Day 1 of 1

Grade: 1

Date: April 18, 2016

Subject: Math

Time: 40-45 minutes

Cognitive Level(s) of Lesson: Application

Objective:
Students will be able to:
Learning: Measure the length of an object
Behavior: by using non-standard units of measure such as paper clips
Condition: after watching a video, participating in a Smartboard activity, engaging in a
measuring activity, and completing a worksheet.
NJCCCS Addressed:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.2
Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a
shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is
the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Limit to contexts
where the object being measured is spanned by a whole number of length units with no gaps or
overlaps.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.1
Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and
texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.1.A
Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others with care, speaking one at a
time about the topics and texts under discussion).
Instructional Strategies
Opening:
Good afternoon boys and girls! Today we are going to be learning about measuring the lengths of
different objects using paper clips. First, I will be showing you a video that teaches you how to
measure with paper clips the correct way. Next, you will be doing a measuring with paperclips
activity on the Smartboard. Then, you will be doing a measuring activity in groups. Finally, you
will be completing a worksheet that goes with the activity. Lets begin! (Anticipatory Set)
Presentation:

1. The students are asked to push out into a circle and face the Smartboard. (Classroom
Organization)
2. The teacher will ask the students to give her 5. 1. Eyes Looking 2. Ears Listening 3. Lips
Closed 4. Hands still 5. Brains Ready!
3. The teacher will ask the students what it means to measure the length of an object.
Anticipated Responses: how long or short an object is (Assessment of Background
Knowledge)
4. The teacher will tell the students that you can use smaller objects to measure the length of
longer objects.
5. The teacher will ask the students what tools you can use to measure the length of an
object. Anticipated Responses: cubes straws string crayons pencils
hands
6. The teacher will explain that they will be watching a video on how to measure the length
of objects using paperclips. The teacher will ask the students to pay attention to how the
paperclips are lined up when measuring. The teacher will explain that she will pause the
video at certain points to ask them what is wrong with the way the paperclips are placed.
7. The teacher will play the video.
8. The teacher will ask what is wrong with the first example of the paperclips. Anticipated
Responses: there are not enough paperclips The teacher will show an example on the
document camera. The teacher will measure an object and not put enough paper clips.
She will ask the class if something is wrong with the way she measured. The teacher will
call a student up to fix the paper clips. (Checking for Understanding)
9. The teacher will ask what is wrong with the second, third, and fourth examples.
Anticipated Responses: they are not lined up end to end they are not the same size
The teacher will then show two more examples on the document camera. The teacher will
measure another object and line up the paper clips the wrong way. The teacher will also
measure another object and use two different sized paper clips to measure. The teacher
will once again ask the class if anything is wrong. The teacher will call on other students
to come up and fix the paper clips. After this is done, the teacher will explain to the class
why it is important to measure the correct way.
10. The teacher will pull up the Smartboard activity.
11. The teacher will call each table to get their white boards. The teacher will provide them
with socks and markers.
12. The teacher will explain that each person at each table will be getting paper clips. The
teacher will explain that they are not to touch the paper clips unless the teacher asks them
to measure. If they do touch them without the teachers permission, they will be taken
away. The teacher will explain that they will draw each object from the activity on their
white boards and use the paper clips to measure it on their white boards.
13. The teacher will explain that she will be calling students up using popsicle sticks to come
and drag the correct number of paper clips under each object on the Smart Board.
14. If the student who is called is having difficulty, the teacher will allow the students to call
on a person to come up and help them.
15. Once the student has finished dragging the paperclips, they will tell the class the number
of paperclips and the teacher will ask the class to put thumbs up if the student is right and
thumbs down if they are wrong before putting the answer in the box.
Guided Practice:

16. The teacher will model her worksheet for the measuring activity on the document camera.
(Modeling)
17. The teacher will read the directions to the students.
18. The teacher will remind the students that the end of all the objects they are measuring
must meet the end of the paperclip. If it doesnt, then each object will not be measured
correctly and the amount of paper clips used to measure each object will not be correct.
The teacher will explain that each student at each table with be given one of the objects
on the worksheet. The teacher will explain that once they are done measuring the object
that they were given, they will rotate and pass their object on to another student. The
teacher will tell the students that they will keep doing this until they have finished
measuring all of the objects on the worksheet. (Input)
19. The teacher will pass out the worksheets to the students.
20. The teacher will tell the students to put their name and date on their worksheets.
21. The teacher will go around to check for their name and date and give points to the tables
that have both written down.
22. The teacher will explain that if the class is good, they will get a special prize from Miss
C.
23. The teacher will walk around the room and help any student that needs assistance.
Closure:
24. The teacher will call on students from the groups to share their answers with the rest of
the class.
25. The teacher will ask the students to think back to the beginning of the lesson and tell the
teacher the right way to measure using paperclips. Anticipated Responses: the end
must line up with the end of the object they have to be the same size they have to be
in a straight line The teacher emphasizes that if the ends dont line up, then the
measurement will not be correct. The rules of measuring say that in order for the
measurement to be correct, the ends of the object and the tool used to measure must line
up. There should be no spaces in between the paper clips when you measure. Always
measure in a straight line. (Summary of Major Points)
26. The teacher will tell the students that it is important to know how to measure the right
way. Measuring is an important part of life. When you grow up, you will need to make
measurements in your house in order to figure out if something will fit or if it is just too
big. (Tying Coherent Parts to a Whole)
Assessment:
Formative: The teacher will call on students what it means to measure the length of an object,
and ask them what tools you can use to measure length. It is also present in Steps 7, 8, and 24
when I am checking for their understanding during the lesson.
Individual Measurability: The teacher will observe each student by walking around the room
and monitoring their work and help those who need assistance. The knowledge they use for
completing their worksheets is also a part of this.
Summative: The teacher will collect the worksheets and record them in her record book. This
will help the teacher check for understanding.

Differentiation:
Varying Content: The lesson will be presented through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic means.
Varying Process: Measuring with paperclips will be presented through a video, group activity,
and Smartboard activity.
Varying Product: The teacher will have the lower level students use rulers and support them
with verbal rehearsal and questioning before writing down their answers. The teacher will have
higher level students measure the same objects with different sized paper clips.
Technology: Smartboard, Document Camera
