Definition
 Figurative :
- Figure means :

1. representation of something

2. a diagram or illustration
- Figurative means using a figure of speech, not
literal.
- Figure of speech = a word or phrase used for
special effect and not literally.

 Expression :
- Express means :

1. clearly stated

2. put ideas into words

3. make your feelings known

- Expression means way of somebody shows his


or her feelings.

What is figurative expression?
- The words may not convey the literal meaning of
them.


- They may convey the indirect meanings which may
be just the opposite to their literal meanings.


- Example :
 Idioms
 Simile
 Metaphore
Idioms
 Latin: idioma = special property
 Greek: idiōma = special feature, special
phrasing
 Idiom is an expression, word, or phrase that
has a figurative meaning.
 It is separated from the literal meaning or
definition of the words of which it is made.
Example 1
 The Phrase Yellow Press does not give the
literal meaning that the press which is in
Yellow color.
 On the contrary, it conveys the meaning of
The News Papers which publish sensational
and unscrupulous stories about crime, sex
etc...
Example 2
 The Phrase In the same boat does not convey
the literal meaning.
 It has the figurative meaning that in the same
misfortune or circumstances.
Other examples
 To be at daggers drawn – to be deadly enemies
.
 Up to date – recent, modern
 Down and out – penniless, ruined .
