s I write my column for this

issue, an oilfield services company based in Calgary, Alberta,
announced that it had just cut another 500
jobs because of the oil price downturn.
The company, Calfrac Well Services,
says it now has 2,300 fewer workers in

North America than it did at the start of

2015. Its not the first time weve heard this
story and it probably wont be the last until
the prices rebound.

jobs have been lost since the
downturn took hold.
While to those working
in the oilfields and operating services companies it
may feel like this downturn
will never end, the truth is
that it will sooner or later.
You have to be ready for it,
though. Dont look back and
wonder what you could have

and determine whats next

So what is next? The options are endless: expand,
stay the same size, offer more
services, cut back on services. Either way, you have to sit

want to do. The worst thing
you could do is not develop
a plan. That is where many

what your goals and objectives are, your
financing needs and even marketing.
DR Hydrovac in Strathmore, Alberta,

One way to get a leg up on competition when the industry bounces back is
to keep your eye on new and improved
technology. Youll be able to do that at the
Global Petroleum Show next month in Calgary, where 1,500 exhibitors are expected
to show off the newest of technology in the
oil and gas industry.
In this issue, we give you a look at
what to expect at the show. Itll be my third
time at the show, and each time it just impresses me even more seeing what is
available to contractors and how it can improve performance in the field.
I invite you to reach out to me if you

company and went to work in the Alberta oilfields, with no experience other
than as a truck driver, lured by the promise of better pay. In 1999, after driving
a vacuum truck for three years, his employer offered him a half ownership of
a vacuum truck that Ruckman would operate as a lease operator, a common
arrangement in the trucking industry.
They supply the work and you do it and give the owner a percentage
of what you make, he explains. When a fellow works hard and puts in
time for a guy, at some point he (the employer) cant offer more pay and
perks, so youve got to offer him a piece of the action or hell go to work for
someone else. But in 2001, as business slowed, Ruckman struck off on his
own, bolstered by the experience and reputation hed built.

To avoid competing with his prior employer in the oilfield services

sector, working on service rigs, Ruckman decided to focus instead on
servicing drilling rigs. From there, he slowly diversified into other related
services as market opportunities arose, such as delivering water and hauling
contaminated soil. The diversification was helpful in softening the industrys
cyclical ups and downs, he notes. When one thing slows down, hopefully
other things keep you busy, he says.
But around 2003, Ruckman again bucked conventional wisdom and
decided that it was time to focus on one service instead of trying to be more
diversified. The core reason? I felt we could offer our customers a better
product, he explains. I was worried that by offering many services, wed
end up being good at a bunch of things, rather then being great at one thing.
It also boils down to the fact that all the industries are different, he

and Corey Swift use one of the
companys Tornado F4 Slope

lines on a job site in Calgary. While

pipeline companies, they have also

explains. From a management standpoint, it made more sense (to retrench)

because its tougher to manage three different types of work, all with different
employees. Plus the drilling industry requires you to live on the rigs for three
to five weeks at a time, and its harder to find employees that are willing to
live that way. With hydroexcavating, our employees can come home at night
and be with their families.
So Ruckman decided to focus exclusively on providing hydroexcavating
services for oil companies installing new infrastructure, primarily pipelines
that tied together wells and storage facilities. Most of the work involves
exposing existing infrastructure, he says, to pave the way for tying in new
pipelines. By 2006, business was good enough to justify investing in a second
hydroexcavation truck. Today, the company owns four Tornado F4 Slope
trucks, made by Petrofield Industries (a division of Empire Iron Works).
Were not a rags-to-riches story by any means, Ruckman points out.
Weve grown steadily. We never really grew crazy fast. Im a big believer that
slow and steady wins the race dont try to do too much. That way you can
maintain reasonable cash flow and not put yourself too much in debt. And
when you grow too fast, your level of service may not be where it should be
because you have too much happening at once.
CUSTOMER SERVICE COUNTS
Providing service that goes above and beyond customer expectations
has been key to the companys growth. The business has earned a good
reputation for solving problems; in fact, Ruckman says many customers call
the company Doctor Hydrovac (a play on the initials in the company name).
But we believe DR stands for done right, he says.
A can-do attitude that embraces problem-solving also keeps the phone
ringing, he notes. Were always willing to adapt and were not afraid to try
new things, Ruckman says, noting that the company recently completed a
job that required tunneling under a utility vault for 30 feet. We dont want
to be that guy where the minute a job sounds a little out of the norm, he
says, Sorry were busy, he notes. We take those jobs head-on. If youre not
learning something new every day, youre really not moving ahead. Sometimes

When Dwaine Ruckman, the owner of DR Hydrovac in

Strathmore, Alberta, got into the hydroexcavating business in
2003, he wanted a truck that would be as safe as it was durable and
productive. He found just what he was looking for in the Tornado
F4 Slope, built by Petrofield Industries (a division of Empire
Iron Works).
The truck includes an unconventional debris tank design; it
sits at a slight angle atop part of the water tank, which creates
a floor that slopes toward the trucks rear. This enables efficient
debris dumping with a hydraulic sweep. Moreover, overhead
obstructions dont come into play because an operator doesnt
raise the tank to empty it, Ruckman says. Theres less hydraulics
on board and no subframe for a hoist, so the truck is lighter, too,
he points out.
DR Hydrovac owns four Tornados built on chassis made by
Peterbilt Motors (model years 2013 through 2015). Each truck
features a 5,400 cfm blower, made by either Roots Systems
(Howden Roots) or Hibon; a triplex water pump (25 gpm/3,000
psi) made by Cat Pumps; a 10-yard debris tank; a 2,000-gallon
water tank; a 26-foot-long extendable boom with a 342-degree
coverage radius; a 740,000 Btu boiler (to heat water used to
excavate frozen soil); a Fuller transmission; and a 23-foot-deep
digging capacity.
The large debris and water tanks increase productivity by
minimizing trips for water refills and dumping debris. Moreover,
the four trucks also include three drive axles in the rear, rather
than two, which allows the units to legally carry more weight
without violating highway weight regulations. They also give
us more traction on soft ground and less compaction, Ruckman
adds. In our line of work, you can end up working on some pretty
soft ground. We sometimes work on pipelines that cross private
farmland right-of-ways, so theyre looking for less disturbance.
Ruckman says he specs blowers that will generate enough
power to get jobs done; anything more is just overkill. Bigger
blowers equal more weight and engines have to work harder to
operate them, so you use more fuel, he explains. At the end
of the day, is that better? You cant charge customers any more
money just because you have a bigger blower (than whats
generally needed), so wed rather spend less on fuel. However, if
I come across something that requires a bigger blower, were not
afraid to mount one on. If I see a market for something, well build
it and make it go.
The company aims to sell its hydrovac trucks after four to
five years, while they still hold good resale value. Because the
company sometimes sells used trucks to companies in the United
States, the value of the American dollar versus the Canadian dollar
can factor into the timing, too. Sometimes we sell a truck just
because it helps us buy the next one, Ruckman notes.
But no matter when the company decides to sell a truck, it
always gets top dollar. Why? A comprehensive maintenance
program. When were not running the trucks, were checking
them over front to back to make sure theyre running right,
Ruckman says.

NO SLACKING ALLOWED
Shale shaker machines help California contractor stay
ahead of the game in fast-paced oilfield industry
By Ken Wysocky

he stakes are high every time contractor Matt Reyes brings his solids
control machinery to a drilling pad. The bottom line: Keep up the pace
or get out of the way for another contractor who can. The solution? Fourpanel shale shakers made by GN Solids America.
If they start pumping at 800 gpm and you have liquids (drilling mud)
coming over instead of just solids, youre going to have issues, says Reyes,
a manager at CGE Services and Solutions in Bakersfield, California. Those
drilling fluids cost money, and our customers want to retain and reuse as much
of them as possible.
Plus you have to remember that these customers also have big pumps
that they use to get fluids from the mud pit into the hole, he adds. So if our
machines dont remove the cuttings, they go through the customers pumps
and eat up their pump liners. Its like a piece of metal getting into a car engine
cylinder imagine what that does to a piston. And if a pump goes down, it
might take eight hours to fix it.
CGE provides solids control and dewatering services for a variety of
industries, including oilfield drilling companies. Reyes says the company
bought its first GN Solids shale shaker more than one year ago. At the time,
the main allure was the competitive price. But Reyes quickly discovered the
machine also lived up to its performance specifications, which explains why
CGE now owns 10 GN units or nearly half its fleet of shale shakers, he notes.
HOW IT WORKS
In a nutshell, shale shakers as their name implies use a vibrating

screen to sift out, or shake, drilling cuttings so fluids can be reused. The
screen is about 4 feet long by 2 feet wide. The size of the screens mesh holes
can vary from fairly large (20 holes per square inch) to very fine (400 per square
inch), depending on drilling conditions. Sometimes they use drilling programs
from other wells drilled nearby to tell what size mesh to use, Reyes explains.
We adjust the mesh size as needed, depending on how much sand, clay and
other materials they expect to drill through.
Heres how the shale shaker works: Fluids coming back out of a wellhead
are diverted by a pincher nipple into a pipe that carries them over to the shale
shaker, which is transported by flatbed truck and typically set by a crane over
a mud pit (the unit weighs about 3,500 pounds). If the flow in terms of gpm
exceeds what one shaker can handle, more than one shaker is used. We

usually need two shale shakers and one mud cleaner, Reyes says.
The drilling fluids enter the shaker through a weir feed on the front of the
machine, then pass over the screen, which is vibrated by two electric motors
made by Martin Engineering that run on opposite polarities. If both motors
run with the same polarity, the solids will not convey across the screen to the
end of the shaker, Reyes explains.
The fluids pass through the mesh screen and fall into the mud pit. At
the same time, the mesh screen sifts cuttings from the fluids; the cuttings
eventually travel to the end of the screen where they drop into a sump or a
cuttings bin. Later, the cuttings are
collected for appropriate disposal.

Reyes also praises the machine for its reliability, no small thing in an
industry where downtime costs drilling companies significant amounts of
money per hour and can ruin an oilfield services contractors chances for
repeat business. They wont call again if your equipment breaks down, he
says. You can have a great name, a great work ethic and perfect safety record,
but if your equipment breaks down, theyre not going to use you any more. In
this business, your reputation is only as good as your equipment.
Ive run these units for 24 hours a day for three months straight, he
continues. You might shut them off every now and then for a day or so, but
then youre back up and running again. Customers want someone who can
come in and do the job so they dont have to worry about it.
Overall, Reyes says the GN Solids shakers have been a great investment.
You need to get your money back, and you know what? They do the job, Reyes
says of the units. Depending on where its used, we sometimes can run one
for six months and it pretty much pays for itself. After that, its all profit. GOMC

GREAT

EXPECTATIONS

Technology allows excavation contractors to keep employees safe by keeping them out of the equipment
By MaryBeth Matzek

JOHN SKIERKA KNOWS HIS COMPANYS CUSTOMERS WORK IN

TENUOUS, REMOTE AREAS THAT CAN TAKE AS MUCH WORK TO
REACH AS IT DOES TO GET THE JOB DONE. So Skierka and his team
at Great Excavations of Lethbridge, Alberta, developed technology allowing
workers to remotely control their equipment, easing the burden of preparing a
site and moving several pieces of equipment there.
We use existing equipment and make them work unmanned, says
Skierka, general manager for Great Excavations. By using the unmanned
equipment, we remove a lot of risks.
For example, if a traditional amphibious excavator needed to enter a
toxic environment, such as a sewage lagoon, employees would need to wear
hazmat suits and the company would need to have emergency crews and
equipment standing by. With the unmanned equipment, you dont need
that, Skierka says. It takes all human life out of the picture, reducing overall
risk. Youre keeping people on the shore and out of danger.
Sewage lagoons are just one example where the unmanned equipment
can be used. Other sites include sulfur pits, ponds or other terrain with
H2S, methane gas or other toxic elements present anything that has
the possibility to cause damage to the human body. Great Excavations
machines are used in numerous industries including gas, oil, mining and
municipal services.
20

HOW THE MACHINES WORK

The unmanned vehicles and the
operators communicate via transmitters and
receivers placed at each site. Skierka says a
remote module is turned on, which allows
the operators to connect to the machine.
The command units are equipped with a
hand-held joystick or a virtual cockpit that
drivers can use to operate the vehicle.
Another important component is a
video uplink for when the operators cant
see the vehicle in other words they can
see it and what theyre doing when theres
no clear line of sight. These remote control
capabilities allow Great Excavations to offer
unique solutions for operating amphibious
equipment that breaks down barriers for
working on difficult terrain in remote
locations, Skierka says. You can send
these machines in anywhere you would
send in a manned machine.

ice road will be located. The amphibious
equipment can be run remotely from shore,
keeping operators out of danger.

By using the unmanned equipment, we remove a lot of risks.

John Skierka

The remote-controlled excavator can reach up to 1,200 feet with zero

latency. Onboard cameras also help operators see the work being done. If
youre down 30 feet and digging up a leaky pipeline, you can easily see whats
going on, Skierka says.
Besides improving safety for all those involved, the unmanned vehicles
also have a smaller carbon footprint than traditional equipment since ice
roads or swamp mats arent needed.
One machine is doing all the work. You dont need the machine and
then all the other equipment to get that machine to where it needs to be,
Skierka says. With an ice road or swamp mat, a lot of money is spent on
logistics. You spend money to do the work and then you spend money to
get there and back. With our method, the time frame is shorter and the
environmental impact is shorter.
There is a learning curve with using unmanned technology, but Skierka
says employees have quickly adjusted.
Were gaining experience all the time, but traditional equipment has
its challenges, too. Our winters arent as long as they used to be so its getting
harder to have enough time to build an ice road and then use it, he says.
The unmanned amphibious equipment does everything a standard piece of
equipment does. It allows you to get the work done.
GOING UNMANNED
Great Excavations became involved with unmanned vehicles when
a customer asked for help cleaning out a sewage lagoon without exposing
employees to any risk. From there, Skierka says the idea for a remotecontrolled device was born.

We took a look at how the industry was working in some of these toxic
environments and how to reduce the cost of hazmat suits, supplied air, extra
staffing and so on, Skierka says. Thats when we realized it would be easier and
better to use a remote-controlled system so we could sit in the nice comfortable
chair on the side and run the
machine. The remote control
aspects of it really allow these

building in safety protocols.
John Skierka
Skierka sometimes uses a
fishing analogy in explaining
how remote-controlled vehicles are a better option than traditional equipment.
He says if someone wanted to fish in the middle of the lake, he could either
build a floating dock out to the site or take a boat out to where they want to fish.
Of course, its better to take the boat and thats what our equipment is like,
Skierka says. Youre taking a boat out to where you want to go and you dont
need the other infrastructure to get there.
Unmanned vehicle technology is in its infancy and Skierka expects usage
to increase in the future with unmanned carrier trucks and other vehicles next
on the horizon: Its an exciting industry to be involved with. GOMC

ENERGY-DRIVEN
TRANSPORT

transportation burden can make a meaningful difference in the bottom line.

Transportation and logistics management strategies

are priorities for the oil and gas industry
By Jeff Lau and Jason Higgins

ransportation and logistics optimization is important in any industry.

But in the oil and gas sector, unique
financial pressures and logistical demands
elevate this priority to a necessity.
In an industry where transporting
massive and highly specialized pieces of
extremely expensive equipment to remote
and sometimes inaccessible extraction sites
is a regular occurrence, and where an idle
operation can incur enormous expenses for
every hour it is not up and running, supply
chain optimization and logistics efficiencies
can literally make a million-dollar difference.
For oil and gas decision-makers,
understanding the critical elements of a
sound supply chain management strategy
including considerations for transporting heavy equipment in a timely manner,
tracking and analyzing logistics data to
make critical deadlines, and appreciating
the value of a trusted logistics provider and
a robust transportation management platform is enormously important.
Those who understand the contours of
the logistics landscape in their industry will
be better able to translate those insights
into real-world takeaways they can apply to
their own operations, and ultimately ensure
a smoother transportation management experience. In other words, not only does a
keen understanding reflect on margins, but
it also provides the opportunity to build
leaner project models to ensure competitive
bidding and secure more business on the
front end.
EFFICIENCIES
In an industry where some operators
are seeing revenue down 60 percent or
more since last year, there is a renewed

OPPORTUNITIES
Opportunities for greater efficiency
begin at home. In a project-based industry,
increased communication between project
groups can be the first step to realizing considerable savings.
Successful logistics providers are
able to establish previously nonexistent
intercompany dialogue. Increasing the
flow of information between intercompany
groups allows capacity and monies to be
used more efficiently. Additionally, some
logistics partners can help oil and gas
companies conduct manufacturing and

gas companies have to be both smarter and
more efficient, and one of the best ways to
do so is to identify opportunities to operate
in a more cost-effective manner.
The best third-party logistics experts
provide the kind of guidance and insights
that can help oil and gas operators do just
that. Access to powerful transportation
management systems, capable of full integration with client enterprise resource
planning (ERP), provides detailed information about routing, schedules, load requirements and more. This helps anticipate transport needs and facilitate strategic
transportation planning weeks ahead of
time. Those systems can then engage in
dynamic routing and delivery possibilities,
determining the most efficient routes and
schedules, optimizing loads and potentially consolidating shipments for added
efficiencies.
That level of sophisticated planning
and integration helps to minimize the costs
and inefficiencies associated with empty
trips, bobtails (trucks running without a
trailer) and dead heads (relocating a piece
of equipment without any freight on it). For
oil and gas companies that may be working on tight margins, trimming down the

of equipment and the flow of material.
The best logistics providers manufacturing and automotive best practices
to this historically project-based industry, purchasing heavy equipment instead
of renting (if the ROI makes sense), and
helping oil and gas companies make more
informed strategic decisions about storage
and transportation limiting the wasteful
and costly practice of relying on a carrier
to temporarily store freight and equipment
when space is limited.
CAPABILITIES
Oil and gas decision-makers looking
to identify a transportation logistics expert
with demonstrated oil and gas experience
should pay close attention to credentials
and proven experience, such as:
Insurance
Make sure that your service carriers
have proper insurance. The value of oil and
gas equipment is often underestimated
or underappreciated and can easily run
into the millions. That level of insurance
really thins the herd in terms of qualified
carriers.

Track and trace

Because oil and gas transport often means delivering not to a street address
but more off the beaten path, the delivery timing and freight monitoring can be
tricky. Consequently, using the right track and trace technology is essential.
Make sure your logistics partner has a system that uses geo-coordinates
instead of a more dated GPS map overlay.
Logistics
On the service side of the equation, the best providers will commit to
delivering a swing engine or other large piece of equipment to any drill site
in the world within 24 hours a formidable challenge that may involve
details like permitting, escorts, road closures and additional complications
and considerations due to extreme size or weight. The unique challenges
associated with international transport, from documentation to inspections
and delays, make it essential that your partner has experience in this arena.
Make certain your provider has the infrastructure rigging, cranes and
other specialized equipment to securely and cost-effectively move large
and ungainly equipment, and the personnel qualified drivers who are
highly skilled specialists with additional safety training. GOMC

KEEPING WORKERS IN STATE

Bakken U looks to retain oil workers in region
with new educational opportunities
By MaryBeth Matzek

arren Logan is getting the opportunity to finish his college

degree thanks to a new university program in North Dakota designed to
keep current and former oilfield workers in
the state.
Logan attends Bakken U, a new
collaborative program that brings together
five postsecondary institutions in western
North Dakota. Hes working toward his
bachelors degree in business administration
at Dickinson University while still working
in the oil industry.

Bakken U is great for those

oilfield workers looking to
move up the ladder and need
a degree to do that or for
those looking to start over
in a new career.
Warren Logan

This degree will bring me more financial stability, the 28-year-old Wyoming native says. I started college, but left and then
started working in construction and now in
the oil industry. As Ive gotten older, I realized the importance of having a degree and
it will serve me well whether I stay in the oil
industry or something happens and I end
up in another field.
STAYING IN THE STATE
Bakken Us goal is to help current and
former oilfield workers and their spouses
receive training and education to help fill the

many open jobs in the state, says Bakken

U Director Jerry Rostad. Even though the
oil industry is feeling the pain from falling
prices, North Dakota continues to have the
lowest unemployment level in the nation,
he says.
Workers are still in demand. There
are nearly 35,000 jobs across North Dakota
waiting to be filled, Rostad says. Employers are looking for well-trained, educated
workers, and our university system is working to help fill that gap.
North Dakota University System
Chancellor Mark Hagerott came up with
the idea for Bakken U after holding listening tours around the state. The programs
name pays tribute to the regions shale formation and the oil within.
One theme that kept coming up was
that we needed to find a way to keep some
of the talent who moved here for the oil
boom, Rostad says. People came here for
one opportunity and while that industry is
still here and providing jobs, there are many
other opportunities available and it would
be great to retain those people.
He adds that many oilfield workers, including Logan, moved to North Dakota and
enjoy living in the state.
They want to stay. We need to just
give them a reason and having a job is one,
Rostad says. Its a win for the workers and
a win for the state since these workers help
power our economy.
WORKING TOGETHER
Bakken U is a collaboration of five
universities in the region Bismarck
State College, Dakota College at Bottineu,
Dickinson State University, Minot State
University and Williston State College.

Rostad says that one of those five campuses

is within an hour of most oilfield sites and
offers a mix of bachelors and associate
degrees and certificates.
By having the schools come together
in this program, weve become a one-stop
shop for workers looking to start, continue
or finish their education, he says.
Bakken U also offers online programs
from other state colleges.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
Logan was looking at different options to earn his degree when he came
upon the Bakken U website. From there,
he found a story in the Dickinson, North
Dakota, newspaper about it and learned of
a $5,000 scholarship funded by the North
Dakota Petroleum Council to help a current
or former oilfield worker pay tuition for the
spring semester.
On a whim, I applied and won. I was
so humbled to be the first winner. Its great
the council partnered with the school on
this, he says. We really enjoy living in
Dickinson and want to keep our home here,
which is why getting a degree is so important. It will provide other opportunities if I
experience an unexpected job loss.
Rostad says Logan fit the demographic
that Bakken U is trying to reach people
that moved from elsewhere for a job in the
oil industry and now that theyre living in
North Dakota, theyre looking for ways to
stay. Education and the jobs that follow
are a great reason to stay, he says.
While there are still jobs in the oil industry, Logan says other sectors looking for
educated workers include health care, energy-related programs, welding, construction
and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).
Bakken U is great for those oilfield
workers looking to move up the ladder and
need a degree to do that or for those looking
to start over in a new career, he says.
Rostad says Bakken U plans to offer
additional scholarships in the future. GOMC

BRINGING COMMUNITIES
TOGETHER
Group in Permian Basins Cline Shale brings together companies and
communities to make the area better for work and living
By Greg Bates

t the height of the Cline Shale

boom in 2012, it was chaotic in
West Texas.
Those involved in the oil and natural
gas areas were mostly working on their
own as separate entities. When Cline Shale
Alliance was formed that year, its goal was
to bring everyone together.
Wed seen all the difficulties in the
Bakken and western Canada and Eagle
Ford, and all those questions and challenges all those communities had, says
Cline Shale Alliance Executive Director
Greg Wortham, who is also the executive
director of Texas Wind Energy Clearinghouse. When we started Wind 15 years
ago, we saw all the challenges communities had, and the thing they werent used to
was working together.

We work for everybody.

It doesnt matter if

Greg Wortham
Until that point, regional companies
didnt share resources. With Wind, we
were all going to win. Lets figure this out
and lets all grow together. Lets share the
opportunities and lets share the lessons,
Wortham says. From that, the Cline Shale

because weve seen the difficulties.

Thats a lot of what we do, an intermediary between communities and industry,
Wortham says. Everything from community preparations, zoning, strategies and
where does someone want to put their oil

Cline Shale Alliance also organizes and
coordinates periodic leadership luncheons
and intensive substantive workshops

Ken Becker, executive director of
Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic

start the alliance. He knows firsthand the
impact the organization has had in the

We know that as Sweetwater, Texas,

the geography, in this case the oil.
The number of members can fluctuate
depending on the price of oil. Right now,
membership numbers are stagnant.
When the price of oil is $100,
there are a lot more people who need
information and need to move quickly,
Wortham says. If the price is low, fewer
companies are expanding and companies
have a much calmer time. When all the oil

reservoirs are up in price then theres that

much more intensity. Every minute theyre
not producing the oil is a lot more money
being wasted, so they need as many people
answering questions as possible. Thats
one thing that we do.

Im not selling my community.

Im making relationships with
people that if it works for them
and it works for us, then its a
good partnership.
Ken Becker
NETWORKING
OPPORTUNITIES
Wortham believes the most beneficial
aspect of being a member of Cline Shale Alliance is the networking. With so many different groups and organizations involved in
the alliance including city managers,
economic development representatives,
chamber of commerce officials, consulting
firms, contractors, suppliers, to name a few
there are so many different views.
If somebody wants to get more involved, and lets say theyre not even from
the region, they have value of being members so they can network, Wortham says.
They can be introduced to elected officials
or hotel developers or landowners or whoever they need.
Becker especially likes the fact that
hes able to build relationships through the
organization.
Im a big relationship person to begin with, Becker says. Im not selling my
community. Im making relationships with
people that if it works for them and it works
for us, then its a good partnership. If not,
its probably a good thing that we dont
come together. I think the opportunity to
meet folks in the industry and then kind of
build from there is beneficial.
During the explosion of opportunities
in the Cline Shale in 2012, Cline Shale Alliance was doing all it could to keep everyone in the region informed. Offering seminars, leadership meetings and luncheons

became a common occurrence.

These days, with the price of oil down, the Cline Shale is less active. The
organization still offers 10 major conferences per year that will key on hot
topics, as well as luncheons.
Its great information and they also bring in speakers for their different
luncheons and different events, Becker says. To be able to bring in a speaker
that talks about a particular subject that wouldnt come to every town just
makes it that much easier to get people there.
Becker has had the privilege of speaking at alliance luncheons in the
past. Hes been able to share the experiences good or bad hes had in
Sweetwater in the hopes of helping other communities.
I think thats one of the things weve enjoyed out in West Texas is that
were not all fighting just for ourselves, but were fighting to make a better
West Texas, Becker says. If we can help another community learn from a
mistake that we made, all the better.
THE NEXT WAVE
As everyone in the Cline Shale region waits for the next wave to hit, theres
plenty to accomplish. During the hot time in 2012, the area couldnt keep up
with demand, whether it was building more hotels or infrastructure needs.
We want to use this slower time to think it through and figure out
what everybodys plan is, Wortham says. Especially the communities, if
they need to upgrade the hospitals, hotels and restaurants, whatever it is and
move forward on those things. GOMC

WATER & WASTEWATER EQUIPMENT, TREATMENT & TRANSPORT SHOW
FEB. 22-25, 2017 | Indiana Convention Center, Indianapolis, Indiana

ABSORBING WAYWARD WASTEWATER

Wood pellets from Bald Eagle Pellet Co. are designed to absorb double their weight in wastewater
By Craig Mandli

pill absorption products come in many different materials.

Cellulose, beeswax, cotton, synthetics and crushed fossilized
shells are just a few of the hundreds of materials proven to
effectively absorb potentially hazardous liquids. Another one of
these materials was on display at the 2016 Water & Wastewater
Equipment, Treatment & Transport Show in the form of Premium
Wood Pellets from Bald Eagle Pellet Co.
The pellets are 6 percent moisture content, and can absorb up
to two times their weight in water. That means that a ton of wood
pellets will absorb as much as 2 tons of liquid, or more than 482
gallons. According to company owner Aaron Reese, the pellets can
be used in many applications across the wastewater and mining and
gas industries.
These pellets will absorb untreated wastewater, slurries, frac
water, hydroexcavation waste and chemicals, essentially turning it
into a solid, he says. They are made of 100 percent natural sawdust,
so they are completely biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
With hauling and disposal costs continuing to increase, especially for liquid waste, the pellets can be an effective cost-saving tool.
Not only will their high absorption properties mean less freight and
material for absorbent solidification is needed at the well site, less
freight and material will be sent to the landfill from the well site.
That cost savings is calculated by how much it costs to dispose of the
liquid compared to a solid, says Reese. Youd be surprised by the large difference in price in some areas.
The pellets can also be used for stabilization of hazardous and contaminated demolition material and site reclamation. They are compressed to half size
in a high-density pellet, so that 1 ton of pellets fits into an easy-to-move super
sack bag that comes on a standard 42- by 48-inch pallet. The pellets are made
from virgin-use wood fiber, not refuse, waste material, or reclaimed house or
pellet debris, guaranteeing they will be accepted at any landfill. Reese says the
pellets are ideal for water-based spill cleanup in the oil and gas industry, but
the downturn in oil production in North America has caused him to study
other potential applications for the pellets. He was able to speak with several
WWETT Show attendees who provided answers he hadnt even thought of.
I spoke with a landfill operator from the Bahamas who sees these pellets
as a potential solution to their leaching issues, says Reese. I talked with others
that said the pellets would be a fit for absorbing liquids laced with phosphorus
and nitrogen before it hits lakes and rivers. Theres also obvious uses in hauling
wastewater from grease traps and car wash traps. Theres just fewer gas rigs to
sell to right now, so we have to diversify.
Reese pointed out that the pellets are not a byproduct, as they are manufactured daily from an abundant wood fiber product provided by Pennsylvanias large timber industry. The company also produces a fine sawdust wood

flour that can be used to effectively clean oil-based spills.

They are made of genuine Pennsylvania virgin timber sawdust, he says.
There is nothing in the pellets that can harm the environment in any way.
Thats one of the cornerstones we really pride ourselves on.
Reese says his goal coming into the WWETT Show was to first introduce
himself and his product to the wastewater treatment market, and second to
gauge where his pellets could potentially fit in the industry. Hes excited to
expand on the possibilities his pellets have in wastewater.
This has been a very good show, and has given me a lot of ideas on
what markets we can target going forward, he says. There is a lot of enthusiasm from the attendees here, and they enjoy talking about what they do and
what they need to do it better. Ive loved being a part of it. 814/329-2482;

FEDERAL SAFETY PLAN

Criminal prosecution for safety violations more likely under new federal

effort to charge more safety and
environmental violations as federal
felonies. Under an agreement announced
in December, federal officials are being
encouraged to charge more safety and

than as misdemeanors.
According to a memorandum of

Besides filing criminal charges under

for worker safety violations under other

prosecuting employers who break safety

Building the Business

MISSED CONNECTIONS:
TO TWEET OR NOT TO TWEET?
Even in todays nontraditional business world, online communication
is no substitute for traditional methods of follow-up
and it could cost you new clients
By Russell Trahan

ryan walked into his office and

flipped on the lights. It had been
one month since he had submitted
his proposal to an industry-leading executive team, and today was the date of their
decision on whether or not to retain his
company. Securing this contract would be
a pivotal moment in his career and in the
future of his small business.
As the minutes turned to hours, Bryan became increasingly worried, but he
had covered his bases and kept in touch.
Just last week he engaged in some brief
social media banter with the teams CFO,
maintaining an air of informality while
ensuring that the lines of communication
remained open.

There is a distinct difference

between being attentive
and being annoying
learn it, because your
potential client is
already well aware.
His inbox dinged it was the companys CFO: Bryan, we appreciate your
proposal submission, but we have decided
to go in another direction. We require more
consistent interaction from our business
partners, and while we scheduled today
to finalize our decision, we had yet to hear
from you in the interim. We wish you the
best of luck.
The email hit him like a freight
train. Bryan had avoided a formal followup process in fear of seeming overeager
30

or pressuring his prospect, but he had

maintained casual connections through
his LinkedIn and Facebook accounts
just to keep his name top of mind. While
Bryan assumed the companys executive
team would appreciate his distance
while they were making their decision, it
actually became the nail in his corporate
coffin. They were awaiting his traditional
methods of follow-up, and his lack of
correspondence instead conveyed that he
was not the right man for the job.
PROFESSIONAL COURTESY
In an ever-expanding digital business
landscape, Bryans story is all too
familiar. Many working professionals are
exchanging established means of followup, such as phone calls and face-to-face
meetings, for quick messages over social
media or email, and it is impacting their
business relationships and bottom lines.
They sacrifice professional courtesy in an
attempt to appear casual, and regardless of
the many ways we can now communicate,
when it comes to follow-up, the best
practices are the traditional ones.
Consider the following:
Social media can be bad form
Do you have a friend or relative
who limits all contact with you to digital
convenience? That person never fails to
comment on your timeline or feed, but you
cannot recall the last time you actually
spoke.
These individuals also exist in the
business realm, and theyve attempted
to streamline their communication by
relying on their social media accounts.
Its not just a bad business practice its

bad overall form. Social media can prove

invaluable when creating connections,
but maintaining them, which is the
objective when conducting a follow-up on
a potential deal, should always be reserved
for traditional modes of correspondence.
Anything less borders on lazy and
unprofessional.
Attention or annoying?
Once youve curbed your inclination
to follow up online, there are parameters
that should be adhered to when following
up with leads. The first and most
important is to establish an agenda
when touching base with your prospects
and ensure that each subsequent call or
meeting provides new information. There
should be a concrete reason for picking up
that phone and a distinct benefit to the
individual on the other end.
Any parent can describe road-trip
trials and tribulations, including the
constant, maddening cries of Are we
there yet? from the backseat. That same
irritated feeling occurs with continuous
follow-up business calls. There is a distinct
difference between being attentive and
being annoying learn it, because your
potential client is already well aware.
Two to tango
To avoid flooding your prospects
with phone calls, give them the freedom
to lead the interactions a bit. Allow them
to dictate the follow-up flow by inquiring
about their timeline and preference for
the next call or meeting, and set a date.
Whether your next meeting is in two
weeks or two months, your prospect has
provided an appropriate date and time
for it to occur. The onus is now on you to
follow the plan and pick up the phone.
Stick to your calendar
Today there is a palpable aversion
to following up with established leads in
favor of keeping things casual. This only
leads to one thing: missed opportunities.
Let your calendar hold you accountable.
Before the end of a meeting or call, be sure
to pencil in an appropriate time to follow
up with your prospect, and stick to the

Case Studies

Fracking Equipment, Compressors,

Power Generation and Welding Equipment
By Craig Mandli

SMART POWER REDUCES OPERATING COSTS IN PERMIAN BASIN

Problem

One of the largest exploration and production companies operating in the Permian Basin had five vertical wells
with 40 hp rod pumps that ran intermittently, but strived to obtain a more cost-effective and environmentally
friendly solution by which the pumps ran only when needed, instead of by generators that run continuously.

Solution

The operator consulted with mobile, modular power provider Aggreko to develop a scalable and easily
deployable power automation solution. For each of the five wells, Aggreko provided a 16-foot trailer that held an 800-gallon fuel tank and 60 kW diesel generator
with an automated power control system. Technicians worked with the customer to link the solution to the pumps programmable logic controls, enabling the
ability to turn on/off the generator when the pump was not in operation.

Result

The power automation solution cut the operators fuel costs in half, resulting in a 40 percent reduction in cost over the course of six months. Emissions were
also reduced by more than 50 percent. 877/798-5579; www.us.aggreko.com.

EXHAUST PACKAGE HELPS GENERATE

ELECTRICITY ON REMOTE WELL SITE
Problem

A South Texas-based Eagle Ford oil and gas operator with dozens of multi-well batteries and compression stations
and thousands of miles of gas gathering lines continuously wrestled with driving down site operating costs and
reducing fugitive emissions. Getting a reliable grid connection was too expensive and generating electricity increased
man-hours on site and left a good deal of uncertainty. With unreliable electricity, they used gas pneumatics where
possible, but skipped the lighting, security systems and air compressors.

Solution

The customer deployed Alphabet Energys E1 exhaust package on a CAT 3516 natural gas engine at a gathering line compressor station. The E1 converts
exhaust heat from the compressor station into electricity and provides a reliable source of new electrical power to the remote site with no up-front CAPEX.

Result

After a successful deployment, the customer asked, What about our flare stacks? As a result, Alphabet Energy built a power generating combustor (PGC),
an integrated combustor and solid-state power generator that meets Quad-O regulations and generates electricity, turning traditional flares and combustors into
power-generating profit centers. The PGC immediately lowers site operating costs and improves site reliability. By taking exhaust heat from both engines and flare
stacks, and generating reliable electricity, the products drive down production costs and midstream electricity spending without any up-front capital expenses.

PARALLEL CONFIGURATION HELPS GENERATORS RUN MORE EFFICIENTLY

Problem

The operators of a crude oil transfer station in South Texas wanted to add efficiency to their operation of taking
advantage of on-site natural gas supply to reduce overall diesel consumption.

Solution

The operators decided to use two MMD PowerPro SDG150S Dual Fuel Hybrid Generators in parallel. They use
mix percentage beyond standard 50 percent natural gas substitution, with up to 75 percent substitution. Program
generators alternated automatically every six hours to keep engine hours balanced.

38

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - MAY 2016

Result

Upon powering up and full checkout, a single unit was pulling a varying load from 46 up to 90 kW and diesel consumption hovered between 4.2 and 4.6
gph (as confirmed by a Flowscan meter as well as the fuel flowmeter on the ComAp genset controller). Upon application of the gas supply, the system responded
properly, operating with a peak of 71.93 percent natural gas substitution, and a nominal operating value of approximately 61.25 percent substitution. During this
time, the fuel consumption dropped to 1.6 gph. Units inspected one week later were found to be handling loads while operating in HDF mode and switching
over every six hours as programmed. 800/433-1382; www.mmdequipment.com.

SUSTAINABLE MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGIES TREAT MINING EFFLUENT

Problem

Minera Aguilar, a mining company in Argentina, produces electrolytic zinc and sulfuric acid. To comply with
strict local environmental standards, the company needed to treat the wastewater prior to discharge and reuse at
least 60 percent of the wastewater. The project presented three challenges: The mine is located about 13,000 feet
above sea level, the effluent has high levels of heavy metals, and the environment is very dry with drastic temperature
differences between the daytime and evening.

Solution

RWL Water created and implemented a membrane-technology-based treatment plant that uses ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO). The plant treats
the mining effluent coming from a collection lagoon used for particulate settling. The first stage uses UF to remove the suspended solids and colloids to a level
suitable to feed the effluent to the RO system. The next stage is the use of RO to concentrate the heavy metals in the reject stream while producing high-quality
permeate for reuse or discharge to the environment.

Result

The plant is able to treat 633,600 gpd in order to produce 380,160 gpd of treated water. The 253,440 gpd of reject streams (UF backwash and RO brine) are
returned to the lagoon for reprocessing. This project has allowed the company to comply with local water standards, allowing the water to be released into local
rivers. In addition, the treated effluent can be reused. 800/879-3677; www.rwlwater.com. GOMC

MILLHOG Dictator pipe machining
tool bevels without cutting oils
By Ed Wodalski
The MILLHOG Dictator pipe beveling machine from Esco Tool
Company provides compound bevels on heavy-wall 4.5-inch O.D. to
18-inch I.D. pipe, pulling a continuous thick chip without cutting oils.
The tool mounts to the inside of the pipe using three wide clamps
with hardened steel contact points. It can simultaneously perform a 37
1/2- by 10-degree bevel or other angle. Titanium-nitride-coated blades
dissipate heat away from the pipe surface. Applications include precision
machining end preps without grinding or rework for high-integrity welds
and faster weld times.
The tool has six points of contact inside of the pipe, says Alex
Brennan, sales and marketing associate, Esco Tool. The more points of
contact you have on the I.D., the stronger its going to fit inside the pipe.
Its important to get rigid clamping to hold the tool in place because of
the weld preparation that this tool is being used for. Deep welds have a
very, very high integrity and this piece of machinery is vital for passing all
types of welding certifications and specifications.
A self-centering draw rod actuated clamping system runs through
the entire tool.
Without that youd be fighting the weight of the tool, he says.
It makes a 100-pound machine seem almost weightless. When youre
centering it in the draw rod and mandrel-pull it into the center of the

tube or pipe, it allows you to

have a consistent cut all the
way around.
The 300-pound tool,
with a working weight of about
150 pounds, develops 4,100
ft-lbs of torque at the cutter
blade. An optional offset
gearbox reduces the rpm and
multiplies the torque.
Thats important when
you have P91 or super duplex
material, Brennan says of the
gearbox. Any time you have
a rough material you want to
slow down the tool. Its similar to driving a car in the snow. If you slam
on the gas, the tires are going to spin. But if you just touch the gas, youre
going to move quicker and have more control.
The beveler is available with a 1,800-watt electric, 3 hp pneumatic or
hydraulic speed-control motor.
The motor connects to the gear head of the tool and is easily
interchangeable with just four bolts, Brennan says. The male and
female inlets are all the same, whether you go from hydraulic to electric
or pneumatic. If someone were to purchase a Dictator pneumatic tool
and realize after a few weeks that the electric version might be a better
option, they dont have to purchase an entirely new tool, just switch out
the motor.
Fully portable, the tool is available for sale or rent and comes with
horizontal and vertical lifting rings. 800/343-6926; www.escotool.com.
