Teaching Objective (ABCDE): After reading about San Diego Zoo Birthday, students will correctly respond to a question by choosing a single
option in four out of six questions.
IEP Objective(s): Students will identify the main idea and supporting details of the weekly readings in 7/10 trials per week.

Background Information: Students have learned about living things such as plants and animals.

News 2 You Word Definitions Level 3
News 2 You Vocabulary Words & Definitions Level 1
Equipment: SmartBoard and Computer
Classroom Management/Environment: Group work- Students listen as news story is read aloud by the SmartBoard. Students free to circulate
room until called to board for their turn to answer questions. Teacher reads the question aloud, and students use their hand to select picture
answer on smart board. Some may require hand over hand prompting. Redirect off task behavior by verbal prompt.
Independent work- students stay at their work stations to complete six tasks. Some students will complete worksheets related to Zoo
Birthday as one of their tasks. Each student has a visual schedule and work system they follow. Teacher and paraprofessionals circulate and
provide individualized support for students as needed.
Engagement/Focus: Okay time for the news of the day! Today we will read about the San Diego Zoo Birthday.
Student Objective (Today you will be able to___.): By the end of this story, you will be able to answer who, what, and where questions about the San Diego Zoo.
Purpose of the Lesson (This information is important because___.): This is important because the San Diego Zoo is 100 years old and you need to
know how to pull out the important information from a story.
Explanation/Procedures (Relate to prior knowledge; describe what you will teach & model, what the students are to do with you, and what they are to do
independently (I do, We do, You do); must include higher level questions you will answer) :

You have learned about animals and habitats they live in. Today we will read about a different home for animals.

At the end of Page 1, ask What are we talking about today? (Zoo) Yes we are talking about the zoo, and why are we talking about it?
(Birthday) Yes the zoo is having a birthday to celebrate turning 100 years old.
At the end of Page 2, ask Who started the San Diego Zoo? (Dr. Harry Wegeforth) Yes, Dr. Harry Wegeforth started the San Diego Zoo.
At the end of Page 3, ask What is the job of a zookeeper? (Take care of animals) Yes, the zookeeper takes care of the animals.
At the end of Page 4-5, ask What is in the animals homes? (Trees, ponds, grass, no cages) Yes the animals have homes with trees, ponds,
grass, and never any cages.
At the end of Page 6, ask What can visitors learn about animals? (What they eat) Yes, the visitors learn about what animals eat.
At the end of Page 7, ask What animals are endangered? (Pandas, Orangutans, Tigers, Tasmanian Devils) Yes, Pandas are endangered.
At the end of Page 8, ask Would you like to visit, but cannot? (Yes) We live in Texas, so we will go to the website.
At the end of Page 9, ask What will be new at the zoo? (Shows) Yes the zoo will have new shows for people to watch.
Now that we have read about the Zoo Birthday, we will answer questions about the main idea and supporting details.
Call first student to board to answer review questions. Read questions aloud and give 3-5 seconds wait time before giving prompt (reading
aloud answers) Some students may need physical prompt of pointing to answers and possibly hand over hand.

Students transition to work stations to begin independent work related to Zoo Birthday vocabulary of the week.
During independent work time, teacher will circulate and provide individualized support if needed.
When definitions worksheet has been completed, read over with the student.
