World Day of Prayer, Reflection and Action Against

Human Trafficking - 8th February
February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child
and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she dedicated
her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the
poor and suffering.
The idea for this day came after Pope Francis entrusted two Vatican academies to
study the problem of human trafficking, and a group of women religious asked the
pope to raise greater awareness in the church about the issue by establishing a
worldwide day of prayer and fasting.
Religious Congregations in Australia were inspired by a 2001 call to action from
800 Leaders of Catholic Women Religious meeting in Rome
to work in solidarity with one another within our own religious communities and
in the countries in which we are located
to address insistently at every level the abuse and sexual exploitation of women
and children with particular attention to the trafficking of women which has become a lucrative multi-national business
In his World Day of Peace Message on 1st January 2015, No Longer Slaves, but
Brothers and Sisters, Pope Francis invited us to practice acts of fraternity towards
those kept in a state of enslavement. Let us ask ourselves, as individuals and as
communities, whether we feel challenged when, in our daily lives, we meet or deal
with persons who could be victims of human trafficking,
or when we are tempted to select items which may well
have been produced by exploiting others. For the full
statement by Pope Francis go to http://

PARISH EVENTS
St Marys Celtfest 2015 During the consultation period of the Pastoral
Plan, some parishioners expressed a wish to revive the Parish Festival. We
investigated the possibility but due to the challenge to parish human resources and the modern-day regulatory environment, we decided to re-invent it as
CELTFEST. It will be celebrated on Friday 20th March with a Dinner Dance at St Marys
Hall from 6:30pm with a 3-course meal by Miillers Catering and music by the K-Dels$40
p/h-Tickets available at Parish Office. Then, a Market Day will be held on Saturday 21st March
in the Church grounds with stalls, entertainment, food and drinks from 10am to 3pm. The Par-

ish will man food and drink stalls and private stall-holders will be invited (as at Jumpers &
Jazz & Rodeo time). However, we still need volunteers to set up the hall and man the Barbecue & Drinks stalls. We invite you to be a part of this community-building event. All
community members are welcome and are requested to dress appropriately to the theme.

REFLECTION

Prayer For Rain

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us this
earth to care for and delight in. Look with
mercy on our need for rain for our parched land. We
pray that life-giving rain will soon fall. We pray for those
suffering from the severity of this droughtpeople
working on the land, and those in business who depend
on farming and grazing for their livelihoods. Father,
help them to know your love and care, and to bring their
burdens to you.
Guide all those who are seeking to provide help and
bring healing in the midst of so much pain. We ask

In touching Simons mother-in-law and then allowing

her to serve him, Jesus is breaking down traditional
barriers. He brings wholeness and holiness to her by
his presence. The Kingdom of God cannot tolerate
prejudice and taboo, just as sickness and evil have no
place in the Kingdom.
This text shows us a typical day for Jesus-the first of
his ministry. He listens to the Word of God, then worships with his community; he relaxes in the home of a
friend; he pursues his work of healing and preaching
and, before dawn, he withdraws alone to develop his
relationship with the Father through prayer. There is a
wonderful pattern of balance here between prayer,
work and rest.
When the disciples find him, they want him to return
to Capernaum to the acclaim he is receiving. Instead,
Jesus insists that the boundaries of the Kingdom be
pushed out. The Kingdom of God must reach further
and further. It is for this that he came!

Jesus took her by the hand and helped her up.

Who has taken you by the hand and helped you
when you needed it?

What would you like Jesus to help you with?
