any two objects in the universe that have mass.

Mass is the amount of matter in an object, and
weight is mass times the effect of gravity.

Students will be know gravity is an attractive force
Students will know the effect of air resistance on
the acceleration of an object based on gravity.

Academic Language

Weight: a measure of how strongly gravity acts on


an object
Mass: The amount of matter, and is based on the
number and kind of atoms
Friction: The energy transfers that occurs when to
objects come in contact with each other.
Air Resistance: Also known as Drag, friction that
occurs when an object travels through air.
Momentum = mass x velocity
Gravity: The attractive pull between all objects
that have mass.
Terminal Velocity: The maximum speed a falling
object can achieve in an environment with air
resistance.
Projectile: Anything shot or thrown through the air.
Vacuum: An environment free of all matter.
F = ma = Newtons 2nd Law, it is pointed out to the
students in this unit that when they use W = ma to
calculate weight that W = F.
V = V0 + at = As all the examples used at this
level have a starting velocity of 0, the students
are allowed to use the simplified version of v = at

calculations by students but it helps to illustrate
