Essential Question: How are coaches affecting the lives of our athletes?
Working Thesis: Coaches are influential roles in the lives of athletes as the actions of the coach
can either diminish or enhance the spirit of the lives they affect.
Refined Thesis: With a realistic perspective on coaching, people should see how the ethics,
profession, and special relationships a coach has to make affects the lives of athletes.

Lai, Yi-Ling, and Almuth McDowall. International Coaching Psychology Review. United
Kingdom: British Psychological Society Australian Psychological Society Interest Group
in Coaching Psychology, 2 Sept. 2014. Web. 17 Feb. 2016.
The article International Coaching Psychology Review shows how coaches have effects
on the athletes by the relationships and connections that a coach has established. The article goes
one on one with many different coaches on talks about how coaches react to certain routines and
protocols. Coaches in the interviews talk about how they do feel that a sense of Sports
Psychology that the athletes, and even the coaches, have that is needed to be sparked for
motivation. The article even discusses that there are main points that a coach acts on for
improving his team if necessary, such as, team satisfaction, success of the team/organization, and
a reflection of a changed attitude of the team. The article is good for this topic because it puts the
sense of coaching into a psychological view which is huge for confidence.

Mathis, Terry L. "Coaching: The Third Component of Safety Excellence." Coaching: The Third
Component of Safety Excellence. ProAct Safety, 4 Jan. 2016. Web. 17 Feb. 2016.
The article Coaching: The Third Component of Safety Excellence talks about the
negatives and positives of having great coaches and organizations versus the principles of single
coaches who take a more commanding style. The article discusses that coaching tries to create
relationships and cooperation from their younger athletes as they both reach for their desired
goals. The articles portrays that the most successful coaches have rules and standards that the
athletes are subject to follow, not only making the athletes find a routine but only help them
mature in certain actions. The article even goes into saying that the less the personal opinions are
expressed and the relationship of players and coaches do not get off track then less friction is
present. This article is fantastic in the way that it does show the pros and cons of coaches and
their athletes at times.
Mottaghi, Mahmoodreza, Alireza Atarodi, and Zahra Rohani. "The Relationship between
Coaches and Athletes Competitive Anxiety, and Their Performance." Iranian Journal of
Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, n.d.
Web. 17 Feb. 2016.
The article The Relationship between Coaches and Athletes Competitive Anxiety, and
Their Performance talks about the anxiety that the athletes go through on their own whether it is
physical workouts or whether they think they are mentally ready for a game or activity. The
article talks about experiments and techniques that showed that athletes are more under pressure
and stressed when a coach is watching or present. The article also shows that an athlete is more
prone to anxiety when he does not have a set or predetermined goal established, which in sports

is usually designed by the coach. This article is beneficial because it not only shows the athlete
under pressure on his own but shows how coaching can hurt it even worse if done wrong.
Sabock, Michael D., and Ralph J. Sabock. Coaching: A Realistic Perspective. 9th ed.
Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield, 2011. Print.
Coaching: A Realistic Perspective uses so many examples of how a coach influences the
lives of his athletes. The Book goes into the specific role a coach can play in the life of an athlete
going from a mentor, to a trainer, and even to an over crazed fan. The Book shows how a coach
has his own personal life but it also shows that when a successful coach is with his students and
athletes he is 100 percent in their lives. Coaches have traditions and ethics that set them apart and
they influence the lives of their athletes by their attitudes and decision makings to their athletes.
This book has too much beneficial information about how coaches can influence and alter their
athletes not to talk about on this topic.
Terry, P. C., and B. L. Howe. "Coaching Preferences of Athletes." National Center for
Biotechnology Information. School of Physical Education University of Victoria,
1984. Web. 17 Feb. 2016.
The article Coaching Preference of Athletes talks from the athletes perspective in the
fact that it takes experiments from athletes themselves discussing what types of coaches lead to
a more successful performance. The articles uses activities in which the athletes are tested with
different types of coaches one that is more fundamental and has goals and objectives and another
coach that is more carefree. The athletes were then recorded on how each coach affected their
performance and which one they preferred overall. This article is good because of the fact that it
is from an athlete's own words and perspective of how coaches and their styles affect how they
play and function.

"True West." True West (n.d.): n. pag. True Sport: What We Stand to Lose in Our
Obsession to Win. U.S Anti-Doping Agency, 2012. Web. 17 Sept. 2016.
This excerpt from True Sport: What We Stand to Lose in Our Obsession to Win talks
about the importance a coach plays in the lives of athletes both younger and older. The excerpt
even goes on to say that the number one most influential people in our youth today are the
coaches. Coaches are the foundation of the youth to learn leadership, improve their skills, and to
develop character as a person through athletics. The excerpt even goes as far as to show the
negative effects of bad coaching as it degrades the relationship and confidence of the athletes and
it creates an unfair and hostile environment where no one seems to be benefitting. This excerpt is
great because of the importance of coaching on the youth in athletics.
