Bigfoot in Nadi

Lots selling fast at the Legalega subdivision, says NLDL

By
SERELISONI
MOCEICA
A total of 140 lots will be completed by August this year at the new Bigfoot Subdivision in Legalega, Nadi.
This was confirmed by Nadi Land
Development Limited recently after
a $7milion investment on developments for Stage Two.
Managing director Kamal Sen
said sales for the lots for Stage One
have all been completed which
comprised of four residential lots
and two agricultural blocks.
One commercial lot is left and 22
residential lots to be completed by
August, Mr Sen said.
Stage One had six lots which
were divided up into four residential
and two commercial properties.
Stage Two has 140 lots comprising of 100 residential lots, 20 commercial, 10 light industrial and nine
tourist apartments.
Mr Sen said this was the first major project in the country by the NLD
Limited and the lots were at high
costs as they were of quality standards.
We are grateful of the support of
the government and the approvals
for the project to go ahead, he said.

full utility services such as water,
electricity, street lights, tarsealed
roads and the sewer.
The subdivision has a total of 232
lots and divided into Stages One and
Two.
The government is also in sup-

port of housing development in the

jet set town especially with plans to
become a city by 2017.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama had earlier said that new housing settlements mean more follow
up developments in terms of medi-

cal care, schools, infrastructure and

more.
NLD according to Mr Sen was set
up for the sole purpose of land development in the town in 2014.
The company is co-owned by Mr
Sen, an accountant by profession

and quantity surveyor and draftsman

Shayam Sundaram.
Future developments of NLD include a 16 acre development close
to the Nadi International Airport for
which the development is expected
to commence from January 2017.

Fiji - the way the world should be

FROM THE DESK

Road to Rio
And its pressure time now.
The Vodafone Fiji 7s squad
is not leaving any stones untouched in preparation for
Rio.
While the players are trying
every bit to get a ticket to Brazil, head coach Ben Ryan is
really struggling to determine
his best 13 to Rio.
Ryan has made it crystal
clear that the team is now on
performance-based both on
and off the field, and any player could be dropped from the
squad at any time should he
rupture Ryans set of codes.
It was also a long-time
dream for player Isake Ice
Katonibau to represent Fiji
in Rio, unfortunately he had
been released from the camp
due to chronic injuries as he
will not be able to recover on
time.
Ryan confirmed that there
would be no replacement for
Katonibau and he would continue working with the current
players in camp.
The current squad include:

Alivereti Veitokani, Amenoni Nasilasila, Apisai Domolailai, Emosi Mulevoro, Jarryd Haynes, Jasa Veremalua,
Josua Tuisova, Josua Vici, Kitione Dawai, Leone Nakarawa,
Masivesi Dakuwaqa, Nemani
Nagusa, Osea Kolinisau, Pio
Tuwai, Samisoni Viriviri, Savenaca Rawaca, Semi Kunatani,
Seremaia Tuwai, Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Vatemo Ravouvou,
Viliame Mata, Waisea Nayacalevu
We wish Ryan and his
team all the best for Rio.

More Air Traffic Controllers for AFL

By SERELISONI MOCEICA
A total of 35 air traffic controllers have graduated within
the last eighteen months from
Airport Fiji Limiteds (AFL)
aviation academy.
Graduating from the three
months Air Traffic Control
course, 14 graduated late 2014
and 21 recently received their
certificates after AFL decided
to increase the number of air
traffic controllers to ensure
safe operational levels.
AFLs Executive Chairman
Faiz Khan said the increases
will allow for more systematic
release of traffic controllers
into advanced training.
Airports Fiji Ltd aims to be
the leader in the Pacific in air
traffic surveillance.
Our message to the controllers is to work hard to continue to build their capacity
and grow, Mr Khan said.
Out of the recent 21 graduates, 11 were females and Mr
Khan said the women were all
picked on merit.
We did not go out and
deliberately make choices to
create gender balance, Mr
Khan said.
However, the selection
criteria that we went through
about 6 months ago yielded
these results, he added.
He said AFL was blind
when it came to gender issues
or similar biases.

Chamber desires Nadi as Special Tourism Zone

By SERELISONI MOCEICA
The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry wants
Nadi town to be declared as
Special Tourism Zone.
This is part of its submission to the 2016 2017 national budget.
In a statement sent, the
Chamber said business houses were in support of the idea
as tourists will take more time
out to shop in town and other
areas.
The town is the most active area that is well policed
and protected but the activities tend to die out by 10 or
11pm, said NCCIs president

Dr Ram Raju.
Tourists and locals alike
are denied the privilege of
entertainment and other business activities and we feel this
is discriminatory.
He said the declaration
of Nadi town into a city next
year will encourage increased
productivity and investments
particularly regarding tourism which has contributed
immensely towards the Nadi
economy and the country as
a whole.
The Chamber also requested that roads be upgraded to
allow for easy access to popular rural backpacker resorts.
Dr Raju said there were
many tourist related attrac-

tive tours and activities such

as Sabeto mud pools, Sabeto
Orchid gardens, Zipline and
waterfalls in Sabeto, Nausori
Highland Ecotours, Tau Caves
and Momi gun sites, Sigatoka
River Safari, Abaca Village and
Waterfall, etc.
All these accessible roads
should be tarsealed to allow
maximum patronage and
economic activities, increasing productivity and vibrant
economy, the president said.
The Chamber said such
incentives were needed for
untapped potential in the rural areas.
The submission also included a request to review
taxes paid by tourists which

amounted to 25 percent.
We are competing with
many other South Pacific Island countries who seem to
be winning many potential
visitors that could have chosen Fiji but the high taxes bites
their pockets, the statement
said.
This also includes Airport
Departure Tax which the
Chamber believed also needed to be reviewed.

AFL Makes Largest

Recruitment for
Engineering Services
By SERELISONI MOCEICA
Eleven trainee aeronautical technical officers (ATOs)
have been chosen by Airports
Fiji Limited, the largest recruitment so far to join its Air Navigation Engineering Services.
Newly appointed ANES
Manager, Kelepi Dainaki said
the trainees will undergo 12
months training which was in
line with the ICAO Doc 1792
training manual for Air Safety
Electronics Personnel followed by practical on-the-job
training.
During this 12 months
training they will go through
five phases before they get
their Aeronautical Facility
Technician License and rating
from CAAF, Mr Dainaki said.
This rating will allow them
to become qualified ATOs
and work on the complex
CNS/ATM systems, he added.
The manager said this was
an opportunity for the recruits
to gain extensive knowledge
and skills in the maintenance
and support of air traffic management systems and other

relevant areas.
Mr Dainaki reminded the
trainees of the challenges that
lay ahead.
We welcome our new
trainees to the AFL family
but at the same time remind
them of the challenges that lie
ahead.
AFL Executive Chairman
Faiz Khan welcomed the
new recruits and emphasised
AFLs philosophy of teamwork
and delivery through effective
communication and understanding of roles.
We want to be a world
class airport operator. How do
we achieve that? We achieve
that by having good systems
and processes; and good people, Mr Khan said.
Mr Khan said continual
capacity building and growth
has become part of the work
culture at AFL.
Trainee ATOs: Amitesh
Gounder, Lorna Bure, Anusheel Chand, Akariva Rabakewa, Muritikei Navuki, Ravneel

Rotuma Runway
Extension in the Pipeline
By SERELISONI MOCEICA
Contractor selection for the
new extension for the Rotuma
Runway will be finalised in the
next two months.
According to Airports Fiji
Limited, pre-tender due diligence and selection process
is now well underway.
AFLs Executive Chairman
Faiz Khan said two chartered
flights carrying AFL staff,
shortlisted bidders, consultants and a representative
from the Department of Environment flew to Rotuma for
site inspection.
He said AFL looks forward

to working with the Rotuman

community for the success of
this project.
Government has a vision
of better connecting Fijians
in outer islands to our main
land and boosting their local
economies.
In Rotuma we will be able
to land the ATR 42 aircraft after the runway upgrades.
Mr Khan said a compliant
runway that allows for the
landing of bigger aircrafts will
result in greater frequency
and lower air fares.
He said the present air
fares were very high citing
the chartered travel for site
inspection as an example

Domestic Helpline to provide counselling and support for Fiji women. Photo: SUPPLIED.

By SERELISONI MOCEICA
The new Domestic Violence helpline will be up soon
as the first of its kind for the
country.
This is also a priority for the
Ministry of Women, Children
and Poverty Alleviation according to the ministrys permanent secretary Dr Josefa
Koroivueta.
The Ministry is committed to the establishment of the
Domestic Violence Helpline.
It has a budgetary allocation of $170,000, and we are
almost in the final stages now,
where we are going to award
the tender to the appropriate

successfully build our airport

infrastructure to world class
standards. Governments vision is to improve our airport
facilities; our network connectivity throughout Fiji and
globally; and improve our service standards. Thus we are
carrying out the multi-million
dollar upgrades at Nadi International Airport. We hope all
Fijians will be proud of this
iconic landmark once completed. We are also spending
millions in improving our air
traffic surveillance capabilities; lengthening the Rotuma
runway; planning a new terminal and longer runway at
Nausori; exploring the possibility of a new airport in Vanua
Levu; extending the Matei
runway; building new terminals in Koro and Vanuabalavu
that were destroyed after TC
Winston; etc. We have a busy
schedule over the next few
years, explained Mr Khan.
Mr Khan has thanked the
great effort and team work by
AFLs entire staff.
Khan stated that the one
point we would emphasize
above most is that infrastructure cannot be built with money alone. We need people for
their ideas, contributions,
hard work, dedication and vision in order to build. AFL has

service provider, Dr Koroivueta said.

The Permanent Secretary said that the Domestic
Violence Helpline would also
strengthen the partnership
between government agencies and non- government organisations who directly and
indirectly deal with domestic
violence cases.
The ministry said counseling services will be free
through the helpline and qualified personnel will be available to give relevant advice
and support to those seeking
it.
Other concerned members of the public would also
be able to get advice on how

to deal with problems on behalf of the victims.

Statistics from the Fiji
Womens Crisis Centers
Somebodys Life, Everybodys
Business Report, highlighted
that Fijis rates of violence
against women and girls are
among the very highest in the
world.
Around 64 percent of
women who have been in intimate relationships have experienced physical and or sexual
violence by their husband or
partner according to FWCC.
Meanwhile the ministry
also applauded the success
of the National Child Helpline
which so far has dealt with
922 genuine callers.

Main
issues
reported
through the helpline included child physical and sexual
abuses, child neglect, child
emotional abuse, gender
based violence and other issues regarding family welfare.
Dr Koroivueta added that
the Ministry also looked forward to the upcoming budget
allocation.
For us it is the rearrangement of our business priorities, rearrangement of our services but not losing out on the
rationale behind it because
we are dealing with services
for women, children, people
living with disabilities and senior citizens, he added.

where after calculations a return ticket for each person in

the flight cost $2,703.
Some may argue one can
get a round-the-world air fare
ticket for $2,703.
With these runway upgrades we will be able to
boost our outer island local
economies in line with the
Governments vision, the
Chairman said.

AFL Records Unprecedented

Financial Results
Airports Fiji Limited (AFL)
released its record breaking
audited financial results for
the year ending 31st December 2015.
AFL Executive Chairman
Faiz Khan announced that
AFL made record operating
profits before tax of $46.04
million in 2015, compared to
$18.02 million for the same
period in 2014. The results
include interest income of
$1.02m from term deposits
compared to interest expense
of $0.63m.
This meteoric turnaround
in profits was made possible
through a successful restructure of our revenues and expenditure. 2015 was a year in
which we recorded highest
operating revenues and lowest operating expenses over
the past 5 year period, advised Mr Khan.
The full effect of the revenue restructure will be seen in
2016 and beyond. Our EBITDA
(earnings before interest taxation depreciation and amortisation) in 2015 was $44m.
2016 EBITDA is forecasted
at around $80m. Only as far
back as 10 years ago we were
breaking even or making losses, said Mr Khan.
Having strong fundamentals is critical if we are to

effective communication and
delivery. We believe in continual improvement and growth.
We believe in the ability to
make courageous decisions
and overcome challenges.
We believe in the value of
time. We believe in humility and respect. Without our
team we will neither achieve
these meteoric profitability
turnarounds nor be able to
build infrastructure to world
class standards.
AFL is going through a human resource evolution. We
have managers in 30s who
contribute exceptionally. We
also have managers in their
60s who perform remarkably.
Age is no barrier. We are really
excited about the many future
leaders we see all around us.

Once Upon a Time

Buddy and friends take
the routine bus route from
Votulaevu to Martintar every
morning. So far, within this
month, there have been three
breakdowns, tyre punctures
and some buses have just refused to work. Buddy thinks
that maybe the buses that follow this route are cursed. Or
maybe, just maybe, the buses
need to be changed. Food for
thought for bus companies. it
is no wonder then that illegal
hiring of cars is a booming
business around this area.
Buddy thinks that maybe

a new car will probably bring

her travelling expenses down.
And she now wishes that man
who offered her a loan at a
local bank appears like Tiks
from the Crest Chicken advertisements. The four hours travelling every weekend from
Nadi to the capital is taking a
large chunk out of her budget
and very soon she may start
walking like a chair in the
Sunset bus, if that was possible. Now she understands
why some come and never go
back after a while.
Buddy and her friends
brave the cold Nadi night to
talanoa over a basin and
the topic revolves around the
very picture perfect rugby sevens stars and their uniforms.
Buddys friend reckons that
having just shorts on, with
the Fiji flag on them would be
enough for the team, no need
for the jerseys. This encourages a roar from the rest of the
gang who come up with their

own ideas of skimpy outfits

for the boys. Go Fiji Go! And
we havent even got to Rio yet.
A phone conversation inside a minibus on its way
down to Suva goes like this.
Are you the boy that knocked
up Lusi? Let me tell you something, I am Lusis cousin and I
will come and find you wherever youre hiding and I will
beat you up. And the ranting
goes on before the receiver
finally switches off his phone
from the other end. Buddy
then sits quietly and sympathises with the lady as she vents
about Lusis problem. Buddy
turns and asks, Are you Lusis mom? . The lady with an
incredulous look says, No my
goodness, do I look that old?
I am Lusis neighbor! Buddy
then learns that said Lusi is
living with the same man that
lady was calling. Well, a life
without comedy we would
have without the busybodies
of this world.

Asset Meet, a Success USP students awarded scholarships to China

USP MEDIA
The University of the South
Pacifics (USP) Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council Mr
Winston Thompson officially
opened a symposium on
Public Financial Management
organised by USPs Pacific Islands Centre for Public Administration (PICPA) at Novotel in
Nadi from 30 to 31 May 2016,
which was a huge success.
Mr Thompson was pleased
to see the level of participation from public officials from
Fiji and Pacific island countries including representatives
of various development partners.
He said in the economic
and financial context, asset
management has two general
definitions one relates to
the advisory services where
an advisor or financial services company are engaged
to provide a range of professional services to manage and
coordinate a clients financial

portfolio.
Mr Thompson said the
other definition which is more
relevant in the context of the
symposium describes it as a
process of organising, planning, acquiring, disposing off
or the care and maintenance
of assets using a whole-of-lifecycle approach.
As public officials, it is
this latter definition, which is
more applicable in our day
to-day work, he noted.
Director PICPA Parmesh
Chand said the symposium,
which focused on issues,
challenges and opportunities
on Asset Management, was
well attended by 20 delegates
representing 13 Pacific Island
Countries (PICs) and New
Zealand.
There was also excellent
representation from partner
organisations like the Asian
Development Bank (ADB), Pacific Association of Supreme
Audit Institutions (PASAI), Pacific Regional Infrastructure
Facility (PRIF), and Pacific Fi-

nancial Technical Assistance

Centre (PFTAC) including USP.
As well, there was an excellent range of resource personnel drawn from industry
locally and abroad who provided resource inputs at the
symposium.
Mr Chand said the objectives of the symposium were
fully accomplished.
The objectives were to
provide an avenue where relevant senior officials involved
in asset management in the
PICs have an opportunity to
share experiences, hear from
experts and learn international best practices in public
sector asset management,
he noted.
Following comprehensive
discussions and a well-coordinated exchange of information and views, it was agreed
by participants of the symposium that there be continued
emphasis on human resource
capacity development for
those involved in asset management.

Diabetes is a major NCD: Konrote Insurers Add $35k

By ANUSHIL KUMAR
Diabetes in itself is a major
NCD, which accounts for the
second-highest rate of NCDrelated deaths in Fiji.
These were the opening
words of the President of Fiji
His Excellency Major-General
Retd) Jioji Konrote during
his address at the 2016 Diabetes Foot Care Symposium
in Suva.
In fact, the three leading
causes of disability and deaths
in Fiji are ischemic heart diseases, diabetes and stroke.
Diabetes is caused by four
main lifestyle factors: Smoking, poor Nutrition, Alcohol
and Physical Inactivity. The
acronym is SNAP. Additionally,
poor diabetes control causes
complications, which our
health experts have termed as
SNAKE, Mr Konrote said.
SNAKE stands for compli-

cations to the Skin, Nerves,

Arteries, Kidneys and Eyes.
His Excellency said the
main strategy of the Fijian
Government through the Ministry for Health and Medical
Services is to control SNAP to
prevent SNAKE!
For this to happen, all Fijians must choose a healthy
lifestyle.
We need to eat healthy
and balanced diets. We need
to be physically active by doing regular exercises on a
daily basis. We need to quit
smoking and reduce our
consumption of kava and alcohol. We also need to have
enough rest including having
adequate sleep. Choosing a
healthy lifestyle is the only
way we can reduce the risk of
contracting NCDs.
Mr Konrote acknowledged

plementation of the project.

A multi-sectorial collaboration model like this offers
hope in our fight against this
deadly scourge.
As Fijis Champion in the
campaign against NCDs, I

pledge to do my part and to

lead by example in taking
every opportunity to encourage all our people to choose
a healthy lifestyle so that we
can live longer, healthier and
happier lives.

Marsh Limited, an insurance company, boosted the

Prime Ministers National Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Fund with a $35,000 donation.
The leader of the Marsh
Fijian Practice and company
vice president, Ilyaz Koya
presented the cheque to the
Attorney-General and Minster

Mr Koya said the amount
had been collected by Marsh

staff from Fiji and in the wider

Marsh and McClennan Group
in Australia, New Zealand and
Singapore.
According to Mr Koya, all
had wanted to be part of the
rebuilding process in Fiji in
the wake of Cyclone Winston.
Minister Khaiyum thanked
Mr Koya for the donation.
On behalf of the Fijian
people, I want to thank Marsh

APTC partners with Fiji National University

A new partnership agreement has been signed between the Australia-Pacific
Technical College (APTC)
and the Fiji National University (FNU) to allow the two
institutions to work collaboratively over the next two years
(2016-2018) on the delivery of
APTCs Painting and Decorating and Applied Fashion Design and Technology qualifications.
The programs will be accredited and delivered by
APTC for the first three semesters, with the view that FNU
will establish an equivalent
program from 2018. This will
enable continuation of the
courses at FNU with the ability
for graduates to also achieve
an Australian qualification
through the process of APTCs
Recognition of Prior Learning.
APTC is an innovative development project funded by
the Australian Government,
delivering Australian-standard
skills and qualifications for
a wide range of vocational
careers for skilled workers
across the Pacific.
Under the partnership, a
major focus is on the capacity
building of FNU trainers to ensure sustainability of the training in Fiji.
APTC will also improve the
Fashion Design and Technology facilities at FNU Nabua
campus to ensure the training
area and equipment is current

She added that APTC is
delighted to join FNU and industry to support the training
requirements of local enterprises in Fashion Design and
Technology and also Painting
and Decorating trades.

APTC is committed to
working with the garment
manufacturing and broader
fashion industry in Fiji. To
date, we have delivered very
successful work-based training programs to upskill existing workers in companies in
the Suva area and in the West.
This industry is poised for

growth and relies on a skilled

workforce to ensure quality
and efficiency. A dedicated
training facility will support
the skills requirements of the
industry, both now and into
the future, she elaborated.
In his remarks, Mr Jannif
said that the signing of the
MOU with APTC reaffirms

FNUs commitment towards

providing quality education,
tailor-made to meet the demand from the industry.
This MOU comes at an
important time for FNU and
the Fiji Fashion and Garment
Industry, as this sector is set to
become one of the key drivers of our economy. FNU has
been working for some time
now with industry partners to
assist in developing the Fashion industry and we are happy
to partner with APTC to take
our programmes to the next
level.
This is a historic occasion
for FNU and the Fashion Industry in Fiji. We are excited to

More Civil Marriage Celebrants Appointed

By ANUSHIL KUMAR
The appointment of two
more civil marriage celebrants
have been done to meet the
growing demand from international visitors looking forward to get married in Fiji.
And from Fijian couples,
these celebrants want to get
married outside traditional
settings.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum handed Alipate
Bolavatonaki and Kalesi Senikavika their certificates which
allows them to conduct civil
marriages anywhere in Fiji at
any time.
Alipate and Kalesi join seven other celebrants who have
already been appointed after
they received their certificates
from the Attorney-General.
According to Minister Khaiyum, Fiji has become a top
wedding destination for international visitors and it is critical to have an adequate number of celebrants available at
resorts and hotels around the
country to meet the growing

demand.
More and more foreigners
are wanting to get married in
Fiji because of the romantic
setting, the friendliness of our
people and the increasing
number of specialist services
being provided for the wedding market.
It is becoming an increasingly important sector of our
tourism industry and we need
to do everything we can to cater for it. More Fijians are also
choosing to marry at home or
in other settings and we want
to provide them with alternative options as well, he said.
Alipate and Kalesi thanked
the AG for the opportunity to
become celebrants.
It as an honour and a privilege to be able to marry couples visiting the Mamanucas.
I am based at Plantation
island so this will allow me
to conduct marriages on the
island for the increasing number of people wanting to get
married there, Alipate said.

Seventeen months after
the launch of the new stateof-the-art $25million biscuit

their biscuit range with the addition of the new Nice and

We do a lot of product research plus testing to perfect

We listen to our customers when they tell us what

For Family and Art

By SERELISONI MOCEICA
It is simply a matter of makings things happen for potter
Taito Lawakele as he lays out
his Ka Beci pottery for display at his booth.
The Matuku family man
said contemporary pottery
making was his passion and
the ability to make a finished
product out of clay was a skill
that he was proud of.
I started off at Martintar
and then from there moved to
Votualevu where we live now
to set up the business with my
family, Mr Lawakele said.
He said pottery making
was a skill that had to be perfected over the years as clients
were very particular about the

kind of materials that were on

sale.
We have all kinds of materials that we make including
pottery, incense stick holders,
ashtrays, wall hangings and
some clients would even request for articles such as footwear and business card holders,: the potter said.
Mr Lawakeles Ka Beci
necklaces, rings and ear rings
were a sight to behold, a far
cry from the Fijian named collection which means trash
or downtrodden.
The only reason why I
named this collection Ka
Beci was because normally
one would not take a second look while theyre just
on display so I would always
encourage interested people

to wear it and see how beautiful it transforms and looks on

their necks, he said.
President of the Fiji Crafts
Society, Niqa Tuvuki said potters such as Mr Lawakele encouraged the use of natural
resources to set up their businesses.
She said such craft practitioners also promoted Fijian
traditions through their craft.
These skills need to be
developed and promoted or
they will die out, Mrs Tuvuki
said.
Thus the more we showcase their finished products
and how they have developed
themselves as artists, the better it is for their business and
also for us as promoters of this
traditional art.

Training Critical Part of Industry

Development: NCCI
By SERELISONI MOCEICA
Training plays a vital role in
the enrichment of human capital through continuous capacity building and development.
This was the comment
made by the Nadi Chamber
of Commerce and Industry
president Dr Ram Raju at the
recent 2016 Industry Discussion Forum in Nadi.
The forum was organized
by the National Training and
Productivity Centre of the Fiji
National University where the
NTPCs Acting Director, Peni
Taoi was chief guest.
From employers perspectives, it is obvious that we all
are contending with human
resource
challenges
that
require a more holistic ap-

proach than ever before, Dr

Raju said.
Given the fundamental
importance of training and upskilling in any organisation, it
is intuitive to expect that successful management of human capital plays a significant
role in achieving organisational goals, he added.
The president said training was a critical part of employment and encouraged
employers to take it as an investment and utilize the one
percent wage bill every employer pays.
I believe that through alliances like this, we all can and
will do more and factor our
needs in the design of programs that would meet our
needs, Dr Raju said and commended the NTPC for organizing such forums to discuss the

needs of the industries.

He said that such forums
enabled the re-designing of
courses that meet the relevance of todays industry
needs.
I commend NTPC for
maintaining its standards to
date and continuously contributing towards industry capacity building, up-skilling and
equipping employees with
relevant and contemporary
skills for a sustainable career,
Dr RAJU said.
NTPC has also been doing
excellent work in promoting
in-service quality training and
productivity and business excellence in the country; this
has led to multiple benefits in
a diverse range of organizations both in the private and
public sectors, he added.

Courses undertaken at NTPC commended for relevance to todays industry needs.

hired out at local events, said

business manager, Mrs Tokalautawa.
She said the idea was first
initiated when they noticed
that photo booths were a
must-have at events they had
attended overseas.
Thus we thought since
there was no local one, we
would start a business ourselves, she said.
The Blackbox Photobooth
has three backgrounds that
clients can choose to take pictures against and can be hired
for $1250.00 for three hours.
During these three hours,
people can take as many photos as they want as there is
unlimited printing, Mrs Tokalautawa said.

The photo booth has been

in popular demand and the
duo said this was through
word of mouth as of now.
We have yet to launch a
Facebook page but through
travel agents and the grapevine we have been getting
many requests for hire.
It is fun and youthful and
the in-thing right now, we encourage everyone to come
have a look and take a few
photos , the business manager added.
For interested event organisers, the Blackbox Photobooth has its own website
on www.photoboothfiji.com
where the pricing list can be
accessed and contact for hire
is also available.

Sympathy Plans More

Improvement for Mortuary
By SERELISONI MOCEICA
Nadis only mortuary has
plans to open a new dignified
crematorium soon.
Sympathy Funeral Services
Funeral Director Atish Chand
said the cremation of bodies was an integral part of a
funeral service that was still
missing in Nadi.
Sympathy Funeral Services has been in charge of
the mortuary since the tender
was awarded to them by government.
Mr Chand said in addition
to looking after the mortuary,
his family business also li-

aised with government in improving services to the public.

We also have contracts
with embassies, we transfer bodies from the airports,
clearance, packaging, we
even pack ashes to send overseas, the funeral director
said.
The business began operating fifteen years ago and
now has 15 facilities or freezers.
I wanted to provide a service that was more affordable
to the public because I lost my
mother 15 years ago and the
expense of funeral services
was way too high, Mr Chand

said.
The mortuary now has
changed under the watchful
eyes of Mr Chand who has
also beautified the gardens
and he encourages the public
to provide inputs or ideas as to
how the mortuary can be improved further.
We are open 24 hours so
I invite anyone interested to
come visit the mortuary and
tell us what more needs to be
done.
Mr Chand has acknowledged the government for
enabling private companies to
look after previously government owned facilities.

The President of Fiji His Excellency Major General (retd)
Jioji Konrote together with the

Sabha of Fijis 2016 convention and its 99th Annual General Meeting at the University
of Fiji Saweni campus in Lautoka.
During his address, Mr
Konrote said this was his first
formal engagement with the

he was very grateful to join
the Sabha on such an important occasion in the Arya
Samaj calendar.
He said the Arya Samaj has
a rich history that is anchored
in the Indenture Labour System of the colonial era that
brought the first batch of 463
Indian labourers to our shores
on 14 May 1879.
Allow me on this occasion to pay homage to the

Girmitiyas who committed

themselves to the welfare of
the then Fijian colony, Mr
Konrote said.
His Excellency also expressed the Nations appreciation for the immense contribution of the Arya Pratinidhi
Sabha of Fiji and its members

With the inception of the
first Indian school the Gurukul Primary School in 1918
- the Sabha formalized its venture into the field of formal
education and took a lead
role in educating people of all

It is pleasing to note that
the Sabha today owns and

16 primary schools and 6 secondary colleges accommodating some 10,000 students
this year.
To commemorate its centennial, the Sabha in 2004
took a decision to establish a

that The University of Fiji became the first privately owned
local university that opened its
doors in March 2005 attracting
as many as 174 students.
The theme for this years

Your theme recognises
the need for all of us to embrace the values of harmonious coexistence and respect

The campaign was initially

However, due to the impacts of Cyclone Winston,
Tourism Fiji partnered with

has to offer and promote the
hashtag, #FijiNow.
Vodafone Fiji provided the
Matai Agents free SIM-cards
for the campaign, which included; 2GB Free Data, free
$10 recharge (local/international calls), free 100 minutes
call and 100 SMS on the same
network.

Affordable Housing for all Fijians, REALB urged

By SERELISONI MOCEICA
Government has encouraged the real estate sector
to find avenues to address
affordable housing in the
country, according to a recent
statement.
Minister for Industry, Trade
and Tourism Faiyaz Siddiq
Koya made the comments recently during the Real Estate
Agents Licensing Board National Workshop at the Tanoa
International Hotel.
The minister said the government has taken the initiative towards this issue including rental freeze on residential
properties, the Help for Homes
project amongst others.
Hence, whilst the Government is taking steps to make

affordable housing available

for Fijians, it is also your duty
as real estate agents to work
within the ambits of the law
and ensure that your industry
is clean of unscrupulous dealers, Minister Koya said.
The minister said growth
of the industry was important
but affordable housing as is
provided in the constitution
was a key priority for the government.
We are aware of the rising
demand for housing, especially in the major urban centres,
therefore, over the past year,
various policy changes have
been undertaken to ensure
that affordable residential
properties are available to ordinary Fijians.
The theme for the first

ever workshop of its kind was
Recognising your roles and
responsibilities in the real es-

tate industry and a result of

consultations held between
stakeholders.

Real Estate Agents Licensing Board chair Dr. Abdul Hassan said the workshop pro-

vided real estate agents with

platforms to further explore
laws and policies in the sector.
The vision of the board
is to develop and administer
a more vibrant real estate in
Fiji with a mission to create
and sustain an environment
of professionalism, expertise,
integrity and quality in the
sector.
A total of 355 sales worth
over $180 million were made
in the first three months last
year in the western division
alone.
Minister Koya also noted
that in the western division
alone for the first three months
of 2015, 355 sales transactions
were worth over $180 million.

World Rugby delegates meet in Nadi

By ANUSHIL KUMAR
The World Rugby Committee led by Chairman Bill Beaumont and his team including
Agustin Pichot, Brett Gosper,
David Carrigy and chairman
John Jeffrey held its meeting
in Nadi on Monday, June 13.
Prime Minister and the
President of Fiji Rugby Union
Voreqe Bainimarama was
grateful to host the World Rugby delegates meeting for the
first time in Fiji.
It is a great honour to have
played host to you in Fiji for
the first ever meeting in the
Pacific Islands of the World
Rugby Committee.
Just as it is an honour to
host the union representatives

from Tonga and Samoa, Fijis

rivals in the Pacific Nations
Cup but above all our neighbours and friends.
While we all play to win
as individual nations, it is the
health of rugby in our region
that ultimately binds us together and is our main priority, the PM said while welcoming the guests.
He said this renewed emphasis on the needs of the
players is reflected on the
committee itself with the
choice of Richie McCaw as
the players representative.
Rugby greats dont come
any greater than Richie and
its been wonderful to again
welcome him to Fiji.
The Prime Minister said it is
a great era for rugby in the Pa-

cific in both the 15s and the 7s

and the game has never been
stronger or more popular.
My Government has contributed 2-million dollars towards bringing the Super 15s
to Fiji for the first time and we
all look forward to the Crusaders and the Chiefs going head
to head at the ANZ Stadium on
July 1.
Beyond that, every Fijian,
of course, is hoping our World
Champion 7s team can bring
back our first gold medal from
the Rio Olympics in August.
Wed like to eventually
host the World Sevens competition here in Fiji.
And we all look forward to
the first Rugby World Cup in
Asia in 2019.
Hon. Bainimarama also

thanked the World Rugby for

their support in numerous
ways.
I want to thank World
Rugby for financing the Pacific Nations Cup and for everything else you are doing to
strengthen the game, including improving our standards
of governance.
I can assure you of the full
support of both the Fiji Rugby
Union and the Fijian Government for this program of reform.
Because whatever the
challenges it has brought, it is
ultimately good for the code,
good for the players and good
for everyone who loves rugby.

The countrys largest international sporting event, Fiji

International received a major boost after Victoria Wines
came onboard with a new
multi-year relationship.
The new affiliation designates Victoria Wines as the
Official Wine Supplier of the
Fiji International until 2018.
Managing Director of Victoria Wines, Liam Hindle said
they plan to continue engaging wine consumers through
the Fiji International and is excited by the tournaments cosanctioning relationship with
the European Tour.
The Fiji International in
now going into its third year
partnership with Victoria
Wines and we are very happy
with the way that the event is
developing, Hindle said.
The recent announcement of the Fiji International
becoming part of the European Tour makes it bigger
and better and increases the
events footprint into Europe
and other parts of the globe.
As such we feel that the
Fiji International is the perfect fit for us to showcase our
Victoria Wines partners to a

larger audience both globally

and domestically, and we look
forward to a long lasting relationship.
Head of Commercial for
the Fiji International, Matt
Porm said Fiji International
has enjoyed the support of
Victoria Wines since the inaugural tournament in 2014 with
many synergies existing between the two stakeholders.
The demographic of our
fan base represents an ideal
fit for Victoria Wines. We see
a very strong alignment between our brands, Matt mentioned.
Golf and the Fiji International is all about excellence
and so too are the brands
displayed by Victoria Wines
throughout the tournament.
The past two years we
have enjoyed working with
the team from Victoria Wines
to ensure both the Fiji International and the wine labels
carried by Victoria Wines continue to enjoy strong growth.
The 2016 Fiji International,
which is sanctioned by the
PGA Tour of Australasia and
European Tour, will be played
from October 6-9 at Natadola Bay Championship Golf
Course.

European Tour which offers a
unique experience for our students to be a part of.
Fiji International event
manager Harmony Thomas
said the sixty university students will be a part of the Fiji
International crew which will
take them both inside the
ropes and behind the scenes
of the tournament.
She said they will gain
wide and varied experience
from roles such as caddy bib
and TV wardrobe registration,
carry board marshals, drink
delivery marshals, hole marshals, leaderboard marshals,
mobile marshals, registration
marshals, scoring centre attendants and walker scorers.
Being a volunteer at a
world class professional golf
tournament like the Fiji International is a great experience
but will prove even more valuable to the development of
practical work skills for the

Tourism and Hospitality students at FNU, Harmony said.

It will provide them the
opportunity to work alongside
industry experts from Australia and Europe providing
them an inside look at a major
sporting event.
All FNU students who volunteer their time to assist in
the successful staging of the
Fiji International will be rewarded with a completion of
work certificate from the PGA
of Australia, the tournament
organiser, which will be valuable in their CV of achievements when they are applying
for their first roles out of University.
The Fiji International will
provide the FNU volunteers
with an incredible opportunity
to learn on the job. We believe they will gain some great
knowledge and practical skills
on how major events operate. This type of experience

becomes invaluable when

students first launch their careers, added Thomas.
While the students will
gain a huge benefit from volunteering so too will the Fiji
International.
A world class tournament
the size of the Fiji International requires in excess of
200 volunteers and 100 paid
industry experts to deliver the
event each year, continued
Thomas.
With the students building their skills whilst at University by volunteering at the Fiji
International, we hope to contribute to a talented pool of Fijian tourism experts who one
day might work year round
on the delivery of the tournament.
Each student will receive
training ahead of the 2016 Fiji
International to ensure they
understand the roles they
have been assigned to.

Sporting donation boosts school

By ANUSHIL KUMAR
It was a schoolboy-inspiration that empowered the
donation of Kiwi sports equipment to the Sigatoka-based
Koroinasau District School.
The donation included
balls for different sports together with inflatable football
goals and rugby posts from
pioneering Wellington-based
sporting goods supplier Packaworld International.
School Head Teacher Loata Finau said the equipment
was received with festivity
and song by the children and
teachers of the school.
She said the 93 students at
the school were immensely
grateful, and the goals would
provide their community with
better opportunities for structured play.
This is the only school in
our community, and we also
host community groups and
youth groups, Mrs Finau said.

The selected students will

their areas of study.
FNU Head of Department,
Food and Beverage, Eric Jiojie

We have pre-selected 60

Packaworld CEO Peter
Roberts said Packaworld was
proud to support Rileys gift,
and had great respect for initiatives that provided young
people with the opportunities
to play sport.
Its really important that
people, especially the young
ones, have the opportunity to
play.
Ensuring people around
the world can play sports like

Mr Roberts said Packaworld believed in sharing the

The reason Packaworld

ideal for extending the reach
of sports to remote communities, he said.
The equipment was presented to the primary school
on Monday by volunteer
teacher Dalen Pilitati and her
mother Newlands College
Bursar Rikki Pilitati, who had
transported the goals to Fiji on
a visit to her daughter. Air New
Zealand also assisted by waiving extra baggage charges for
transport of the equipment.

Fiji Secondary Schools under 17 champions Nadi Muslim College (NMC) started their
2016 campaign on a high after coming from
behind to beat the rivals Sangam SKM College (SSKMC) 3-1 in a scintillating final during the district playoffs at Nadi Muslim College grounds.
NMC made their way into the final thrashing Votualevu College 4-0 in the first semifinal while SSKMC edged Nawai Secondary

School 1-0 in the second knockout encounter.

The Nadeem Mohammed-coached national
champions got a tremor in the final as SSKMC
took advantage of a defensive blunder by the
opponents and netted-in the opener as they led
1-0 at the breather.
A totally diverse structured Boys in Green

equalizer with Aisea Tabua scoring directly
from a corner kick.
The hosts totally meant business from there
as Adarsh Sharma got them into a 2-1 lead before nippy Amini Tivasa Tava blasted-in from an
acute angle to seal the win.
Speaking to Jet Sports, three-times winning
coach Nadeem Mohammed was ecstatic with
