Literacy Sponsorship Map

Overall:
My pins are divided between places I have traveled to and skills I have learned. My skills gained
from these experiences range from social to physical to personal skills. This map is
representative of those things that are important or special to me. I chose moments that held a
deep meaning. It shows that I love to travel and try new things. Hopefully, you can see from this
map that I have or yearn to learn from each special experience I encounter. An adventure is
enhanced by the lessons you learn and knowledge you gain from it. I hope to show some aspects
of these skills in my writing; I hope to be adventurous in hopes of gaining skills for my writing.
Understanding that there will be challenge and I will need correction at some points is pivotal for
growth. Skills learned in my writing will follow me through my career and the rest of my life, so
I want to become the best possible writer.

Skills:
Ballantyne Country Club: Critical Reading
Ballantyne Country Club is where I played Golf on my school team my junior and senior years
of high school. I joined the team not having much experience or knowing much about the game.
This place, along with my team, taught me most of what I know about golf. During the matches,
I would watch the other players on my team to see what skills they performed well and how I
could apply this to my own game. I noticed key details like the player had more open arms for
his swing, which I applied to my swing too. On the weekends, I would watch the pro matches
and examine their games with further improving my game as the goal. For example, the
commentators will look at the swing of someone attending the event and give feedback. They
commented that there needed to be more of a pivot in the back foot of the selected individual. I
used this in my own game and was able to get more distance on my swing. I learned from those
other players and my practices how the game of golf is really played.
Charlotte Field Hockey Club: Composing Processes
This is the complex where I learned to play field hockey. At the time, it was something new and
exciting I had never even heard of before. As I transitioned from a beginner to a more skilled
player, I started to develop a game strategy for each time that I played. I was put in as a midfielder. I had to learn how fast to run to keep up with the other girls, key moments to pass, and
when to play a little rough. I began to see the game plays pan out. This is when I became more
adventurous and tested what else would work well. From this sport, I can use the skills I
developed in future games with similar parameters.

Travel:

Paris, France: Critical Reflection

I have had the chance to visit the beautiful city of Paris a few times. When I first went there, we
went to the typical touristy places, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, etc. After a terrible experience
waiting in line to tour the catacombs for over three hour, it was clear that there were things we
could have done differently to make better use of our time in the city. Whether it was learning
that there were more interesting lesser-known museums or finding a great coffee shop just
around the corner, each time I go to Paris I can learn something new, another way to improve the
trip. My second trip was enhanced by visiting the Versailles Gardens, which was definitely worth
the trip. This always makes me more excited for the time to come knowing it can only get better
with the knowledge I have gained.
Nevers, France: Rhetorical Knowledge
Nevers is the place where I learned to put my knowledge of French language and culture into
action. My Aunt and Uncle married in this small town of France. Most of the family there was
from his side, the ones who lived only a couple of hours away at the most. The majority of them
grew up in small towns and had never heard anyone speak English before my Aunt. This was an
opportunity to improve on my French skills. I used what I had been taught in my school classes
along with things my Aunt told me and what I could gather from my surroundings. I learned a lot
of slang terms, which my schooling had mentioned but my Aunt could give further detail on. It
was mixing the precision of school learning and the flexibility of everyday life. Sometimes the
traditional skills I had been taught in the classroom were not fitting, and I had to adjust my
wording in the moment. Components I had learned in the classroom were more applicable in the
larger cities, where they could understand the brutal American accent. It was a good experience
that deepened my knowledge and passion for everything French.
Lake Como, Italy: Knowledge of Conventions
This was the first time I visited anywhere in Italy. It was completely new to me: the culture, the
people and the land in general. It was a puzzle for me to figure out. Lake Como is a lake
surrounded by villages on all sides. We traveled from one village to another by boat across the
lake. It seemed odd to me that there was a lake in the middle of what seemed like one big
community. As I traveled around, I learned each little area had something unique about it. For
instance, Bellagio is known for its beautiful winding cobblestone pathways. I began to figure out
what each of the town's unique aspects were: one was known for their beautiful jewelry, another
for the delicious Italian foodpizza. Along the way, I also learned about Italian traditions and a
few key terms. It beautiful to gain a deeper understand of how this lake-centered town
functioned.
San Pedro Sula, Honduras: Knowledge of Conventions
This was my first international missions trip. I have grown-up learning French, so this was a
challenge for me. I went to a country where I had to learn everything from scratch. Thankfully,
my friend could help me to understand the people through their body language, movements and a
few beginner terms. I learned that the kids love for you to play with them, even if you can't

verbally communicate. I learned about the people and the conditions they had to live under. This
experience allowed me a greater appreciation for all that I have and the conditions I get the
privilege of living under. I now know how to play with a child or give compassion and
companionship to a hurting woman in Honduras.
West Palm Beach, Florida: Critical Reflection
When I first started college I attended Palm Beach Atlantic University. This is where I learned to
create my daily routine for college and life on my own. I determined when I ate, studied, and
how I managed my time in general. This was starting a new phase of my life, having to define
myself and what I wanted out of college and life. I learned that it was better for me to study in
the library than in my dorm room. I found people in my class that could truly help me study for
my tests and not just hang out together. I discovered that I wanted to be a computer science
major, and I didn't want to minor in business. These are all things that can help me decide what I
can do better this semester and improve in the future years.

UWRT:
I think this class can help me improve my writing and how I see my writing greatly. I hope that I
will get to do more work individually focusing on my writing, but I understand that I will
probably have to share with my peers to achieve the best results for my work. I am slightly
concerned that I will have to present in front of the class a lot, which I do not really enjoy. I
currently have a great relationship with writing; it is an outlet for me. I wrote a research paper I
really enjoyed (that has never happened before) last semester. I now see writing as not something
that I can apply to my passions, not just for English majors. I have always enjoyed using writing
as a form of self-expression. I hope to continue this improved relationship with writing
throughout this course.
