HDF 190: FLITE (FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSPIRED TO EXCELLENCE)

URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR
SPRING 2016

SERVICE LEARNING & LEADERSHIP CONTRACT

Goal: To identify and utilize my Gallup Strengths and my Values in an
organizational/interpersonal setting that aligns with the mission, vision, values and
sponsored programs and activities of URIs Center for Student Leadership Development.

Activity: (Detail your plan here)

When it comes to my Strengths, I have much to learn; from their deeper meaning
to their application, I there is much I do not know. But above anything else, I intend to
learn about how I can use my Strengths to in both education and career. So, accomplish
my goal and fulfill this assignment, I will be training and working for the North Woods
Challenge Course to become a Facilitator. Through them, I will be working a group of
peers in my education and fully trained Facilitators whom will guide my learning. As a
Facilitator, I will be capable of learning groups and individuals through both physical and
mental challenges so that they can better understand themselves. Then, through teaching
others, I will learn about myself, my own ways of learning, my own style of leadership
and mentorship. But most of all, I will learn about my real world applications for my
Gallup Strengths.
Now, having completed my training and functioning as a trained Facilitator for
the North Woods Challenge Course, I have learned what it means to mentor a group. I
have learned how to examine people and predict their reactions so that I can better
challenge them and encourage growth. But also, I have learned how to apply my own
Strengths to my education and future career: my top Strength is Deliberate, I am

intentional in everything I do; I create plans and I stick to them, which I used to set
objectives for groups as a Facilitator, but I can apply this to any assignment project or
group in the future. And my second top Strength is Leaner, no matter what I do, I can
always learn from it. Whether learning from guiding a team, or learning in a classroom, I
can and will learn from anything possible.
Through my training as a Facilitator I have a new understanding of my Strengths;
I now understand how to lead a group to improve themselves, while learning from their
process. I now understand my deliberate planning is just as applicable to my class work
and education as it is to leadership and mentoring. I now understand what it means to
encourage growth in others, as it is just as important as growth in myself. And altogether,
this has made me a more effective leader.
