 COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT & PHILANTHROPY

Unang Hakbang Sa Kinabukasan Moved by a study

that shows the lack of school materials as a major
reason for the prevalence of public elementary
school drop-outs, we initiated the Unang Hakbang
Sa Kinabukasan Project (UHSK). Backpacks with
basic school materials are given to incoming grade 1
public elementary school children from the poorest
municipalities in the country. These children can
now go to school with dignity, while their parents
are more motivated to enroll them.

Unang Hakbang Sa Kinabukasan Part II (UHSK part II)

The Unang Hakbang Sa Kinabukasan project helps
to encourage its chosen beneficiaries to, first, go
to school, " start getting an education; and
second, to inspire these same students to remain
in school, precisely because they are adequately
equipped with the notebooks, writing pads,
pencils, crayons, eraser, sharpener, and even a
school bag that they will need. However, the
school supplies this project gives to its
beneficiaries at the beginning of the school year, in June, eventually need to be
replenished, especially towards the second half of the school year.
The Numbers Speak

spirit of Bayanihan in the Filipinos by inspiring them to give their time and to volunteer

willing to share their time and resources to alleviate the plight of those in need.

 ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY

Kapuso Para Sa Kalikasan (KapKal)

The Kapuso Para Sa Kalikasan is the Kapuso

Foundation's tree planting project in areas
where the Foundation rebuilt schools
damaged by natural calamities. These areas
are prone to erosion and landslides partly
caused by the dearth of trees which hold the
soil in place. The Foundation hopes that
through the project, no one will have to
suffer from losing a home, a source of
livelihood or a school building.

'Kapuso ng Kalikasan'

The country’s leading media company GMA Network is also among the industry’s
leading advocates of the environment as it continues to implement numerous green
initiatives within its premises. The Company’s environmental advocacy program dubbed,
Kapuso ng Kalikasan, which promotes environmental awareness and conservation and
perpetuates eco-friendly practices and projects, indeed, begins right within its
compound.

For a number of years, the company has been adopting green practices (i.e. energy and
water conservation) that are integrated with its business operations.

“We take pride in our continuing efforts to help conserve our

resources. By giving priority to our conservation measures, we
are not only able to help Mother Earth, we are also able to
save a considerable amount of money from our consumption
of basic utilities like water and electricity,” says GMA’s Head
of Facilities, Nicky Prieto.

Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps

For instance, according to Prieto, the company has invested
on new fluorescent fixtures with multiple light reflector
surfaces which reduced office lighting consumption by 50%,
Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps that have lower wattage but provide the same amount
of illumination as halogen lamps and energy saving devices on air conditioning and
frequently used equipment to save on energy costs. The investments make P1.15 million
savings in electricity consumption every month.

Waste Management Scheme

GMA Network is likewise conscious of proper waste disposal and has been
implementing a waste management scheme that encourages employees to reduce,
recycle, and reuse office materials and supplies. In 2009 alone, the Network was able to
generate close to 50 tons of recyclables that made around P200,000 in revenues.

Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)

GMA’s newly constructed GMA Network Studios, equipped with the most
technologically advanced broadcast equipment in the country, has a sewage treatment
plant (STP) that produces an average of 50 cubic meters per day of treated water for re-
use. STP’s treated water is used for flushing toilets, watering plants, and cleaning
facilities.

The Clean Energy and Clean Air Forum

The network also front lined the Clean Energy and Clean Air Forum that provided
company drivers with value training on vehicle maintenance and the use of alternative
fuels to promote clean air. On its intranet, employees are always reminded of initiatives
they can undertake to conserve electricity and water and other green practices.
The Numbers Speak

• A total of 20 narra seedlings were planted in the two KSR schools buildings
to protect the area from erosions.

• Mabini Elementary School, 10 Narra Tree Seedlings

• San Fernando Central School, 10 Narra Tree Seedlings

Viz Ardome MAM for Philippines GMA Network

With the recent purchase of Viz Ardome for media asset management, GMA Network
intends to migrate to a tapeless, file-based workflow for greater efficiency. Viz Ardome
is a modular, open, scalable media asset management platform that integrates
seamlessly with Vizrt graphics products, broadcast automation systems, and Petabytes
of media storage.

The Viz Ardome MAM product family represents a proven approach in IT-based media
management with a combination of instant access to content and tight integration with
leading production tools, including newsroom systems, nonlinear editing systems,
traffic, and playout automation. Among the systems that GMA Network plans to
integrate with Viz Ardome are multiple Apple Final Cut Pro editing seats and the Harris
D-Series broadcast automation system currently in use at its network operations centre
in Quezon City in Manila.

GMA Network Chairman, President and CEO Felipe L. Gozon said that the MAMS is part
of the Network’s commitment to produce top quality programs using state-of-the-art
technology. “GMA remains steadfast in acquiring top-of-the-line technologies to
produce high-calibre shows and deliver news and information in the shortest possible
time.” Gozon likewise underscored the importance of the Network’s MAMS project to
the environment. “We have adopted many green practices within our compound. This
time, by going tapeless, we are able to contribute further to the reduction of carbon
footprint. This is part of our corporate social responsibility,” Gozon stated.
