Web of Deceit
Internet is a global networking system that allows computers, smartphones, and tablets to
connect and exchange information. The Internet began in 1973 as a project proposed by the
United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to link research
facilities at defense agencies and universities within the United States. On 1983, the internet was
released for the whole world to use. The internet has a URL called the World Wide Web
(WWW). WWW was designed by the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) in 1989
and allowed for all available published information to be searched and viewed in graphical
mode. In 1996, more than one million computers online in over 180 countries.
People say that the internet is what makes the world smaller and brings people together
easier. Internet had created these social communication tools such as skype, facetime, blackberry
messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp, line, and replacing phone lines and text message which are
costly. Internet has really amazed us and has changed the communication tools from
Nokia/Erricson to IPhone/Samsung. Does the internet really bring the world together? Does it
help with connecting people and family from faraway places? How does it affect the bond
between people? These questions make us think for the second time. Is internet really all we need
to communicate? I'm planning to research this for making people know that Internet doesn't
really bring us all together in this world.

By the time Email was made in the early 1970s, people started to use it for
communicating purposes and also transferring documents for work. Email was widely accepted
by the business community as the first broad electronic communication medium and was the first
'e-revolution' in business communication. After that time, people started to use E-mail as a way
to communicate with other in substitute for using postal services or telephone communication.
For examples, sending an email is less expensive and faster than sending postal mail. Using
email eliminates the problem of trying to get a hold of someone that is common with telephone
communication and it is also more practical than postal mail because it does not require paper
that can be lost or damaged.
To make it easier to access E-mail, people invented a cellphone that can access E-mail
easily called the smartphones. Now people can easily access E-mail on the go. E-mail then
became into a more important role as connecting people by being used for making accounts of a
social media. Social media like Facebook or twitter started become a thing nowadays because it
is one of the way bring together families, friends, and even coworkers into a one easily
accessible online chat group. From my survey, CSUN students tend to check their Facebook
more than they browse the web, making social media the most popular activity for users to do on
their smartphone.
Smartphones now are filled with many communication apps to help users communicate
with each other. Communication apps like Facebook messenger, Line, and WhatsApp are some
of the example that people use in their smartphone. My family always used Line to make a group
chat where they can talk, make video calls, or even plan a family gathering. But even all of that
advantages and benefits of using the internet to communicate with each other, internet can be a
dangerous and there's some circumstances where we need to think twice.

Firstly, different time zone, different places have their own time zones. For example like
between the US and Indonesia, they have 15'hours difference. Basically speaking, Most
Indonesian are awake at 4.00 pm in the US because by that time in Indonesia is already at 5.00
am. It also can be hard for people to work in same time but in difference places. For example my
father often has a conference call at 1.00 am in the morning because in Jakarta 4.00 pm.
Secondly, when a family has children, they need a lot physical or face to face attention.
Parents who are very busy at work tend to leave their children with a maid or babysitter. They
even have their children to communicate with them by using facetime or technological interface.
They don't spend time together very much such eating together, go to a theme park together, or
even the parents didn't show up for the children when they needed them the most. This could
affect the growth of the children's personality. So the bond between parents and children are not
very clear. The children don't feel the love they need from their parents.
Thirdly, we need electricity of power source to connect with others. Electricity bill may
be expensive. Smartphones have limited battery and they need to be charged at certain times to
be able to be used. Computers' Central Processor Unit (CPU) can also go overheat because of
being used for too long. Electricity may go higher under certain condition such as low on energy
resources, and it could lead to problem by having a very expensive electricity bill.
Finally, Freely accessing the internet without supervision from parents or guardians could
exposed themselves with non-age appropriate contents, learning how to do something bad from
the WWW, or even lead to kidnapping and even death. Based on The Risks of Internet
Communications, it said something about "People experiences with cyberbullying from the point
of view of victims and aggressors and their will to involve other people in a process of dealing
with their problems. Willingness to communicate with unknown persons who contact them

within internet services, and their experience with meeting these people in the real world.
Sharing personal data within internet services (publication of personal data freely on the internet,
sharing personal data with unknown persons on the internet) including respondents experience
with sexting." in their research.
So in conclusion, internet help us connect with people that we care and love. But,
consider that in some circumstances such as different time zone, children needed love and
attention from parents, electricity usage, and how we explore the internet. We shouldn't exploit
the benefits of using internet to communicate with each other too much. Internet can be
dangerous to our lives if we are not careful enough.
