Period 8th
Artist Inspired Paper- Andreas Lie
Andreas Lie is a 25-year-old student from Haugesund, who lives in
Bergen, Norway. Lie is most famous for merging portraits of animals with the
landscapes in which they live. He uses a technique called digital double
exposure a process that involves merging two unique photographs to create
one piece of art (Andreas Lie Artwork 1). Lie does other artwork than just doubleexposure; he does ink work, painting and watercolor. He sometimes incorporates
painting with is merging portraits to make the artwork look more realistic. Lies
images reflect a deep appreciation for nature and the wildlife. His images, for the
most part, feature a single animal, negative space that surrounds it, and filled
with images of their natural habitats. Lie never studied anything related to art and
illustration; he went to school to be an electrician. Lie started experimenting with
Photoshop and have done some graphic design work over the years which led
him into his artwork passion. Lie is very passionate about music loves to go to
concerts, and also plays a little. He loves to go on mountain hikes around where
he lives and this is where he gets most of his inspiration. He says that he gets a
lot of his inspiration from other artist and their works. He gets his best ideas when
hes in the shower not thinking about his works.
Initial response- This artwork is very pretty and creative, not like any other
photograph I've seen. I like how this is different and has neutral, soft colors.

One of my favorite animals is a bear. I love the way they look and their big
bodies; even though they scare the crap out of me. I also love the outdoors, so I
was automatically attracted to this. When I first saw this painting it looked so
realistic I thought he took a picture of an animal and nature and blended them
together. I felt almost clean and I was out in nature exploring through the woods.
This artwork makes me want to go camping and get outside, which is weird
because its a picture of a bear. This is a piece or artwork that I would see in a
cabin or an outback store. I feel peaceful looking at this but also, a little scared.
This is a majestic looking kind of art. The approach that this artist took made the
bear not look scary and look almost nice looking. I felt like I was going on a walk
through nature and becoming one with nature. As I look at the photograph I see
how simple yet detailed every little thing is. I feel like I can almost relate to the
bear, because Im a its natural habitat, in the wild.
Description- This artwork has multiple layers, the first layer the negative
space which is a cream canvas. There is texture within the cream background,
it's texture almost looks like its cracking, or the paper was made back in the day.
The cream background fills about two-fourths of the painting. The second layer
is the bear, this also fills about two-fourths of the rectangular artwork. It almost
looks like the bear was standing up and the artist zoomed up and drew the bear
from the chest up. The chest of the bear is placed in the middle of the paper, a
centimeter away from the edge on both sides. The bear goes about three-fourths
of the way to the top of the paper. The bear gets slimmer the taller it gets. When
the bear gets to the top it is about one inch from both sides of the paper. The

bottom of the bear is about three inches wider than the top of the bear. The
detail that the artist used to make the bear look realistic is unreal. He shaded the
ears, top of head eyes and other parts of the body. The bear has multiple colors
some parts are black, white, cream and brown all of different shades. For
example the nose is white and cream with black shading around the nose and for
the nose. The head is lighter than the rest of the body, and the chest of the bear
is a rich dark brown. The right side of the bear is a lot darker than the left side.
He puts texture for the hair and the edge if the bear is ragged making the hair
look a lot more realistic. The third layer is a picture of a lake landscape. This is
where the colors is added making it a more inviting artwork. The image of nature
is incorporated inside as part of the bear's body. The whole right side of the bear
is the landscape and the left side is faded. The bottom of the bear is the dirt area
that intertwines into the trees and the bears body. There is skinny, tall trees that
are scattered throughout the ground one the foreground. The trees dont have
much leafs or color on them, and they are silhouette looking at the top. Some of
the top of the tree is faded into the face of the bear. There are little green grass
patches around the tree trunks and logs that are tipped over on the ground.
Theres a big patch of grass and bushes then the lake. The lake is blue and
green reflecting the mountains above it. The far right mountains have snow on
them and the right ones have trees and rocks. They mountains are all different
shades of green, gray and white. It looks like the sun just set behind the
mountains, and there is a glowing yellow, orange light rays, thats reflected in the
water a little. The sky is gray and really light blue with scattered clouds.

Analyze- Andreas Lie uses lots of different elements and principles inside
his artwork and the first principle that he uses is emphasis. He emphasizes the
bear in this photo from having a blank background, and the only color in the
photo is of the bear. He wants the focal point to be just of the bear and the habit it
lives in. One element that he focused on was texture. This artwork had many
textures, first in the background of the photo that I mentioned earlier with the
marble, cracking look surface. There's also texture for the bears hair, making it
look ragged and hard looking. There is texture in the soil of the making it look
grainy and a blemished look. The texture in the sky and the water has a soft and
cozy feel to them. The colors that he used all corresponded to one another. This
was a natural and neutral color scheme, which pulls the more nature feeling into
the image. Another element that he used was line in the front of the face of the
bear, in the trees. The trees lead the landscape into the face of the bear. Without
the trees to make lines in the image, the artwork would look unfinished. The
design of this artwork is very creative and magestic. There was a lot of thought
that had to go into the work of art to make the image flow. The bear actually looks
like it would live in that habitat that he was meshed with. If the artist put and
ocean with the bear the image would not flow and therefore not be as excellent
as this image is. The craftsmanship of this is also well done by how the trees
fade into the face and the soil fades into the body making the image look one.
Interpret- I think that this showing life from the bear's point of view. Taking
you into the bears element and seeing his habitat though his eyes. Its about
understanding their living space. Showing us the beauty inside nature and its

wildlife that sometime we take for granted. This makes you have a deeper
appreciation for nature and wildlife. If we keep on cutting down trees, littering,
polluting the atmosphere and hunting this beautiful life will be gone. There will be
nowhere left for the bears to go and we will not be able to enjoy this creation that
god created for us to explore. This artwork makes the bear look friendly and
cuddly. If we didnt know the background of the bear, this bear would not be as
frightening as most of us see this as. Which another good lesson could be don't
judge something unless you know the background story. Bears are mean and
can kill but imagine if you were in there shoes. If someone came into your
territory that you knew could hurt you, your protective instincts would come.
Judgment- I think that this artwork was a success because it's something
new that most people wouldn't think of doing. The creative element of this
artwork was impressive and motivating. This makes me want to be more creative
and look for new intriguing ideas. I would say that Lie used the Hedonist
aesthetic in his artwork. This artwork makes you feel pleasure and it's appealing
to the eye. For most of us, when we are in the peaceful outdoors surrounded by
beauty thats when we achieve the most amount of pleasure. When we look at a
picture that is associated with something peaceful we automatically feel pleasure.
I think Lie was successful because he made us feel pleasure in the photo, by
beautiful image of nature the soft and neutral colors he used.
