Ladies and gentleman,
members of the press, and
the millions of Americans
watching on television,
the scientists and
archaeologists who have
worked so hard on this
project for many years
are here today to tell
youWeve done it! We
have discovered the
Parthenon!

THE

The Parthenon was dedicated to Athena
It was built under Pericles, between 447

and 432 B.C.

The architects for the Parthenon were

Ictinus and Callicrates, and Phidias

supervised the culture.

The temple has eight Doric columns at

each end, and 17 on the flanks, for a total

of 46 planks. The parthenon sits on top of
a stylobate that is three steps high.

The Parthenon has a cella and an inner

chamber behind it. The inner chamber

(called the Parthenon proper), gave the
temple its name.

THE

Parthenon was important

at the time it was created

because it was built to
worship the greek
goddess Athena (Athena
was the virgin patron
goddess of Athens). It was
also built to win over the
political trust of Athens.

THE

The Parthenon became a Christian

church at about 500 B.C. When Muslims

from the Ottoman Empire conquered
Athens in the middle of the 1400s, the
Parthenon became a mosque.
In 1687, the Parthenon was damaged

when the Venetians tried to take over

Athens, the Parthenon was badly
damaged. The Ottomans were using it
for storing gunpowder, which exploded
and wrecked part of the building. The
remaining part of the building was
moved to the British Museum in
London, (the Elgin Stones), but there
are only ruins that remain.

THE

The Parthenon was made entirely

from Pentelic Marble. This white

marble, was brought from Mount
Pentelicus, which is located about
11 miles from Athens. The
rectangular temple measures 237 ft.
long, 110 ft. wide, and about 60 ft.
high. The central part of the
Parthenon (also known as the cella)
was divided into two different
rooms. One of the rooms had a
huge statue of Athena in it, which
was made from gold and ivorycovered wood. The other room was
a treasury.

THE

Originally, there were

brightly painted sculptures

that decorated one of the
two pediments (triangular
ends of the roof). The
eastern pediment had
scenes that showed the
birth of Athena. The western
pediment had scenes
showing the battle for
control of Athens between
Athena and Poseidon.

THE

There are series of small sculptured

panels called metopes on the top of the

outer walls above the columns of the
Parthenon. They displayed mythological
battles between the Lapiths and the
centaurs, the gods and a race of giants,
and the Greeks and the Amazons. The
panels also showed battles from the
Trojan War. Along the outer wall of the
cella there was a continuous decorated
band called a frieze that showed the
Athenian people, officials, priests,
maidens, and young men on horseback
during the annual procession honoring
Athenas birthday. The Parthenon is now
being gradually restored by the Greek
government.

The Parthenon is important for

many reasons. One reason that it is

important is that it was dedicated
to the Greek goddess Athena, who
was very important in Greek
culture. A second reason is that
since the Parthenon is considered
as one of the best examples of
Ancient Greek architecture, and so
it is important for us to learn about.
It gives us many examples of what
the Greeks were doing with their
architecture in Ancient Times, and
it also tells us about their culture.

THE
PA R T H E N O N
We should care about

Parthenon because it tells

us about Ancient Greek
architecture and what it was
like at its peak. We also
should care because
Ancient Greece was so
important because it effects
our culture today, and the
Parthenon was a very
important part of Greece.
