SIOP Lesson Plan Template 3

Topic: Science

Class: 5th Grade

Date: March 20th, 2016

Content Objectives:

Language Objectives:

Students will be able to demonstate their

knowledge of vocabuary words on a photo
presented and in small groups.

Student will be able to correctly discuss and

identify the English vocubality words presented
in relation to the human skeletal system.

Standards:
Concept 1: Structure and Function in Living
Systems
Understand the relationships between
structures and functions of organisms.
PO 1. Identify the functions and parts of the
skeletal system:
protection rib cage, cranium
support vertebrae
movement pelvis, femur, hip
PO 2. Identify the following types of muscles:
cardiac heart
smooth stomach
skeletal biceps
PO 3. Identify the functions
and parts of the nervous system:
control center brain
relay mechanism spinal cord
transport messages nerves

Key Vocabulary:

Materials (including supplementary and adapted):

Skeleton/ el esqueleto
Cranium/ el crneo
Rib cage/ trax
Vertebrae/ vertebra
Pelvis/ la pevlis
Femur/ el fmur
Hip/ la cadera

Photo of blank skeleton (template provided below).

Pencils and scratch paper
Overhead projector

Higher Order Questions:

What are the body parts that protect the skeletal system that protect the body and where are
they identified on the picture?
What are the differences in the following types of muscles: cardiac, smooth, skeletal?
How are the three functions and parts of the nervous system related?

Building Background
In order to build background, I will model and point to the locations of the vocabulary
words defined on the skeletal template. In addition, students will use the knowledge
they already know about their bodies in order to futher their knowledge in this lesson.
Additionally, i will have students work in small groups in order to support all students,
especially ELL's.

Links to Experience:
To link this activity to student's experience, I will have students either draw or discuss
in small groups what they already know about the skeletal system in their own bodies
or what muscles they use on a daily basis. I will ask students if they can provide or
think of any examples such as "I use my hip joint when I kick a soccer ball at soccer
practice!"

Links to Learning:
Students have already learned parts of the brain this year. This lesson will be a
continuation in a similar format t learning the parts and functions of a particular
system.

Key Vocabulary:
Stated above.
SIOP STRATEGIES USED:
1. Clear speech
2. Hands on activity
3. Extended wait time
4. Facial expressions/gestures
5. Modeling
6. Building on prior knowledge
7. Slow speech
8. Repitition
9. Appropriate wait time
10. Positive feedback

Review Key Vocabulary:

To close, I will review the key vocabulary stated above with students, by having
students work in partners to go over the given words.

Review Key Content Concepts:

Additionally to above, I will also hold a class discussion, in which students can ask
questions, share what they have learned. In addition, at this time I will make sure to
revisit making prior connections, such as connections students make with their own
skeletal system in everyday life.
