- Honor the ideals and principles of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct
Ethical Responsibilities to Children
I make a commitment to create and maintain safe and healthy settings that foster
childrens social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development and that respect their dignity
and their contributions, as stated in the article. For example, when I was an intern I always made
sure that the environment was safe and healthy for the children at all times. I make a
commitment to ensure that each childs culture, language, ethnicity, and family structure are
recognized and valued in the program, as stated in the article. For example, when I was an intern
I made sure that every child mattered no matter what background they have. I make a
commitment to use assessment instruments and strategies that are appropriate for the
children to be assessed, that are used only for the purposes for which they were designed, and
that have the potential to benefit children, as stated in the article. For example, when I was an
intern I always helped my mentor with assessments, and I made sure that the assessment was

appropriate for that child to be able to get to know that child, and so then I can learn what I need
to do to help that child succeed in school. I make a commitment to care for and educate children
in positive emotional and social environments that are cognitively stimulating and that support
each childs culture, language, ethnicity, and family structure, as stated in the article. For
example, when I was an intern I made sure to include every child, and I would help those
children that did not know English very well whenever they needed help in the classroom. I
make a commitment to involve all those with relevant knowledge (including families and staff)
in decisions concerning a child, as appropriate, ensuring confidentiality of sensitive information.
For example, when Im a preschool teacher I will make sure that I communicate with the
childrens families, and other teachers to make sure that I am making the best decisions for each
child.
Ethical Responsibilities to Families
I make a commitment to develop relationships of mutual trust and create partnerships
with the families we serve, as stated in the article. For example, when I was an intern I always
communicated with the parents to see how their day is going, or I would talk to them about what
their child did that day. I make a commitment to welcome all family members and encourage
them to participate in the program, as stated in the article. For example, when Im a preschool
teacher I will make sure to always invite the family members to events in the classroom, and I
will have parent teacher conferences every month. I make a commitment to acknowledge
families childrearing values and their right to make decisions for their children, as stated in the
article. For example, when I was an intern my mentors would let me know if a parent doesnt
want their child to eat a certain food, and I would make sure to respect the parents decision. I
make a commitment to involve the family in significant decisions affecting their child, as stated

in the article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I will always make sure to involve the
family when making decisions about their child. I make a commitment to informing families of
injuries and incidents involving their child, of risks such as exposures to communicable disease
that might result in infection, and of occurrences that might result in emotional stress, as stated in
the article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I will always make sure that I let the
families know if any occurrences happened with their child.
Ethical Responsibilities to Colleagues
I make a commitment to recognize the contributions of colleagues to our program and
not participate in practices that diminish their reputations or impair their effectiveness in working
with children and families, as stated in the article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I
want to make sure that I always work with my colleagues in a professional manner, and I
will always work with my colleagues that are wanting to help children succeed, and help families
feel involved with their childs education. I make a commitment to let a co-worker know if I
have a concern about their professional behavior, I shall first let that person know of my concern
in a way that shows respect for personal dignity and for the diversity to be found among staff
members, and then attempt to resolve the matter collegially and in a confidential manner, as
stated in the article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I will make sure that I am
always professional in any situation, and I will let a co-worker know that I am concerned about
their professional behavior in a professional way.
Responsibilities to co-workers
I make a commitment to establish and maintain relationships of respect, trust,
confidentiality, collaboration, and cooperation with co-workers, as stated in the article.
For example, when Im a preschool teacher I will make sure to that I establish and

maintain relationships with my co-workers, because I want a positive environment when I

go to work. I make a commitment to share resources with co-workers, collaborating to
ensure that the best possible early childhood care and education program is provided, as
stated in the article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I will always find
resources, and make sure to let my co-workers know that I have found them, and I will
explain to them what kind of resources they are, as well as, how it will help childrens
education. I make a commitment to accord co-workers due recognition of professional
achievement, as stated in the article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I want to
make sure that I let co-workers know of their professional achievement, because I want
them to know that I care.

Responsibilities to employers
I make a commitment to assist the program in providing the highest equality of
service, as stated in the article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I want to
make sure that I always provide the highest equality of service, so then I can show that I
care about the job that I am doing. I make a commitment to do nothing that diminishes
the reputation of the program in which we work unless it is violating laws and regulations
designed to protect children or is violating the provisions of this code, as stated in the
article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I will make sure that I always am
professional at my job, and I will always try to better my program, and not diminish it in
any way. I make a commitment to inform the programs administration or, when
necessary, other appropriate authorities if I have a concern about circumstances or
conditions that impact the quality of care and education within the program, as stated in

the article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I will make sure to always
communicate with the programs administration if I have any concerns.

Responsibilities to employees
I make a commitment to create and maintain a climate of trust and candor that
will enable staff to speak and act in the best interest of children, families, and the field of
early childhood care and education, as stated in the article. For example, when Im a
preschool teacher I will make sure that I always enable staff to speak and act in the best
interest of children, families, and the field of early childhood care and education, because
then we can meet the goals of helping children succeed in school. I make a commitment
to encourage and support continual development of employees in becoming more skilled
and knowledgeable practitioners, as stated in the article. For example, when Im a
preschool teacher I want to make sure that I always help employees become more
skilled, so then they can be the best teachers they can possibly be to help better childrens
education. I make a commitment to make decisions concerning children and programs, I
shall draw upon the education, training, experience, and expertise of staff members, as
stated in the article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I want use my knowledge
that I learned in my college experience, and my internship experience so then I know that
I am making the best decisions for childrens education.

Ethical Responsibilities to Community and Society

I make a commitment to promote cooperation among professionals and agencies and
interdisciplinary collaboration among professions concerned with addressing issues in the health,

education, and well-being of young children, their families, and their early childhood educators,
as stated in the article. For example, when Im a preschool teacher I want to make sure that I
always communicate with everyone that can help me better the well-being of young children,
because thats the most important thing that I want to accomplish in my job, to always help
children succeed in school and in life. I make a commitment to work through education,
research, and advocacy toward a society in which all young children have access to high-quality
early care and education programs, as stated in the article. For example, when I was an intern I
always made sure to help the environment be a positive, learning, and caring environment
for children to learn and grow in.

Individual
I make a commitment to communicate openly and truthfully about the nature and
extent of services that we provide, as stated in the article. For example, when Im a
preschool teacher I want to make sure that I always communicate with someone that has a
question about the program that I work at, that I have the answers to their questions so
then they can get the support they need; such as, families who need to know more about
the services we provide. I make a commitment to be objective and accurate in reporting
the knowledge upon which we base our program practices, as stated in the article. For
example, when Im a preschool teacher I want to make sure that I always am objective
and accurate, because I do not want to say something that I am not sure about. I want to
be truthful, and make sure that everything I say is true, so then I can be trustworthy.

Collective
I make a commitment to make sure that the policies that do not benefit children
will be changed practices, as stated in the article. For example, when Im a preschool
teacher I want to make sure that I always use policies that will have a purpose to help
benefit children in school so then they can be successful. I make a commitment to
promote knowledge and understanding of young children and their needs. To work
toward greater societal acknowledgement of childrens rights and greater social
acceptance of responsibility for the well-being of all children, as stated in the article. For
example, when Im a preschool teacher I want to make sure that I always help children to
become successful in school, and I will take the time to get to know every child that I
have in my classroom.
