Classroom Rules and Procedures

Classroom rules:
1. Have a respectful attitude.
2. Follow the teachers directions.
3. Come to class prepared and ready to learn.
I want to be consistent with my students in terms of Classroom Procedures.
1. Entering the classroom: Enter quietly and politely; remove your hat if you are wearing
one; follow the appropriate procedures for each time of day (e.g., morning, after lunch).
2. Leaving the classroom: Tell me where you are going; do not run or play in the hallways
or restrooms. Students may not leave the classroom without permission.
3. Beginning of class: Be ready to work when the bell rings. Begin the Bell Ringer on the
overhead projector. The Bell Ringer will only be up for a limited amount of time, so work
efficiently. I will take attendance at this time.
4. Being tardy: We will follow school policy. All late students are expected to have a seat
and take out materials to begin working on the appropriate assignment.
5. Class dismissal: Clean off your desk; pick up any trash or books around your desk; be in
your seats and wait quietly. I will dismiss you, not the bell.
6. Signal for attention: When I need your attention, I will stand in front of the class, raise
my hand, and wait for everyone to be quiet before I begin speaking. Please stop what you
are doing, do not talk, look at me, and listen for directions.
7. Caring for supplies: Recap markers and glue; clean up all supplies and put them in their
assigned places.
8. Participating in group-work: Move to your assigned group quietly and quickly. Take all
the materials you will need; do your personal best; thank the others in your group before
you separate. Keep your voice level low as not to disturb the group beside you.
9. Helping other students: In a cooperative classroom, we help one another; if someone
needs help with directions or reading an assignment, help him or her if you are able; if
someone needs help with understanding the problem, tell him or her to ask me for help.
Do not put down another student who asks for help.
10. Handing in completed work/homework: Be sure your name, date and class period is on
your paper in the upper right-hand corner; put your paper upside down in the
"homework" basket. I will collect the assignments at the beginning of class.
11. What to do with unfinished work: Let me know if it is not finished; if I ask you to keep
an unfinished assignment, put it in your work folder.

12. Using the restroom: There is a girl pass and a boy pass. Usually only one is allowed to
go at the time. (Emergencies are the exception).
13. Going to your locker and getting water: These visits will be allowed on an as needed
basis.
14. Using the pencil sharpener: Quickly sharpen pencils before the Bell Ringer; if your
pencil breaks during an assignment and you do not have another one to use, raise your
hand and ask to use the pencil sharpener.
15. Getting a tissue: You may get a tissue whenever you need one; throw the used tissue
away and make sure it lands in the trash.
16. Throwing away trash: You may throw away trash if I am not teaching the class; make
sure all trash lands in the can.
17. Pledge: Stop what you are doing and stand up; place your right hand over your heart; say
the Pledge of Allegiance if you so choose. Stand quietly during the moment of silence.
18. Visitors in the classroom: Treat visitors respectfully.
19. Fire drill: Stop everything; stand up and head for the door quickly, without running or
pushing; wait patiently, calmly, and quietly in line outside until we are allowed to go back
into the school building.
20. Staying organized: Bring all books and materials to class and take what you should with
you when you leave.
21. Free time: If you finish an assignment, first work on any unfinished assignments. When
you finish those, you may choose to read a book, write a story, work on a research
project, or peer-tutor someone who needs your help.
22. Following directions: Please follow directions the first time they are given. If you were
not paying attention, look on the board for the assignment. Ask me for help if you are
lost.
23. Turning in papers: You will pass papers up and to your right. The student on the outside
row will then pass them forward. If some students are not finished with their
worksheet(s), they can finish them during class if appropriate and turn them in the
designated basket on my desk before they leave.
24. Scheduled checkout: Please let me know as you enter the room if you will be leaving
before class ends. Pack your materials when you are scheduled to leave and be sure you
have copied down any assignments.

25. Computers and other technology: You are not allowed on the computers without my
permission. If a computer assignment is given, ample time will be given for you to do
your work.
26. Severe behavior: Any student who uses profanity, fights, or damages school property
(this includes the property of the teacher and other students), will be sent to the office
immediately.
27. Classroom discussions: Please participate, it counts as a grade. Make all questions
relevant to the current discussion. If your question is off the topic, write it down and ask
me later.
To prevent bullying and intervene appropriately when bullying occurs, I will:
1. Enforce school and district policies and procedures on bullying: I will do my part to
implement them effectively. School rules for bullying will be clearly posted in my
classroom. I will let all of my students know bullying is always unacceptable.
2. Support the bullied child: I will do this in a way that allows my student(s) dignity and
to feel safe from retaliation and increase supervision to ensure bullying is not repeated. I
will contact the parent of the bullied student, as well as the principal and/or counselor.
3. Offer guidance to student bystanders: I will let my students know how they might
appropriately intervene or get help next time.
4. Impose immediate consequences: The consequences for bullying will be logical and
connected to the offense.
5. Notify parents: I will let the bully know he or she is being watched and their parents will
be contacted as well as the principal.
6. Conduct classroom activities around bullying: I will help my class identify bullying in
books, TV shows and movies, and discuss the impact of bullying and how it could be
resolved. I will hold class meetings in which my students can talk about bullying and peer
relations.
7. Treat students and others with warmth and respect: I will let my students know that I
am available to listen and help them.
