Antigone
Exodus
1. Interpret lines 2 – 5. How do they relate to our play?

2. In Greek drama the scene does not change (all of Antigone takes place in front of the palace). Thus, action
that might take place elsewhere must be reported by a messenger of some kind. What news does the messenger
bring?

3. Who is Eurydice?

4. What did Creon and the messenger do before going to Antigone’s vault?

5. What does Creon see when he arrives at the tomb? What has happened to Antigone?

6. Creon begs for Haimon’s forgiveness (“I come to you on my knees” (line 67)). Why do you think Haimon
responds as he does (spitting in his father’s face and lunging at him with his sword)?
7. Eurydice exits without a word and Creon enters bearing Haimon’s body. Why does the chorus say that
Creon is “bearing his own damnation?”

8. Creon has entirely repented of his folly. He speaks of his own lack of “civic wisdom.” What does he mean
when he says, “The pains that men will take to come to pain?”

9. What additional bad news does the messenger now bring (line 102)?

10. Just before she died, Eurydice uttered a curse against—whom (line 116)?

11. Does Creon finally realize what his “tragic flaw” was (line 135-138)?

12. The Choragus says that the ultimate wisdom is to be found—where (line 140)?
