1. Students will learn the process of printing.
2. Students will understand the difference between printing and other art
forms.
3. Students will create a printed series.
4. Students will further grasp positive and negative space.

Materials: bench hooks, ink, paper, Styrofoam trays, wooden sticks, brayers

Procedure/Learning Experiences:

1. Week 1: The teacher will introduce printing as an art form and as a


technique. We will discuss the importance of printing in the history of man,
as well as specifically in the history of America.
2. The teacher will show examples of printing, such as newspapers, magazines,
and art.
3. The teacher will demonstrate the proper way to create a plate (in this case,
using a wooden stick and a Styrofoam tray). How to correctly ink a bench
hook, and use a brayer to apply ink to the plate.
4. A series of prints will be made from the plate, further showing how art can
be recreated exactly over and over using printing.
5. Week 2: Students will have a mini-review about printing, and will receive a
pencil and sketch paper. They will be told that they must use a famous work
of art as their inspiration: MONA LISA, STARRY NIGHT, THE SCREAM,
WATERLILIES, OLD GUITAR PLAYER
6. Students will choose their famous painting and sketch out their ideas.
7. When ready, students may begin etching their drawing onto the styro tray
with a wooden stick.
8. Week 3 and 4: Students will continue etching in their images, adding textures
and details.
9. Week 4 and 5: When ready, students will receive a bench hook, brayer, and
choice of ink colors. Their colors should reflect which artwork they chose as
inspiration. (ie: starry night should be dark blues and yellow)
10. Students will create a series of prints with their imagesup to 15 different
prints using various color combinations.
11. Each student will choose their best 4 prints to be mounted together as a
series. Their mounted artwork will be signed and titled.
