Reflections and Insights

We successfully published our last edition of the school
newspaper for the year. This paper truly represented the
collaborative effort put forth by the staff because prior to the
publication teachers were emailing me with pictures and captions
from the field-trips they took students on, the events that were
happening in their classroom and awards that students were
receiving from competitions in both sports and academics happening
all over the state. This type of collaboration has helped shaped my
definition of community for ISLLC Standard 4, which has been the
focus of my internship. I had initially been focusing on creating a
collaborative working relationship between our school and individuals
outside of the schoolhouse, but have added to that is the
understanding of what Green (2013) identified as being a critical
factor in meeting the standard, collaboration. He reminds that this
is a concept that is often taken for granted and one cannot
assume that all individuals are knowledgeable about the processes
and procedures used to effectively collaborate (p. 13). In my own
experience, this was demonstrated by the fact that once teachers
knew how they could contribute to highlighting accomplishments in
the school paper, they did.
We had two more student articles get published in the Windsor
Journal this week. This brings a total of three student articles
published in the local paper since the official start of my project in
May, and we have two more articles in the queue for the months of
June and July. This way, even though the students wont be in school,
we will still have their articles receiving publication.
Finally, this week I sat for the Connecticut Administrators Test
(CAT) on Saturday. This exam began at 8:30 am and concluded at
5:30 pm. The exam presented us with four different scenarios, two
pertaining to instructional analysis and teacher support for both
elementary and secondary teachers and two pertaining to school
improvement for both elementary and secondary schools. Success
on the exam requires that the test taker incorporate their knowledge
of the standards of school leaders into their responses illustrating the
connection between theory and practice. The exam required us to
