Stop 1: Hawaii

Volcanoes in Hawaii can be unsafe for

residents of active volcano locations.
There are still a couple of active
volcanoes, while others have remained
dormant. What is a volcano? A volcano
is a cone shaped mountain with an
opening at the top from which it
releases gases and lava. One solution
for the people who reside next to active
volcanoes is to practice evacuation.
Families should have a safe remote
location where they can reunite with
other family members in case of
emergencies like this.

Stop 2: Ecuador

Field Trip to Hawaii,

Ecuador & Massachusetts

Begin: PCC
Ecuado
r is 109,483 square miles long and is located on
the equator of the Earth; thus the name
Ecuador. This country is located mostly in the
southern hemisphere where two tectonic plates
cause not only tsunamis but earthquakes too.
Recently there was a devastating earthquake
that took the lives of 659 people and left
thousands injured. The cause of this destructive
earthquake was due to the Nazca plate moving
under the South American plate. With all of the
built up tension and friction, the plates caused a
massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Quakes like
these are difficult to avoid especially in an

area prone to hazards like these. It is best

to have emergency bags with food, water,
and clothes ready to go at any given
moment.

Additional

Massachusetts
Boston is located on the eastern side of
the United States of America. The
climate in Boston is humid. Because
the city is near the North Atlantic
Ocean, it is prone to storms in the fall;
specifically blizzards. Blizzards are
large amounts of snowfall with strong
winds drifting snow. One of the worst
blizzards lasted four days in 2003 from
February 14-19 with 27.5 inches. This
winter cyclone was being built up with
winds coming in from the north which
led the precipitation to rise and be
created in snow form. The best way to
prepare for a situation like this one
would be to have a plan for evacuation.
For Boston residents who live in homes
and have basements; they can stock up
some food and prepare the basement
for shelter. It is pretty much the same
protocol for tornadoes, which is to stay
away from tall buildings, get out of

This is where Boston is located on the

map. You can also see the bodies of
