&
Multiple Intelligences
Impact Variables for the A New
Vision of Education

Different Learning Styles

This presentation deals with two
connected concepts that are
major variables cause for
concern - in how we design and
implement curriculum for
effective, inclusive education.

Different Learning Styles

Learning Styles

Multiple Intelligences

Different
approaches to
ways of
learning.

Different ways to
demonstrate
intellectual
ability.

Different Learning Styles

Every individual is different and these
fundamental differences impact directly
on the classroom interactions and
interpersonal relationships that occur in
schools - commonly referred to as
teaching and learning or education.

Different Learning Styles

Each student is as
different as the
flowers or leaves on a
tree.

Different Learning Styles

Childrens ways of
knowing and
learning are as
different as the
colours of a
rainbow.

Different Learning Styles

Learning for the new
curriculum has been
designed to take into
account the basic
differences in both
teaching & learning
styles that shape each
and every classroom.

Different Learning Styles

VARIABLE ONE

VARIABLE TWO

Students
preferentially
take in and
process
information in
different ways.

Teachers use very

different
methods.

Different Learning Styles

Often mismatches
occur between
learning styles and
the teaching style

Different Learning Styles

Students not in tune with the available

learning experience through no fault of
their own
become bored and inattentive
do poorly on tests
get discouraged, and
in some cases, drop out, or
are actually pushed out of school.

Different Learning Styles

Do we know enough about the
individual learning styles to make
education more effective, relevant
and capable of achieving the
essential learning outcomes for
which it has been designed?

Different Learning Styles

The short answer to
this fundamental
question seems to be
YES we do
understand a fair bit
about how individuals
learn.

Different Learning Styles

With this information we can more
effectively design learning
opportunities in the new curriculum
to provide a more inclusive,
authentic and relevant education.

Different Learning Styles

For example, Howard Gardiner
indicates that there are at least
eight different types of intelligences
- important characteristics that
educators must consider when
designing effective, and inclusive
learning experiences.

Different Learning Styles

Bodily/Kinesthetic

Musical/Rhythmic

Intrapersonal

Naturalist

Interpersonal

Verbal/Linguistic

Logical/Mathematical

Visual/Spatial

Different Learning Styles

It is not feasible to try and explain in any
detail how these multiple intelligences
impact upon the kind of learning
experiences that needs to be design for
each classroom and school.

Different Learning Styles

A search using the phrase different

learning styles revealed 610,000 internet
sites.

Different Learning Styles

Additionally, given the time frame, it is
more useful to focus on how we can
positively interact with each and every child
to help them learn in appropriate ways.

Different Learning Styles

As we will reveal later there are different
ways of assessing your own learning style
and such diagnostic tools can help us
understand the learning needs of each
individual learner.

Different Learning Styles

BODILY/KINESTHETIC
Are athletic and active
Enjoy creative dramatics.
Learn through physical
movement
Use movement, gestures
and expressions to learn
and solve problems

Bodily Kinesthetic
These types general use their own bodies
skillfully as a means of expression or to work
skillfully to create or manipulate objects.

Examples dancers, actors, athletes,

sculptors, surgeons, mechanics and
craftspeople

Different Learning Styles

INTRAPERSONAL
Generally have an
honest accurate and
comprehensive
picture of self
Aware of inner
moods,motivations
and desires
Self-disciplined

Intrapersonal Types
These types generally have the capacity
to know themselves including knowledge
of their own strengths and weaknesses,
motivations, goals, and feelings.
Examples Entrepreneurs, therapists

Different Learning Styles

INTERPERSONAL
Sensitive to facial
expressions, gestures and
voice qualities
Ability to discriminate
among personal cues
Experts in responding
effectively to cues to
inspire others
Enjoys group work and
interactions

Interpersonal Types
These types generally have the capacity
to appropriately and effectively respond
to other people and understand their
feelings.
Examples Sales People, Social Directors,
Travel Agents

Different Learning Styles

LOGICAL/
MATHMATICAL

Enjoy number
games,problem solving,
pattern games
Have strong reasoning
skills and ask logical
questions
Like order and step-bystep directions

Logical/Mathematical Types
These individuals have the capacity to
think logically,use numbers effectively,
solve problems scientifically, and discern
relationships and patterns between
concepts and things.
Examples Mathematicians, Scientists

Different Learning Styles

MUSICAL/RHYTHMIC
Enjoy playing instruments
singing, drumming
Like the sound of the human
voice and other sounds
Learn easier if things are set
to music or a beat

Musical/Rhythmical Types
These individuals have the capacity to
appreciate a variety of musical forms in
addition to using music as a vehicle of
expression. Musically intelligent people
are sensitive to rhythm, melody, and
pitch.
Examples Singers, Composers, Musicians

Different Learning Styles

NATURALIST
Enjoys the natural world
Able to classify and
comprehend things
encountered in the
world of nature
Learns in a hands-on
environment

Naturalist Types
This additional category of individual
responds to the natural world and
appreciates naturally occurring patterns
and visual forms.
Examples Farmers, Ranchers, Hunters,
Gardeners, Animal Trainers and Handlers

Different Learning Styles

VERBAL/LINGUISTIC

meanings, sounds and
rhythms of words
Enjoy storytelling and
creative writing
Love reading, poetry,

Need to conduct a more detailed
analyze of yourself or a family
member?
There are accessible internet sites
that can help.

One good reference point comes from
North Carolina State University who
provide an Index of Learning Styles
and a self administered diagnostic
test.

A vision of the
curriculum has
emerged in which
design and technology
merge with both
learning styles and
multiple intelligences
in mind.

Different Learning Styles

This new vision of
education advocates for
an inclusive, activitybased, problem-solving
designed set of learning
experiences based on a
constructivist notion of
quality education for all.

And now you
are probably
asking what
context are the
images of food
trying to
introduce.

Different Learning Styles

It is my way of trying to draw a
conclusion by suggesting that there
may, in fact, be other intelligences,
including an oral, gastronomy or
perhaps it is simply break time or lunch
time or that we have reached the end.
