    POLICY#1:STUDENTUSEOFCELLPHONESANDOTHERELECTRONICDEVICES

    ________________________________________________________________________________

    I.
    PURPOSE

    Thepurposeofthispolicyistosetforthexpectationsforappropriateuseoftechnology,
    includingbutnotlimitedtocellphonesandotherpersonalelectronicdevicescapableof
    recordingandtransmittingdataorimages.

    II.
    GENERALSTATEMENTOFPOLICY

    DistrictXholdsallstaffandstudentstohighexpectationsthatincluderespectforallindividuals
    andthelearningenvironment.Studentsandstaffwhoareusingcellularphonesandother
    electronicdeviceswithintheguidelinesthatareapartofthispolicyareexpectedtorepresent
    themselvesandDistrictXwithrespectfortheprivacyanddignityofothers.Activitiesthattake
    placeintheschoolbuildingduringtheschooldayareconsideredprivateandshallnotbe
    recordedorsharedwithouttheconsentoftheindividual.

    III.
    STANDARDSFORRESPONSIBLEUSEOFCELLPHONESANDOTHERELECTRONIC
    DEVICES

    A. Cellphonesandotherelectronicdeviceswillbeallowedinclassroomstoaidinstruction
    atthediscretionoftheteacherorotherschoolstaff.
    B. Cellphonesandotherelectronicdevicesshallremainsilentandoutofsightduring
    instructionaltime,unlessspecificallyallowedbytheteacherorotherschoolstaff.
    C. Cellphonesandotherelectronicdevicesshouldnotdisruptordetractfromthe
    educationalenvironmentorbeusedinappropriately,unethicallyorillegally.
    D. Cellphonesandotherelectronicdevicesmaynotbeturnedonorusedduringfiredrills
    orotheremergencypreparednessexercises.
    E. Cellularphonesmaynotbeturnedonorusedduringtheadministrationofanyschool
    quiz,testorexamination.

    F. Computingdevicesmaynotbeturnedonorusedduringtheadministrationofany
    schoolquiz,testorexamination,exceptasauthorizedbytheschool,orpursuanttoan
    IndividualizedEducationPlanoraSection504accommodationplan.
    G. Cellphonesandotherelectronicdevicesmaynotbeusedinlockerroomsor
    bathrooms.
    H. IftheschoolconfiscatesaCellphonesandotherelectronicdevices,the
    principal/designeewillimmediatelycontactthestudentsparentandarrangeaparent
    meeting.
    I. TheCellphonesandotherelectronicdeviceswillbemaintainedandsecuredbythe
    schooluntiltheparentappears.Iftheparentrepeatedlyfailstoappeartopickitup,the
    schoolwilldisposeoftheitemafter365days.

    IV.

    VIOLATIONSOFTHISPOLICY
    Thosestudentswhoarenotabletoadheretothestandardsforresponsibleuseofcellphones
    andotherelectronicdeviceswillbeaskedtosurrendertheirdevice*toschoolpersonneland
    besubjecttothefollowingconsequences:

    1stoffense

    Deviceisconfiscated**for1week.Studentwillserve1extended
    detention/communityserviceday.

    2ndoffense Deviceisconfiscated**for2weeks.Studentwillserve2extended
    detentions/communityservicedays.
    3rdoffense

    Deviceisconfiscated**for3weeks.Studentwillserve2extended
    detentions/communityservicedays.

    4thoffense Deviceisconfiscated**untiltheendoftheschoolyear.Studentwill
    serve4extendeddetention/communityservicedays.

    Ifthereisreasonablesuspicionthatacellphoneorotherelectronicdevicehasbeenusedin
    anactivityprohibitedbythecodeofconduct,suchasbullying,harassment,and/orcheating,its
    contentsmaybereviewedandsearched.

    **Parentsmaycometoschooltoretrieveadevicebeforetheconfiscationperiodisoverby
    callingtheDeanofStudentstomakeanappointmentbetween7:30a.m.and3:30p.m.fora
    meetinganddevicepickup.

    *Failuretosurrenderadevicetoschoolpersonnelwillresultinadditionaldisciplinaryaction.
    Theconfiscationperiodandnumberofextendeddetention/communityservicedayswillbe
    extended.Additionally,ameetinginvolvingstudents,parents/guardians,andadministratorswill

    takeplacetocreateanindividualtechnologycontracttooutlinespecificguidelinesfortheuse
    ofthedevicefortheremainderoftheschool.Situationsthatareextrememayresultin
    suspension.

    V.

    DISSEMINATIONOFPOLICY

    ThispolicyshallbeincludedintheStudent/ParentHandbook,postedonDistrictXswebsite
    andwillotherwisebedistributeduponrequest.
