Title: Heart Disease in America

Speaker: Mohammad Shamim
Specific Purpose: How to avoid heart disease
Thesis statement: Many Americans today die of heart disease, and heart
disease has become a common death.

I. Intro
• Did you or do you know someone who has or died of heart disease?
• I didn’t but it wouldn’t take long before I have a person in my
family to have heart disease.
• (From the Alternative Medicine Encyclopedia) Heart disease, also
called coronary heart disease (CHD) or coronary artery disease
(CAD), is the leading cause of death for both men and women in
the United States. According to the American Heart Association,
deaths from coronary artery disease have declined somewhat since
about 1990, but more than 40,000 people still died from the
disease in 2000. About 13 million Americans have active symptoms
of coronary artery disease.
• First- I’ll talk about what heart disease is
• Second- The history of heart disease
(Transition)- (You all maybe wondering what is a heart
disease?)
II. Body
• Heart disease is the narrowing or blockage of the arteries and vessels
that provide oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart.
• Heart disease is caused by Atherosclerosis.
• (Defined by the Alternative Medicine Encyclopedia) Atherosclerosis
is the build up of plaque on the inside of blood vessels. Atherosclerosis
is often called arteriosclerosis, which is a general term for hardening
of the arteries.
• If you’re wondering what plaque is? Plaques are a mixture of fatty
substance.
• Atherosclerosis can also cause heart attacks, stroke, and Angina.
• Angina is chest pain or discomfort that occurs when the heart
muscle is not getting enough blood.
• (Transition: lets talk about some history now)
III. Body
• Before 1915, doctors, physicians, and scientists didn’t know that
much about heart disease.
• Until they created the American Heart Association (AHA)
• The AHA created a program that diagnosed the symptoms and
helped doctor know how to take care of a Heart Disease Patient.
• (From the AHA) A pioneering group of physicians and social workers
formed the first Association for the Prevention and Relief of Heart
Disease in New York City in 1915. They were concerned about the
lack of heart disease information. At that time, heart disease
patients were considered doomed, limited to complete bed rest. So
these physicians conducted studies in New York City and Boston to
find out whether heart disease patients could safely return to work
• I have just handed you three charts with number.
• As polled by Center for Disease Control (CDC) of men and women
above the age of 18 and ethnicity.
• (Transition: lets talk about the symptoms and the cure of heart
disease)
IV. Body
• Some symptoms of Heart Disease are:
o Chest discomfort
o Discomfort in other areas of the upper body
o Shortness of breath
o Breaking out in a cold sweat
o Feeling nausea
o Light–headedness.
• You maybe wondering how can you prevent heart disease
• (From CDC)
o Healthy diet
o Maintain a steady cholesterol level
o Prevent high blood pressure by drink less soda
o No tobacco
o Moderate alcohol use
o Maintain a healthy weight
o Exercise a lot
o Diet and nutrition is a key factor
• (Transition: as of conclusion)
V. Conclusion
• Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States,
but now the number of death each year are lowering due to the
new technologies.
• We have to watch what we eat and what we do: if not then heart
disease will most likely to be apart of your life.
(Closing: Do whatever you want but just don’t become a victim of heart
disease)
