Overall:
My pins are divided between places I have traveled to and skills I have learned. My skills gained
from these experiences range from social to physical to personal skills. This map is
representative of those things that are important or special to me. I chose moments that held a
deep meaning. It shows that I love to travel and try new things. Hopefully, you can see from this
map that I have or yearn to learn from each special experience I encounter. An adventure is
enhanced by the lessons you learn and knowledge you gain from it. I hope to show some aspects
of these skills in my writing; I hope to be adventurous in hopes of gaining skills for my writing.
Understanding that there will be challenge and I will need correction at some points is pivotal for
growth. Skills learned in my writing will follow me through my career and the rest of my life, so
I want to become the best possible writer.
Skills:
Ballantyne Country Club: Critical Reading
Ballantyne Country Club is where I played Golf on my school team my junior and senior years
of high school. I joined the team not having much experience or knowing much about the game.
This place, along with my team, taught me most of what I know about golf. During the matches,
I would watch the other players on my team to see what skills they performed well and how I
could apply this to my own game. I noticed key details like the player had more open arms for
his swing, which I applied to my swing too. On the weekends, I would watch the pro matches
and examine their games with further improving my game as the goal. For example, the
commentators will look at the swing of someone attending the event and give feedback. They
commented that there needed to be more of a pivot in the back foot of the selected individual. I
used this in my own game and was able to get more distance on my swing. I learned from those
other players and my practices how the game of golf is really played.
Charlotte Field Hockey Club: Composing Processes
This is the complex where I learned to play field hockey. At the time, it was something new and
exciting I had never even heard of before. As I transitioned from a beginner to a more skilled
player, I started to develop a game strategy for each time that I played. I was put in as a midfielder. I had to learn how fast to run to keep up with the other girls, key moments to pass, and
when to play a little rough. I began to see the game plays pan out. This is when I became more
adventurous and tested what else would work well. From this sport, I can use the skills I
developed in future games with similar parameters.
Travel:
verbally communicate. I learned about the people and the conditions they had to live under. This
experience allowed me a greater appreciation for all that I have and the conditions I get the
privilege of living under. I now know how to play with a child or give compassion and
companionship to a hurting woman in Honduras.
West Palm Beach, Florida: Critical Reflection
When I first started college I attended Palm Beach Atlantic University. This is where I learned to
create my daily routine for college and life on my own. I determined when I ate, studied, and
how I managed my time in general. This was starting a new phase of my life, having to define
myself and what I wanted out of college and life. I learned that it was better for me to study in
the library than in my dorm room. I found people in my class that could truly help me study for
my tests and not just hang out together. I discovered that I wanted to be a computer science
major, and I didn't want to minor in business. These are all things that can help me decide what I
can do better this semester and improve in the future years.
UWRT:
I think this class can help me improve my writing and how I see my writing greatly. I hope that I
will get to do more work individually focusing on my writing, but I understand that I will
probably have to share with my peers to achieve the best results for my work. I am slightly
concerned that I will have to present in front of the class a lot, which I do not really enjoy. I
currently have a great relationship with writing; it is an outlet for me. I wrote a research paper I
really enjoyed (that has never happened before) last semester. I now see writing as not something
that I can apply to my passions, not just for English majors. I have always enjoyed using writing
as a form of self-expression. I hope to continue this improved relationship with writing
throughout this course.
