Today the students will be able to:
- Know the five senses
- Find the five senses in a poem
- Define words they dont already know using sensory detail clues
I will incorporate what they previously learned about figurative language
and word structure to help them find and define unknown words.
I will read the students a poem and tell them to find a word they do not
already know. Then together as a class we will find sensory details to help
provide context for the word we dont know. Then I will reread the poem
so they can understand the word we defined better. This activity will take
30 minutes. After we define one word using sensory detail, I will ask them
to define another word from a different poem using sensory detail.
I will know that the students understand by the participation and by their
answers for the definition of the word they defined.
I will tell the students their objectives and the behavior I want from them.
I will tell them I want their eyes and ears on me while I am speaking. I will
tell them I want them to be sitting on their bottoms. I will have them in
assigned spots on the rug.
I am teaching this lesson using a poetry packet, reading to them sitting on
a chair while they sit on the carpet below me.
I will tell them their objectives, and I will continually ask questions and
make sure everyone is on track and understanding.
I will need a poetry packet. The same Packet the students have in their
desks. I will need to pre-plan a specific poem to use.
