COMMANDERS REPORT
I hope everyone is doing well! The Trail of Honor was a blast. A heartfelt thank you to all who pitched in and made it a success.
Our Civil War Relic Show is coming soon and we need all the help we can get. We need all hands on deck on June 17th, 18th, &
19th, 2016!!! Our speaker this month is Mississippi author, Mr. Brandon Beck. His topic is on the Confederate Cavalry in the
Confederate Heartland (General Forrest failing Strait's Raid). A $500 donation will be presented to a representative from the
Wounded Warriors of Mississippi organization, as well as a $100 prize and certificate to the winner of the Turkey Shootout.
We will concentrate on the upcoming Relic Show, our speaker is going to be great, so come early, bring someone with you, and
as sure as we had BB's flying by the thousands at the Trail of Honor, I will probably see you at our next camp meeting on June
4th at Penn's in Brandon at 7:00pm!

Just an interesting fact: Our last meeting on May 7th was
the 153rd anniversary of the murder of General Earl Van
Dorn, the subject of Bridget Smiths book!

RELIC SHOW UPDATE

As of may 24th, 2016 we have sold 237 tables for our Relic Show! We are currently working on radio
commercial ads, as well as creating newspaper ads. We have printed flyers that are to be distributed to
our members for placement in various businesses and establishments around the greater county area.
We really need to focus on selling more ads in order to raise money for our show. We also need to find
living histories, and start securing the names of volunteers that will be willing to help with the show!

Veronica Evans and daughter Tori Evans were presented certificates of

membership by Brandi Gray, MOCR Chapter President.

This weekend we participated in the trail of

honor! It was a great time! Special thanks to all our
ladies for their participation.
Next weekend we will be representing our chapter
for the moving of the Cooper's well headstones.
June 10-12 several of our ladies will be attending
the Reunion in Biloxi and participating in the ladies'
tea.
We have 27 members to date and more signing
up. Our newest and only rosebud from last week is
Makinzi Williams. She's 12 and so excited to be in
our group.

We had a great turnout for the May 7th meeting! Good food, good fellowship, and good stories from our guest speaker, Bridget Smith!

War Hero Without a Gun
When Desmond Doss was inducted into the U.S. Army in April 1942 he entered
service as a conscientious objector for his religious beliefs and served as a medic for
the 77th Infantry Division. From the beginning, the other men in his company
harassed and threatened Doss for his beliefs and quiet reading of the pocket-sized
Bible his wife had given him, even trying to get him transferred out of their unit.
On Okinawa, in the last Spring of 1945, his battalion assaulted a jagged escarpment
400 feet high. As the troops gained the summit, a heavy concentration of artillery,
mortar, and machine gun fire crashed into them, inflicting approximately 75
casualties and driving the others back. Doss refused to seek cover and remained in
the fire-swept area with the many stricken, carrying them one by one to the edge of
the escarpment and there lowering them on a rope-supported litter down the face of
a cliff to friendly hands. Each time he got one of them to safety he prayed, "Dear
God, let me get just one more man."
In three more battles in May, he unhesitatingly braved enemy artillery and mortar
shells, small arms fire, and showers of grenades to dress his comrades wounds and
evacuate them to safety. On May 21 while giving aid to the injured, he was seriously
wounded in the legs by the explosion of a grenade. Caring for his own injuries, he
waited five hours before litter bearers reached him and started to carry him to cover.
Along the way, Doss insisted on giving his stretcher to a badly wounded GI.
Awaiting a litter bearers return he was struck by a bullet, suffering a compound
fracture of one arm. With magnificent fortitude, he bound a rifle stock to his
shattered arm as a splint, and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid
station.
Through his outstanding bravery and unflinching determination in the face of
desperately dangerous conditions, Private First Class Doss saved the lives of many
soldiers and became the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional
Medal of Honor for outstanding gallantry far above and beyond the call of duty.

CAMP MEETING - May 7, 2016

In addition to a great guest speaker, big
crowd, and wonderful service from the
Penns staff as usual, there were a few
other details to attend to also. Not only
did the camp present the recently formed
Mary Ann Forrest Chapter of the Order
of Confederate Rose a donation in the
form of a very large check for two
hundred dollars, but we also welcomed
three new members to Camp 265! Those
members are (top to bottom) Mr. Bobby
Joe Denton, Mr. Eric Lantrip, and Mr.
Phillip Ryan Griffin. If you see these
gentlemen, please give them a warm
welcome to the SCV family!

Trail of Honor

The firing line was full all weekend with nothing but marksmen and sharpshooters!

The 14th annual Trail of Honor was held in

Jackson, MS on May 21st & 22nd, and we were
the first booth visitors encountered on the trail!
We had a BB gun shooting contest for the
kids, and we handed out flags to those who paid
to shoot. We raised money for the Wounded
Warrirors of Mississippi organization, we
gathered petition signatures for Initiative 58 #KeepTheFlag, and the ladies from the Mary
Ann Forrest Chapter of the Mississippi Order of
Confederate Rose were there recruiting new
members and helping out also!
It was a great weekend, beautiful weather,
and an awesome Tribute to American
Veterans!

What Is the Former Name for Memorial Day?

Memorial Day occurs on the last Monday in May and marks the solemn time when Americans honor the soldiers that
died in military service. When the observance was first declared in 1868 by General John Logan, it was called
Decoration Day in reference to a tradition of decorating the graves of those whose lives were lost in the Civil War and
its set date was May 30. In the years following World War I, the day picked up the more inclusive name Memorial Day
as people began to use it as time to honor all who died in all US wars. For many, the holiday signifies the unofficial
beginning of the summer season.
There is frequent confusion between Memorial Day and its companion holiday, Veterans Day. The purpose of
Memorial Day is to honor those who have died in American military service, while November 11, Veterans Day, is for
those who have served the US in war and survived. Veteran derives from the Latin veteranus meaning mature,
experienced and has been used to refer to experienced soldiers for centuries. Veterans Day was originally called
Armistice Day, marking the agreement that brought an end to World War I on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of
the eleventh month of 1918 (November 11th, 1918). In 1954, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day in
the United States. However, in some parts of the world, November 11 is known as Remembrance Day.

Lake Fest
Members from the Rankin Rough & Readys Camp #265 were present at Lake Fest
2016, working hard collecting petition signatures for Initiative 58.
The Mississippi state flag was adopted in 1894 by the state legislature. Some people
view the Confederate battle emblem on the flag to be offensive, but many others still
view it as a historic representation of our beloved South and a great source of pride and
heritage.
If you havent, or you know someone that hasnt already signed the petition to keep
the flag, please contact one of our members for more information on how to do so
TODAY! We need to make sure this flag continues to fly!
