Virginia
a. Jamestown, Virginia founded in 1607
b. Virginia Company of London received a charter from King James I

c. Since the king was annoyed with greed displayed by the Massachusetts Bay Colony
i. 1679- separated New Hampshire and made it a royal colony
III. Massachusetts
a. Consisted of the Pilgrims from Plymouth Rock
i. Pilgrims = Separatist Pilgrims = the purest of Puritans
b. 1629- non Separatists Pilgrims secured charter to form the Massachusetts Bay
Company
c. Governor Winthrop- first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony
i. Believed he had “calling” from God to lead the new religious experiment
ii. Helped Massachusetts prosper in fur trading, fishing, and fish building industries
d. Formed a congregational church consisting of all males
e. Town governments consisted of male property owners
f. Puritans
i. Believed in the power of God
ii. Shared the “Protestant ethic” (in terms of work)
g. Ann Hutchinson
i. Claimed that a holy life was no sure sign of salvation

IV. Maryland
a. 2nd plantation colony, 4th overall colony
b. 1634- founded by Lord Baltimore
i. Goal to create a refuge for his fellow Catholics
c. Blossomed in terms of tobacco
i. Dependent on indentured servants like Virginia
d. 1649- passed the Act of Toleration
i. Backed by the Roman Catholics of the representative government
ii. Tolerated everyone except for Jews and Atheists
V. Connecticut
a. 1635- Hartford founded
b. 1639-drafted the document known as the Fundamental Orders
i. In effect known as the modern constitution
c. 1638- New Haven settlement started to build up
i. Set up an alliance with the government of Massachusetts
d. 1662- Charles II gave Connecticut a sea to sea charter
VI. Rhode Island
a. 1644- secured a charter from Parliament
b. Roger Williams
i. 1636- fled to the Rhode Island area
ii. Built the Baptist Church at Providence
iii. Believed in the complete freedom of everyone including Jews and Catholics
1. Even sheltered the abused Quakers
c. Known as the “sewer” because it was the place for all the people of other religions who
were not accepted

i. Sent to Rhode Island after being exiled by the Puritans
VII. North Carolina
a. Originally part of the Carolinas
b. Result of “poverty stricken outcasts and religious dissenters”
c. 1712- officially separated from Carolina and became a royal colony
VIII. New York
a. 1609- English explorer Henry Hudson ventured into the Delaware Bay and New York Bay
b. New Netherland
i. 1623-1624- planted on the Hudson River as a permanent settlement
ii. Established by Dutch West India Company due to its quick-profit fur trade
1. Bought Manhattan Island from Indians
c. New Amsterdam
i. Later became known as New York City
ii. Run by the Dutch company
1. No enthusiasm for religious tolerance, free speech or democratic
practices
d. New Amsterdam became New York after the Duke of York
IX. New Jersey
a. 1664- two noble proprietors received the area from the Duke of York
i. 1674- One proprietor sold West New Jersey to a group of Quakers
b. 1702- West and East New Jersey combined to form New Jersey which became a royal
colony
X. Carolina
a. Formed as a result of increased royal involvement
b. 1670- formally created after King Charles II granted 8 of his Lord Proprietors
land
c. Flourished due to close economic ties with the sugar islands of the West Indies
d. Slave system brought to the Carolinas
e. Rice was the principle export crop of the Carolinas
f. Later split into North and South Carolina
XI. Pennsylvania
a. Founded by William Penn
i. Penn was a Quaker (formerly known as the Religious Society of Friends)
ii. 1681- Received grant from King who called the area “Pennsylvania”
iii. 1681- Penn formally “launched” his colony
b. Quakers
i. Pacifists
ii. Believed that everyone was a child in front of God
iii. Originally fled to Rhode Island, N. Carolina, and New Jersey
XII. Delaware
a. Swedes planted the colony of New Sweden on the Delaware River
i. Later absorbed by New Netherland after small military expedition by the Dutch
in 1655
ii. Later became known as Delaware
XIII. Georgia
a. Became known as “the buffer colony”
b. 1733- formally founded as a royal colony
i. Used to separated the Carolinas from the Spaniards
c. Produced silk and wine
d. Founded by James Oglethorpe
