English Language Arts- Understanding Text
8 girls, 9 boys, 1 advanced learner.

Common Core State Standards

ELA K.1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
ELA K.3 With prompting and support, identify characters, settings and major events in a story.
ISTE 3 Research and information fluency.
Objectives
The students will be able to
Take part in discussion about the text as it is read aloud
Understand text and identify characters and major events in the text
Answer questions about the text as it is being read aloud
Take turns using a pointing stick to point to an answer of a question about the text on the
smart board.
Rationale
It is crucial for children to be read to even before they enter school. When a child enters the
school system, it is important for a teacher to read to them, even if the child does not know how
to read themselves. It is helpful for students to be asked questions about the text as they are
listening to ensure that they are registering what is being read to them. As a teacher, it is important to point to each word being read at that moment so that the student can be introduced to
new words and start to understand the sounds of the words. Introducing technology in the classroom is also important for students. In this lesson, the students will be provided with a basic introduction of the smart board during the reading of the text and will take turns answering questions about the text by circling the character they think will correctly answer the question.
Multiple Assessment Strategies
The students will be answering questions during the lesson and will be given a formative quiz
assessment after the lesson.
Materials needed
Smart board, Smart board pointing stick, electronic version of book.
Technology
Students will be provided with a basic introduction of the smart board during the reading of the
text and will take turns answering questions about the text by circling the character they think
will correctly answer the question. Every student will get a turn at the smart board.
Instructional Procedures
Students will sit all together on the reading mat facing the smart board.
The teacher will begin with explaining what an author and illustrator is.
The teacher will then proceed to read the text, pointing to each word being read.

At the end of the first page, a student will be chosen to come up to the smart board and be
asked to circle how the pigs escaped from their owners. (The Truck)
At the end of the second page, as a prompt for discussion, the students will be asked how
they would attempt to find their pigs if they were the farmers.
At the end of the seventh page, a student will be chosen to come up to the smart board and
circle how Bert and Ethel will be getting to florida. (The bus)
At the end of the eighth page, the advanced learner will be chosen to come up to the smart
board and circle something in that page that shows Bert was wrong in saying there were no
pigs in Florida. (Challenging question for the advanced learner)
When page eleven is finished, the teacher will ask the whole class if THEY see any pigs on
the page.
When the twelfth page is finished, the teacher will ask the whole class why the desk clerk
tossed the keys to Bert and Ethel so fast. (Because the clerk is a pig and didnt want Bert and
Ethel to catch her)
At the end of page 13, the teacher will ask the whole class why Ethel keeps telling Bert to forget about the pigs. (Because she wants to have fun)
At the end of pages 14 and 15, the teacher will choose three students to come up to the smart
board and ask them to circle any pigs if they can find them.
At the end of page 17, a student will be chosen to come up to the board and circle what the
clerk handed Bert and Ethel in order to find the pigs. (A map)
At the end of page 19, a student will be chosen to come up to the smart board and circle the
reason why Bert and Ethel are hiding in the trees. (Alligators)
At the end of page 21, two students student will be chosen to come up to the smart board and
circle any pigs they can find.
At the end of pages 22 and 23, three students will be chosen to come up to the smart board
and circle any pigs they can find in those pages.
At the end of page 25, the teacher will ask the students why Bert was brought to the police
station.
At the end of page 28, the teacher will ask the class what happened to Bert when he went
fishing. (He fell off the boat) The teacher will also choose a student who hasnt been chosen to
come up to the smart board and circle any pigs they can find.
At the end of page 30 and 31, three students will be chosen to come up to the smart board
and circle any pigs they can find.
Also at the end of page 31, the teacher will ask the class what Ethel realized as she read the
paper. (The person who rescued Bert was a pig)
At the end of page 33, a student will be chosen to come up to the smart board and find Bert in
the newspaper article.
To wrap the lesson up, the teacher will ask the students to go around and say what their favorite part of the book was.
Extensions
During another lesson in the same week, read another book to the class and this time ask them
about a character and have the students circle which character they think it is on the smart
board. This book should have more than two important characters so the students can start to
point out which character does what.
