Product Abstract
Each student in the Mentor Program must carry out an authentic, advanced research project or creative
production, presenting to a professional audience who is capable of evaluating its quality, authenticity and
novelty. The following information, written by the student, provides an overview of the proposed project as
planned.

Research Title: Eda Sterchi: Embodying the New Woman


Purpose: Research the importance of the modernist movements in art and for women during the early 20 th
century. Analyze the influences and characteristics of the painting A Woman in an Interior by Eda Sterchi.
Compare Sterchis portrayal of the modern woman with a Gibson Girl portrait and Woman with a Mirror by
Edouard Vuillard. Learn to elevate research with primary sources and interviews.
Expected Product or Outcome: The research will be synthesized into a detailed brochure and panels for an
exhibition of the painting at the Evergreen Museum and Library in the spring of 2016. The painting will be
presented alongside artworks that show examples of the Gibson Girl and the New Woman.
Novelty of Product: Recently donated to the museum, A Woman in an Interior by Eda Sterchi will be researched
and exhibited at the Evergreen Museum and Library for the first time. Eda Sterchi is an obscure female artist,
and this exhibition will raise awareness and interest in her work.
Audience: This exhibition will be open to the public and museum visitors, targeting ordinary people interested
in modern art and female artists. Also, the research paper will remain a part of Evergreens archive for future
reference.
Process or Method:
1. Contact museums and galleries for primary sources about Eda Sterchi, including her artistic career and
personal life.
2. Research the context of modernism in art and for women during the early 20 th century, including the
emergence and popularity of the Gibson Girl and the New Woman in art.
3. Analyze A Woman in an Interior by Eda Sterchi, a Gibson Girl-style portrait of Mrs. Garrett, Woman
with a Mirror by Edouard Vuillard in its relevance to its portrayal of modern women.
4. Compile research into a paper that provides analysis of the modern woman, specifically Eda Sterchi and
her painting A Woman in an Interior.
5. Create a detailed brochure and panels that are visually appealing and written to be accessible to the
general public.
6. Curate artworks and written panels at the Evergreen Museum and Library for an exclusive opening night
and for continued exhibition at the museum.
