Definition
Figurative :
- Figure means :
1. representation of something
2. a diagram or illustration
- Figurative means using a figure of speech, not
literal.
- Figure of speech = a word or phrase used for
special effect and not literally.
Expression :
- Express means :
1. clearly stated
2. put ideas into words
3. make your feelings known
- They may convey the indirect meanings which may
be just the opposite to their literal meanings.

Greek: idiōma = special feature, special
phrasing
Idiom is an expression, word, or phrase that
has a figurative meaning.
It is separated from the literal meaning or
definition of the words of which it is made.
Example 1
The Phrase Yellow Press does not give the
literal meaning that the press which is in
Yellow color.
On the contrary, it conveys the meaning of
The News Papers which publish sensational
and unscrupulous stories about crime, sex
etc...
Example 2
The Phrase In the same boat does not convey
the literal meaning.
It has the figurative meaning that in the same
misfortune or circumstances.
Other examples
To be at daggers drawn – to be deadly enemies
