In this lesson the students will have been able to edit and punctuate an information report.
Assessment:
Before:
Identifying what could sound better, and where spelling and punctuation could be improved.
During:
Understanding why we use punctuation (i.e. commas are used so the reader can have a breath, or for
lists etc.).
After:
Being able to read and understand and information report, and to see how editing makes a difference to
a text. We will also be able to explain why we edit a text.
Teaching focus:
Teaching skills that the pre-service teacher would like to personally develop:

Lesson content:
A.
Introduction
10 mins
Students will begin on the floor as I introduce the idea of editing. We use editing to make sure
that our report is even better than what it is. I will prompt a class discussion about what we
could use to edit our text, and what we could do to make our report even better.
B.
Development
10-15 mins
As we read each paragraph, I will see if anyone could think of something we could change or
add to that sentence. I will explain why I change the numbers to words, and why we might
add more sentences to our season information.
C.
20 mins
As we go further through the text, we will be focussing on making sure the sentences are the
very best they can be. I might ask the students to think of a way I could join two sentences
together, and what punctuation I could use instead of a full stop. After each paragraph we will
read through the text to make sure it still makes sense, and that our editing makes the text
better.
D.
Closure
5 mins
Upon completion of the text, the students will create a page with four pictures, one for each
season, with a subtitle. The page must be checked by myself or the associate teacher before
printing. The foundation students will be with the classroom teacher, the grade 1 students will
go on to a computer and use clip art, and the grade two students will be on the iPads with
myself of the floor. After the students have printed their work, I will ask them to put it into their
tubs with their front cover.

Lesson 2
I will have learnt which students can work faster than others and which ones need more
encouragement. I will be focussing on keeping students on track, and ensuring that they can
have their picture page finished.
