I. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure, Concept, or Principle):
Students will identify the topic, name the book, introduce their opinion, support their reason for the
opinion, using the text to find a purpose.
II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective):
Students will voice and write their opinion of the story, while summarizing the book, Measuring
Penny.
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence):
In the previous lesson, students made relations to the story and what possible outcomes could be for
the main character of the story.
IV. INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activities):
Today we will read a fun book that you will all love, Measuring Penny, by Loreen Leedy. The main
character Lisa, is assigned a project, and that is to measure anything she wants. However, she has to
measure it in as many ways as she can. What would you measure if you were given this assignment?
Lisa decides to use her dog for the assignment. What ways can she measure her dog? Do you
think that her decision is creative? Lets find out the many ways she measures her dog, Penny!
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology with Student Activities):
C. Step #1 Name the important characters
a. In pairs, find the names of the main characters in the story, explain what is happening in the
story.
b. Teacher listens to each pairs answer and reviews what we found together as a class.
Step #2 Find the details of the story
a. What kind of dog is Penny? What other dogs did Lisa examine?
b. Teacher listens to the students responses
Step #3 Charting responses
a. In Pairs, talk about ways Lisa measured Penny
b. Teacher charts responses, while giving a point to the group (winner gets to choose the next
book for the next lesson)
