamilyusedasthehostfamilyandboththefixed
windowandthedoublehungwindowsloadedassharedfamilies.Noticethedifferenceinthetaggingandscheduling.

Gangedwindowfamilystartedasanewfamily
Intheexampleshownabove,noticethehostfamilyscheduleswitheachofthe3subcomponentwindows.Ifthisisnotyourdesignintent,you

Toshareafamilybeforenestingit
1.Openafamilytobeshared,andclickCreatetab Propertiespanel
(FamilyCategoryandParameters).
Attention:Annotation,profile,andinplacefamiliescannotbesharedfamilies.
2.IntheFamilyCategoryandParametersdialog,underFamilyParameters,selectShared.
Althoughyoucansetmostfamiliesassharedfamilies,itonlybecomesrelevantwhenthefamilyisnestedintoanotherfamilyandloadedintoa
project.
3.ClickOK.
4.Saveandclosethefamily.
Tonestsharedfamiliesinahostfamily
1.Openthehostfamilyorstartanewfamily.
2.Openthefamiliesthatyouwanttonest,andsharethem.
3.Loadandplaceanestedcomponentwithinthehostfamily.
4.Repeatthisprocessforeachnestedcomponent.
5.Savethefamily.
