NAEYC Standard 4:
Using Developmentally Effective Approaches
Candidates understand that teaching and learning with young children is a complex
enterprise, and its details vary depending on childrens ages, characteristics, and the settings
within which teach and learning occur. Candidates understand and use positive relationships and
supportive interactions as the foundation for their work with young children and families.
Candidates know, understand, and use a wide array of developmentally appropriate approaches,
instructional strategies, and tools to connect with children and families and positively influence
each childs development and learning.

The objective of this assignment:


-Demonstrate objective AND subjective writing related to the ECE profession in conjunction
with demonstrating the ability to evaluate a childs development and make curriculum
suggestions/recommendations for promoting positive learning outcomes

Information Source
I used four sources , Milestones for 5-Year-Olds , Arizona Early Learning ,observation
and interview Standard .while observing in her daily routine and speaking with her
parents about her growing development .There is focused many aspect of these different
development areas through her life .Thought observation of these development areas ,it
seems that Z.Y is growing preschool who is on correct path far as development on time

Background Information
a. Z.A is 4 years and seven months old and the oldest child of two .Her little
sister ,is almost a year old .Both of Z.Y parent are working parents :her mom
works at WIC and her dad works an orthopedic company . The social
development she recives is during 3 .5 hours period in head start program with 17
other child
b. Describe childs physical characteristics (size in relationship to others the same
age, health, and abilities)Z.Y is learning to get along with others ,that other
children have feeling like herself ,to share with other children and so much
more .Foe example she spend more than 15 minutes playing in house area with
three friends.Z.Y health She is progressing in all areas of development and she is
very comparable to that of an average developing child. Z.Y ability is very handy

with the scissors .She love to cut and she has realized the technique of using her
fingers ,in scissors to cut paper. Gross motor skill have improved quite excellent
over the 4 year of her life .She walks ,runs ,jumps ,hops and even walks up and
down steps with ease
c. Describe the childs attendance and participation patterns
Z.Y is arrives daily (from 7:30 to 11 Am ) .She has 6 days absent with permeation
{dentist appointment and she was having fever ) . Z.A is one is open to making
friendships by jumping right in there and having fun .ZA seems to enjoy playing
with all the kids but one of her really good friend at the school is MG .They paly
together at the preschool and even sometime outside of the school.
d. Describe behavioral characteristics and performances from the checklist
completed that you feel identify the child as typically developing; atypical
delayed or gifted
According assessment tools ,Z.Y is typically developing .Z.Y followed a routine .
She do well with structure and she learn to adept to it rather well .She have
already begun to learn teacher are the authority in the classroom. According
Milestones for 5-Year-Olds Z.Y has Recognize most letters of the alphabet. Can
count 10 or more objects. Know the names of at least 4 colors. Know what
household objects are used for, such as money, food, or appliances. Want to please
and be liked by their friends, though they may sometimes be mean to others.
Agree to rules most of the time. Show independence. Are more able to distinguish
fantasy from reality but enjoy playing make-believe and dress-up. Carry on a
meaningful conversation with another person. Understand relationships between
objects, such as "the boy who is jumping rope." Use the future tense, such as
"Let's go to the zoo tomorrow!" Often call people (or objects) by their relationship

to others, such as "Bobby's mom" instead of "Mrs. Smith." Talk about or tell
stories. They have little or no trouble being understood by others.

Developmental Performance
a. Describe the childs key areas of interest; support these statements with
observations or examples
ZA was spending most of her free time in Art area She love to draw and color .
Her teacher have said that she always colors in the this up and down repeated
pattern with different colors .She works on staying in the lines ,but she nor seem
color the entire object .She put a variety of color and colors what is complete to
her . Also she love Dramatic play she love to baking the pizza and making cake .
b. Describe the childs areas of limitation; support these statements with
observations or examples
ZY avoids the math area frequently .She Dislikes and avoids activities and games
that involve numbers and counting . When I was observing ZA .Her friend ask ZA
to play together account the coloring bear .ZA doesnt accept to play .ZA has
trouble pointing to and counting each object in a group ZA
c. Describe the childs overall personality/temperament; support these with
observations or examples
ZA is clear that effortful control is linked to positive development, since it has
been associated with lower levels of problem behaviours and has been found to
correlate with and predict low levels of negative emotion, highly committed
compliance, high levels of social competence, and conscience.

d. Conclusion and Recommendations


a. In one paragraph, write your own appraisal of the child based on the
information you have gathered and presentedI focused my attention for

my case study on ZA a 4 years preschooler .I observed his physical


,cognitive and emotional /social development .While observing ZA
behavior and development ,I feel like actively able to understand the
different stage of development and how children grow and become
their unique selves .I found ZA parents to be very helpful .I was easily
able to contact her parent and I received great amount of the
information concerning ZA .
b. Make recommendations for meeting the childs current developmental
needs in the classroom
The teacher should spend more time with ZA in math area .Using new
activity for example learn ZA count food items at snack time (e.g., 5
crackers, 20 raisins, 10 baby carrots). teaching the many aspects of
math: "number sense," geometry (patterns and shapes), measurement,
the language of math, and spatial relations.
c. Make suggestions for family activities that promotes growth in the
future
Use toys or other objects to teach her child the concepts big and little
as well as more and less. For instance, let her child play with plastic
cups in the bathtub and talk about how some cups have more water in
them and some have less.
