1. Students will create detail for an introduction (and eventually a story)
2. Students will use emotions and senses to create a believable setting

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT


Book (The Mysteries of Harris Burdick)
Chart paper
Sticky notes (three colour and one for each table)

PROCEDURE
Introduction (2 min.):
Attention Grabber: Now today we are going to talk about a mystery.
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: What is another word for mysterious, or something that is similar?
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: We are going to be quiet while I read this book and when we need to work
together as a group we will.
Advance Organizer/Agenda: Read this book, and choose a picture. Then we are going to talk about what we felt while
reading the book and that specific picture.
Transition to Body: Come over to the carpet and we will start into our mystery.
Body (25 min.):
Learning Activity #1: Reading the Story
Read the book putting emphasis on the preface, giving the children time to look at the pictures. (8 Min)
Assessments/Differentiation: Move book around and read slowly so everyone can comprehend. Assessment will be asking
comprehension questions and watching to see that everyone is listening.

Learning Activity #2:Group discussion


Talk about what the picture and the book made students feel emotionally, scared, mad, happy, sad etc. Write this on a
piece of chart paper or the board. Talk about descriptive words and adjectives. Are there other words to describe these
emotions (7 min)
Assessments/Differentiation: Make sure to call on various students and even those who seem off task. There are no wrong answers.
Assessment will be done in observation that they are participating in the discussion

Learning Activity #3: Sticky Note words


Talk about the senses and how we want to use those. Sight, hearing and touch. Sight is yellow, hearing is orange and
touch is pink. Write something you would see, hear and feel/touch in this picture. When you are done come stick them
on the correct place on the board. Discussion afterward about the words and how we are going to come back to it next
lesson. (10 min)
Assessments/Differentiation: discussion and independent thinking helps both the strong and the weaker readers. Assessment will

be done with the product of the words and participation in the game.

Closure ( 3 min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: What are a few new words you learned today?

Transition To Next Lesson: Next lesson we will be taking these words and creating an introduction to a story with
them based upon the picture.
