CENSUS 2001

POPULATION OF INDIA

The Indian Population on 1st March 2001 was 1,027,015,247 of which


531,277,078 were males and 495,738,169 were females. The most
populous State in the country continues to be Uttar Pradesh with a
population of 166,052,859 and the least populous State was Sikkim with
the population of 540,493. Lakshadweep with a population of just
60,595 is the tiniest part of the whole country.

The percentage of persons capable to read and write in any language in
the whole of India was 65.38. The percentage of literate males worked
out to 75.85 and females 54.16.
