Design of Fasteners

07.01. The bracket shown in SK 11 is fixed to a vertical steel column with 05 Nos. of Bolts ,
as shown. To find the size of the Bolt and thickness of the arm of the bracket when allowable
stress in Tension and Shear are 75 and 35 MN / m2. respectively.

07.02. A square , single threaded screw jack has 12 mm. pitch. It is to lift 13 Tonnes. The
friction radius of the collar is 2.5 cm. The coefficient of friction between the threads of the
screw and base is 0.15 and that between the screw and the collar is 0.13.
Determine the followings;--
1. the diameter of the root of the screw for an allowable stress in compression of 425 kg /
sq. cm. [6.5 cm.]
2. the size of the lever to raise the load if the permissible stress in the material being
1,300 kg / sq. cm. [5 cm.]
3. the force required at the end of 150 cm. Long lever to raise the load. [91.5 Kg.]
4. the twisting moment exerted at the root of the thread. [9,500 Kg.]
5. the efficiency of the screw and the collar. [18.1%]

07.03. Describe the relative Advantages and Disadvantages of Square, Acme and Buttress
Thread.

07.04. Explain with a neat sketch what is Overhauling, Self Locking and Efficiency of a screw.

07.05. What is Turn Buckle? Explain with sketch ( in suitable SCALE). What are its Industrial
uses.

08. Fastening by Pin, Cotter and Knuckle

08.01. Design a standard Knuckle Joint, subjected to Alternative Push and Pull, where the
design parameters are;--
Axial Force acting on Rod is 150 KN.
Material for Pin, Fork and Eye are same.
Permissible Tensile Stress is 400 N/ m2
Permissible Shear Stress is 0.6 times of Permissible Tensile Stress
Permissible Crushing Stress is 1.3 times of Permissible Tensile Stress.
Design by Calculation method. Draw a neat Dimensional sketch, in scale and label all parts.
