Hazards Identification

Emergency Overview

: Extremely flammable gases- Category 1- Danger (H220)

Compressed gas- Warning (H280); may explode if heated
Explosive with or without contact with air. (EUH006)
: Acetylene is a flammable, compressed gas packaged in cylinders at high
Pressure. Do not puncture or incinerate container
Leaking gas fire: Do not extinguish unless leak can be stopped safely.
Heating may cause an explosion
Eliminate all ignition sources if sage to do so
In high concentrations may cause asphyxiation

Has a garlic-like odor in its industrial form

: Inhalation
It should be noted that before suffocation could occur, the lower flammability
limit of acetylene in air would be exceeded; possibly causing both an explosive
and an oxygen-deficient atmosphere.
: Store in well-ventilated place
Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames/hot surfaces- NO smoking
Take precautionary measures against static discharges
: GHS02- GHS04

4 FIRST AID MEASURES

First Aid Measures
Inhalation

Ingestion

: In low concentrations may cause narcotic effects. Symptoms may include loss
of mobility/consciousness, dizziness, drowsiness and nausea. In high
concentrations may cause asphyxiation. Victim may not be aware of
asphyxiation. Lack of sufficient oxygen may cause serious injury or death.
Remove victim to uncontaminated area wearing self-contained breathing
apparatus. Keep victim warm and rested. Call a doctor. Apply artificial
respiration if breathing stopped.
: Ingestion is not considered a potential route of exposure.

5 FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

Flammable Class
Specific Hazards
Extinguishing Media
Specific Methods

: Extremely Flammable in the presence of sparks, oxidizing materials, flames,

heat and static discharge.
: Exposure to fire may cause containers to rupture/explode
Incomplete combustion may form Carbon Monoxide.
: All known extinguishants can be used.
Do not extinguish until source is shut off.
: If possible stop flow of product.
Move away from the container and cool with water from protected position.
Do not extinguish a leaking gas flame unless absolutely necessary.
Spontaneous/explosive re-ignition may occur. Extinguish any other fire.
Cylinders exposed to fire should not be moved until they have reached an
ambient temperature in the event of internal decomposition occurring.

Special Protective Equipment For

Fire Fighters
: Fire fighters should wear appropriate protective equipment and selfcontained breathing apparatus.

6 ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal Precautions

: Evacuate area
Ensure adequate air ventilation

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus when entering area unless

atmosphere is proved to be safe.
Eliminate ignitions sources.
Isolate area until gas has been dispersed.
: Try to stop release if this can be done safely.
: Ventilate area

7 Handling and Storage

Handling

: Suck back of water into the container must be prevented

Avoid contact with pure copper, mercury, silver and brass with greater than
70% copper.
Purge air from system before introducing gas. Do not allow back feed into
container. Keep away from ignition sources including static discharges.
Close valve after each use and when empty.
Protect cylinders from physical damage; do not drag, slide or drop. Use
suitable hand truck for cylinder movement.
Use only properly specified equipment which is suitable for this product, its
supply pressure and temperature. Contact your gas supplier if in doubt.
Refer to suppliers container handling instructions.
o
: Keep container below 50 C in a well-ventilated area.
Segregate from oxidant gases and other oxidants in store.
