Standards:

Students will go through a series of lessons about Digital

Citizenship. One of the lessons that students will participate
in involves Cyber Bullying. This is a problem that is growing
at an epidemic rate. Students feel more comfortable with
Cyber Bullying because they think that it is anonymous,
theyll never get caught, its just kid play, and they dont
realize the consequences of being a bully. This lesson will
force students to understand exactly what Cyber Bullying
is, the effects of Cyber Bullying, what to do if they feel they
are being bullied, and the consequences for those who
decide to bully.
Students will understand how to use technology responsibly
and develop values that allows them to be good digital
citizens.
Students will be more aware of the issues and
consequences of cyberbullying.
ISTE Standards for Teachers 4: Promote and model digital
citizenship and responsibility.

Specific Strategies
Implemented into this
lesson:

Accommodations/Modific
ations (must include all
IEP,504):

Differentiated
Instruction:

I will start the lesson by asking a focus question What is

Cyber Bullying?
I will then play a YouTube clip that I hope will make the
students think about Cyber Bullying and its effects on the
victim.
For students who have a 504 or IEP I will make sure that
they are partnered with a strong student who can help
guide their research. I will also provide the resources for
those students to use to conduct their research, so they do
not become overwhelmed with searches.
I have differentiated the lesson by meeting the learning
styles of most learners. I will play a YouTube clip for the
visual and auditory learners, class discussion will also help
the auditory learners. Hopefully the needs of the
kinesthetic learners will be met by allowing them to use

Behavioral Management
Strategies:

their creativity through a presentation. They can create

something using Internet resources and tools, they can take
photographs to portray their understanding of the topic and
later create a video with those photographs, they can
conduct interviews and use student voices in their
presentations, etc. Students have choice in how they want
to present their learning.
I will make sure that shoulder partners share the
presentation tool with the other; I will make sure that each
partner has a role in the research and presentation. I will
make sure that each partner knows their role and is held
accountable to that role. I will maintain close proximity to
all students to make sure they are on task and to facilitate
as needed.

The elements of digital citizenship are not so different from

the basic beliefs of traditional citizenship: Be kind,
respectful and responsible, and just do the right thing.
There are nine themes of Digital Citizenship: Digital Access,
Digital Commerce, Digital Communication, Digital Literacy,
Digital Etiquette, Digital Law, Digital Rights and
Responsibility, Digital Health and Wellness, and Digital
Security. (http://www.digitalcitizenship.net/) Today we are
going to focus on Cyberbullying which falls under Digital
Etiquette.
Focus Question: What is Cyberbullying?
Ask students if they have heard of the term
Cyberbullying? If so, what is it and what is
involved?
Involve students in class discussion about this topic.
Write down students
comments/examples/explanations on the whiteboard.
Refer back to this later.
Video
Show YouTube video about Cyberbullying

After video:
Discuss whether students where accurate in their
thoughts about what Cyber Bullying is and what it
involves.
Discuss with students if this has happened to anyone
in the class
Ask the students what they think they should do
if do they are being bullied through any digital
means.
Write comments on the board.
Student Activity-Teacher Instructions:
Divide the class in half.
One-half of the class will research what to do if you are
being bullied.
The other half of the class will research the consequences
for those who use methods to intimidate others
through digital means.
Student Activity- Student Instructions:
Working with a shoulder partner, research your assigned
topic: What to do if you are being bullied OR
Consequences for those who bully.
Research should come from at least five sources of
various median formats
(articles, videos, books, journals, etc)
Create a presentation:
Presentation should include:
Definition of Cyberbullying
The effects of Cyberbullying
What a person should do if they are being
bullied/What consequences should the perpetrator
have
Bibliography
Should be aesthetically pleasing to the eye (not plain)
Should include graphics and/or images
Closure:

Read and discuss our districts Acceptable Use Policy

and determine school consequences for those who
decide to Cyber Bully.
Additional questions to think about:
How can students protect themselves while online?
What should parents know about the issues of
Cyberbullying?

Enrichment,
Supplemental, Home
Learning:

Invite a detective in to discuss Cyber Bullying: how do

they investigate a Cyber Bullying accusation and
what are the consequences of someone found guilty
of Cyber Bullying.
Find statistics on cyberbullying and provide it to
parents in a school newsletter or website.
Provide resources for parents that may help them
identify symptoms of bullying and how to get help if
their child is being bullied.
Provide resources to students so they know what to
do if they are a victim of cyberbullying.
Inform all students that they are not anonymous,
there are ways to find out what sites they visit, and
make them aware of consequences for bullying.

**All of the above mentioned enrichment activities can be

student-created and student-led.
Assessment Plan
Summative/Formative
Assessment:

Evidence of Student
Learning:

Summative assessment will come through discussion

and formal observation.
Formative assessment will be their presentation of
information through a tech tool and their verbal
presentation to their peers.
1. Students understanding of cyberbullying, the effects
of cyberbullying, what to do if they or someone they
know is being cyberbullied, and the consequences for
those that make the decision to cyberbully.

was it aesthetically pleasing to the eye

I learned by researching cyber topics and creating this
lesson that our students are in desperate need of Digital
Citizenship classes. I want to create nine lessons that cover
all the aspects of digital citizenship to present to our
students the 2016-2017 school year.

Some of this lesson plans questions and ideas were used in my lesson plan. My lesson plan was
adapted to do an activity to fit my classroom/schools needs.
We are a 1-to-1 school with technology. Our students receive their technology day one of the school
year. I have been wanting to find great curriculum to use and adapt to create a sort of Digital
Citizenship boot camp. These resources have given me great ideas on nine lessons to create to help
students become aware of their technology use and become good digital citizens.
