MACHINE DESIGN

Design of Gear
Gear drive is defined as toothed wheel which transmit power and motion from one shaft to another by
means of successive engagement of teeth.
Advantages of gear drive over other drives
(i)
(ii)
(iii)
(iv)
(v)
(vi)

To transmit exact velocity ratio.

To transmit large power.
It may be used for small centre distance of shaft.
It has high efficiency ( 86 % to 90% ).
It is reliable in service.
It has compact layout.

Disadvantages of gear drive

(i)
(ii)
(iii)

Since the manufacture of gears requires special tools and equipments, therefore it is costlier
than other drives
The error in cutting teeth may cause vibration and noise in operation.
It requires suitable lubricant and method of applying of lubricant.

Different types of gears:

(i)

Spur gear: In spur gear teeth are cut parallel to the axis
of the shaft. So these gears are used when the shaft are
parallel to each other. It can take radial loads on the
shaft only.

(ii)

Helical gear: Teeth of these gears are cut at an angle

with the axis of the shaft. The magnitude of the helix
angle of gear and pinion are same, but the hand of helix
is opposite. Helix angle is from 150 to 250. Can take
both radial and axial loads on shafts
