FINAL MAJOR

PROJECT
H O L LY S M I T H

CONTENT OUTLINE
A documentary on the effects of the media on young people. I will interview young people on their experiences
with feeling pressured by the media and it giving them twisted views about beauty.
My documentary will cover whether this is an issue that affects young people and how.
I plan to film an experience with the strict expectations of modelling agencies and that young people see and
project onto themselves. I aim to raise awareness of how these ideas are unrealistic but also give another side to
the story to evaluate whether the media is in the wrong or are they just putting out what the public want to see.
It will be unique because I will look at it from different angles, e.g. from the photographers view, people in the
industry, models and the public. This will give my audience an overview of the issues so they can decide who is
causing it. The aim is to expose how unrealistic the media is so that it reaches young people and they understand
that they shouldnt try to conform to these expectations. It is aimed at young people who are affected by similar
issues.
Vibe productions should publish my idea because it is an actual issue that is occurring all over the world today. I
feel by creating this document it could actually help people overcome issues of low self-esteem or challenge the
social perception of beauty.

IDEAS
After submitting a survey to my peers asking them which idea would work best as a documentary. My initial ideas
included; going to university (Bristol) and interview a student on student life, night life, and money, going out,
accommodation, studies and experiences. Another idea was to interview Jen (girl who lives with my family) on what
it is like to move from France and living with another family and going to an English college, my third idea was a
documentary about the war and interview my grandma on her experiences in the war and my final idea which was
to interview young people on pressures to fit in with the medias perception of physical appearances- interview
photographers on the unhealthy ideas they give out on how to look.
The results were quite close but 60% of my respondents said they prefer the idea of going to university and
interviewing students. When I asked my peers which idea they would find most interesting to watch, 40% said idea
1 (university) and equally 40% said they would find idea 4 most interesting (body image and the effects of the
modelling industry on young people). This made it difficult because I had to decide myself between the two with
the same votes. Once considering that idea 1 was most popular in my first question, I had to contact the people I
would use in my documentary on University life. After speaking to my sister I found that the university idea
wouldnt be too easy to film because she doesnt have enough availability in the next few weeks. Therefore I have
decided that the documentary on the medias influences on young people would work quite well because I know lots
of people who are available to be interviewed and I think I can do the idea quite well because I have contacts
within the modelling that I can speak to and film from my personal experience with it. It also helps that I already
had permission from some friends to interview them.

Mood Board

TARGET AUDIENCE

I designed a survey to define the target audience. I found that people thought my
documentary was aimed at both females and males but predominantly females.
They thought the ages that would watch it would be from 16 to 25. They also
decided the social class would be group E because they are students and likely to
be unemployed.
The ages would be 16-25 because most people who are these ages use social media
like Instagram so would be surrounded by images of people perceived as beautiful
who they might desire to look like.

I did research into similar programs to mine to see whether their productions
targeted a similar audience to establish whether my target audience was right. For
example the film Picture Me has a general audience but the age focus is roughly 1225. Picture Me focuses on the dark side of the modeling industry that young girls
need to understand such as issues like anorexia and bulimia that is a problem
young girls face.

MARKET COMPETITORS
Picture Me was produced as a film and released in cinemas and on Netflix
which is something I didnt consider for my documentary because I
produced it as TV series so mine would be shown on Channel 4. It follows a
models life in the industry and the strict expectations and exploitation she
had to face, showing how it isnt only bad for the public but also for the
models themselves.
Body Image is a competitor to my documentary because it is also a
documentary on a very similar topic. This documentary looks into the
different shapes and sizes of bodies and people's attitudes to them.
My production will be unique because unlike Body Image mine will talk to
professionals about their opinion and speak to more than just one person
about their experience so is a more realistic view of the issue. It will be
different to others because I will shoot it from the students perspective to
show a reality of whether the influence of media is good or bad overall.
