REFUSE COLLECTION AND REFUSE DISPOSAL STUDY AT

KTM IPOH

Figure : Daily activity at the train station

KTM Ipoh is known to be heavily dense with users every day.
When there are customers and workers, they will engage in
producing solid wastes such as plastic wrappers, bottles, water
cans, papers and food wastes. Judging by the copius amounts of
users, therefore the amount of wastes that will be produces will
be even greater. The management of the train station must have
efficient waste management to prevent any sort of contamination
and pollution caused by unwanted wastes.
The types of waste produced at the terminal is the solid
wastes such as plastic , bottles, drinking cans, papers, food
polystyrene and food wastes. These must be carefully selected by
the workers so the process of recycling can take place even as the
rest of the waste will be carried off to the landfill.
The management of the station, NPO Management handles
this situation with great efficiency. They have hired ..SDN
BHD to attend to the refuse collection and disposal.

1. Refuse Collection

Refuse collection is defined as transfer of solid wastes from the

position of usage until it is attended to be collected by the
garbage truck to be brought to the landfill. Many factors were
taken into consideration to make the flow of waste collection flow
smoothly.
These factors include;
a. Type and size of waste bins to be used.
b. Position these bins will be placed around the terminal.
c. Schedule for the bins to be serviced.
d. How the wastes are going to be serviced.
1.a Type and size of waste bins used.
At the terminal, they used three types of waste bins. They are the
regular waste basket, trash cans and the dumpster.
The regular waste baskets are placed inside each office, shops
and toilets to dispose solid wastes.

Secondly, trash cans are also place all around the terminal main
spaces, lounge and waiting area. Then cleaners will service them
and carried off to the dumpster.

Dumpster area.

The third is the main dumpster. The main dumpster is place at the
outside of the building. This is to prevent contamination and easy
for service works.

The refuse collection management also made a systematic

schedule to service these waste trash cans. The cleaners hired by
the management will be handling the service however the waste
disposal will be handled by another contractor.
The wastes from the office will be collected by cleaners from
the office each morning as it is according to schedule. Some of
the office workers will dispose their waste themselves at the trash
cans at the main spaces.
The cleaners will continue their waste collection on the main
trash cans. Below is the flow of waste collection. It started from
the office waste then to the general solid wastes and the cleaners
will use the service elevator present to bring them down to the
dumpster. This is to avoid tainting the main space area and to
avoid discomfort for the users.
The last destination will be the dumpster outside of the
building. The management hired Wellgon (M) SDN BHD. This
company has been handling wastes all around Klang Valley. The
schedule of the waste collection is on Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturdays. The company uses the standard waste lorry.

2. Refuse Disposal.
Refuse disposal is defined as collection, treatment, disposal
technique of wastes in the terminal. There are four types of refuse
disposal which are incineration, recycling, and disposal at the
landfill.
As for KTM Ipoh, Sdn Bhd applied the landfill technique.
Following to the schedule, they will collect the collected waste
and will deport them at Ulu Johan Lahat, Perak . Below is its
location;

When the wastes were brought to the landfill; the company will
not dump all of the waste already. They will collect recyclable
materials such as tins, bottles, glass bottles and papers.
From here, we concluded, the solid wastes collected from the
terminal will be first, recycled and then other solid wasted will be
dumped into the landfill. This will minimise pollution and increase
chances of reusable items.

Figure 8 : Excess wastes will be dumped into the landfill.

As a conclusion, we have learnt that waste collection and
disposal has to be taken seriously and efficiently to ensure users
comfortability and to maintain the terminals cleanness. If these
aspects are not taken care of, much negative impact will happen

such as sickness outbreak and the landscape of the terminal will

be affected.
