Introduction
ABS-CBN ("Alto Broadcasting System-Chronicle Broadcasting Network")
Corporation formerly known as ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation is a Philippine-
based media conglomerate with interests primarily in, but not limited to television and
radio broadcasting. It is the Philippines' largest media and entertainment conglomerate.
Its subsidiaries and associates are engaged in cable and direct-to-home (DTH)
television distribution and telecommunications services overseas, movie production,
audio recording and distribution, video/audio post production, and film distribution. The
company is organized into three business activities: broadcasting, cable and satellite,
and other businesses. The broadcasting segment is principally the television and radio
broadcasting activities, which generates revenue from sale of national and regional
advertising time. Cable and satellite business primarily develops and produces
programs for cable television, including delivery of television programming outside the
Philippines through its DTH satellite service, cable television channels and blocked time
on television stations. Other businesses include movie production, consumer products
and services.
ABS-CBN is in the business of producing world-class entertainment, news and
information programs and in the continuous adoption of breakthrough technology to
deliver these to its audiences not just in the Philippines, but globally.
ABS-CBN’s flagship station is in Mega Manila, ABS-CBN Channel 2. Backed by
a regional network of 25 originating stations, 8 affiliates, and a collection of strategically-
located relay stations across the archipelago, ABS-CBN’s nationwide reach is
unmatched to this day. It also operates the country’s leading radio network consisting of
3 AM band stations and 14 in the FM band.
The missions of ABS-CBN are:
 We exist in the service of Filipinos worldwide, as well as of all humankind.
 We exist to inform and to entertain through creative content for any
distribution platform.
 We innovate, diversify and expand into enterprises where our expertise in
content opens new business and service opportunities.
 We bring out the best in the Filipino, and reflect true Filipino sentiment.

1
ABS-CBN Corporation’s commitment to its mission of service to the Filipino is
reflected in the business endeavors the Company has undertaken through the years. Its
strength in the creation of empowering and uplifting content, combined with its
unparalleled ability to deliver this to Filipinos wherever they may be, is evidenced by the
market leadership of its businesses in their own respective industries.
ABS-CBN Corporation was founded on 1946 as Bolinao Electronics Corporation
(BEC) by James Linderberg. In 1967, the corporate name was changed to ABS-CBN
Broadcasting Corporation and eventually in 2010 it was changed to ABS-CBN
Corporation, after dropping the broadcasting name.
At present, Eugenio L. Lopez III is the Chairman of the Board of Directors and
Chief Executive Officer and Ma. Rosario Santos-Concio is the President and Chief
Operating Officer.
The network's main broadcast facilities, news headquarters, transmitter and
satellite operations and studio complex are located at the ABS-CBN Broadcasting
Complex at Sgt. Esguerra Ave., Mother Ignacia St., Barangay Laging Handa, Diliman,
Quezon City.

II. Historical Background

A. Beginnings
June 13, 1946. ABS-CBN was founded as Bolinao Electronics Corporation
(BEC) by James Lindenberg, the father of Philippine television, an ex-GI and
electronics engineer who went into radio equipment assembly and radio
broadcasting.

1951. Lindenberg partnered with Antonio Quirino, brother of then President

Elpidio Quirino, in order to try their hand at television broadcasting.

2
1952. BEC was renamed as Alto Broadcasting System or ABS. Lindenberg
shifted Bolinao to radio broadcasting with DZBC and masterminded the
introduction of television to the country in 1953.

1953. It became the second commercial television broadcaster in Asia, after

Japan, and the first in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

B. Merger
September 24, 1956. The Chronicle Broadcasting Network (CBN) was
organized. The network was owned by Don Eugenio Lopez Sr.

1957. Don Eugenio acquired ABS from Quirino and Lindenberg.

1958. The network's new headquarters at Roxas Boulevard was inaugurated,

and all radio and television operations were consolidated into its two buildings,
the radio stations at the Chronicle Building at Aduana Street, Intramuros, Manila,
and the TV operations at the brand new Roxas Boulevard building in Pasay City.

June 14, 1961. Eugenio Lopez, Jr. built the first provincial TV station in Cebu
airing 4 hours.

November 1966. Color broadcasts started, the first in the Philippines and
Southeast Asia as the network was tagged as the First in Color Television, with
full color broadcasting beginning in 1971 at all national television stations.

February 1, 1967. The corporate name was changed to ABS-CBN Broadcasting

Corporation (before it was named ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, the name
was reverted back to the precursor of the network, Bolinao Electronics
Corporation or BEC).

3
December 18, 1968. ABS-CBN opened
its new Broadcast Center on Bohol
Avenue, Quezon City, where it still stands
today. At the time, it was the most
advanced facility of its kind in Asia.

1969. The station again made breakthroughs by

using live satellite transmissions from abroad,
foremost of which was the first moon landing in
1969 and in the 1968 Summer Olympics in
ABS-CBN logo (1967-1972)
Mexico the year before.

1970. The network owned and operated 2 national television and 12 regional
television stations, 6 national radio and 15 regional radio stations nationwide.

C. Martial Law Era

September 22, 1972. The station suffered a setback, though, upon the
declaration of martial law. A day after the declaration of Martial Law, ABS-CBN
and its affiliate stations were seized. Geny Lopez, the president of the network,
was imprisoned and held without trial for five years. The network itself was taken
over by Roberto Benedicto, a presidential crony, who used the Broadcasting
Center at Bohol Avenue, then renamed as "Broadcast Plaza", as the home of
MBS-4. At the height of the People Power Revolution, military reformists,
believing that television would be a powerful tool to aid the revolution, attacked
and took over the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center.

February 24, 1973. Former ABS-CBN talents put the station back on the air and
televised the drama of the unfolding uprising, thereby contributing to the strength
of the revolt.

4
D. After the Marcos Regime
February 28, 1986. Geny Lopez
returned to the country after his
self exile to the United States
and started rebuilding what was
left of the station. Recovery was
difficult and resources were low
hence, former ABS-CBN
employee Freddie M. Garcia was
brought in to rework the station's
Original ABS-CBN logo (1986-2000) programming.

March 1, 1987. Channel 2 was relaunched with the live musical special, "The
Star Network: Ang Pagbabalik Ng Bituin" (The Return of the Star) which noted for
the famous numerical white tri-ribbon channel 2 logo laced with a white
rhomboidal star (from 1988-1992 the ribbons were tri-colored in red, green and
blue) as a centerpiece of the network's revival to return its glory days.

1996. Former ABS-CBN president Eugenio Lopez III became the chairman of the
network.

2003. It is the station's golden (50 th) anniversary. It launched its present slogan,
"Kapamilya" (literally means "a member of the family").

2008. ABS-CBN celebrated its 55th year in television.

August 18, 2010. The corporate name was changed to ABS-CBN Corporation,
after dropping the broadcasting name.

5

B. BANTAY KALIKASAN

Environment
Bantay Kalikasan: Paving the way for a better environment

Bantay Kalikasan (Nature Watch) started on July 21, 1998. It is a media-based

project supported by a multi-sector network of government agencies, private institutions,
and non-government organizations. It was launched to serve as a catalyst in addressing
the concern over the worsening state of the Philippine environment characterized by air
and water pollution, denudation of forests, irresponsible waste disposal and their life-
threatening effects. Originally, Bantay Kalikasan started as a radio program in DZMM,
addressing environmental problems raised by its listeners.
Bantay Kalikasan committed itself to undertake and catalyze initiatives by
maximizing media resources to help ensure an actively protected, adequately
rehabilitated, and sustainably developed environment. Its current objectives are as
follows:

18
 Develop and implement strategic environmental projects;
 Raise public consciousness on environmental issues and concerns;
 Provide a venue for publicizing and addressing environmental issues,
problems and similar concerns; and
 Urge the effective enforcement of relevant environmental policies and laws.

To date, Bantay Kalikasan has the following projects:

 Bantay Kalikasan Hotline
The Bantay Kalikasan hotline service is a community service corporate
social responsibility activity.
In 2008, a total of 30 cases were handled: 40% - Solved; 47% -
Archived/Dormant; 13% - Active.

 Save the La Mesa Watershed Project (consists of the La Mesa Eco-Park

and La Mesa Nature Reserve)
Year 2006 saw more than 5 million Filipinos defending the La Mesa
Watershed. Led by Bantay Kalikasan, the La Mesa Coalition started a
signature campaign that would stop a proposed housing project within the
watershed. Within a few months, the coalition gathered more than 5 million
signatures, with the majority coming from the youth.
The dream of reviving the sole remaining forest in Metro Manila is now
a reality. After ten years of Bantay Kalikasan’s hardwork, passion and
sacrifices, the grim past of La Mesa Forest is now unnoticeable. Everyone’s
efforts in rehabilitating La Mesa has strengthened its function as Metro
Manila’s carbon sink.
The project is actually for environmental safety purposes and a
community redevelopment activity. The project has the following advantages:
 Cleaner air for Metro Manila. It is estimated that around 3% of the
carbon dioxide in the M.M. air shed is sequestered by the La Mesa
forest.

19
 Helped provide sustained drinking water for Metro Manila. The La
Mesa Watershed can supply around 5% of the total requirement of
M.M. or equivalent to 2 weeks supply.
 La Mesa provided employment to around 220 people in the various
watershed development activities.
La Mesa Eco-Park and La Mesa Nature Reserve have been
successfully fulfilling its mission of spreading environmental awareness,
especially to its growing number of anticipators.

 Bantay Baterya, Bantay Langis

Bantay Baterya and Bantay Langis are concerned in the
materialization of Bantay Kalikasan and its partners’ commitment to the
proper disposal and recycling of hazardous wastes, specifically, used lead
acid batteries and used oil. These programs are for environmental safety.
A total of 400,000 kilograms of used lead acid batteries & 20,000 liters
of used oil have been donated to Bantay Kalikasan. This translates to
300,000 kilogram of lead recovered: a significant decrease from toxic wastes.
Lead is said to be the culprit of diseases like sterility, insomnia, respiratory
diseases, gastritis, kidney & liver damage and mental retardation. 60,000
liters of sulfuric acid, a fresh/surface water contaminant, are recovered. With
huge amount of toxic wastes acquired, 586 m3 of landfill space is saved.

 Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig: Reviving the Lifeline of our Nation
The Pasig River is a 27-kilometer body of water that traverses across
Metro Manila and connects Laguna de Bay to Manila Bay. Once a major
transport route, source of water and thriving ecosystem, the river is intimately
connected to Philippine history. Today, it is one of the most polluted and toxic
river systems in the Philippines. This is the reason why the ABS-CBN
Foundation Inc. made a step to restore the Pasig River and make it as clean
and beautiful as before. This rehabilitation of the river is a Community
Redevelopment activity.

20
ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. has
taken on a new challenge:
rehabilitating the Pasig River and its
tributaries through Kapit Bisig Para sa
Ilog Pasig (KBPIP)—a partnership
between AFI and the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR) through the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC). It was
formally launched in February 24, 2009.
KBPIP’s goal is to rehabilitate the river waters in seven years so that
eventually, fish and shellfish can be propagated, wildlife can thrive, and
people can swim and navigate around it. KBPIP targets zero toxic input to the
Pasig River by controlling pollution at source. There are Clean River Zones
(CRZs) all over the 47 tributaries of the Pasig River which pass through
Quezon City, Mandaluyong, Taguig, Makati, Manila, Marikina, Pasig, and San
Juan.
A
CRZ, as
main
strategy of
the project,
includes and
encourages
community
based solid
waste
management
by installing Material Recover Facility (MRF) in the community. Equipments
such as biodigester, plastic and organic shredder, and styro oven will help to
recover the waste and become income generating products.
Vermicomposting facilities, which use worms to decompose organic wastes

21
and convert it to organic fertilizer, will also be put up in an MRF. To date,
there are already three CRZs with MRFs. These are the sites in Mandaluyong
City, Polytechnic University of the Philippines Sta. Mesa and Jaime Cardinal
Sin Village in Punta, Sta. Ana. KBPIP has begun earnest rehabilitation efforts
in Estero de Paco for 2009. To date, 211 families have been relocated to
Montalban and 30 families to Calauan.

 Save Palawan Movement: ANTI-MINING IN PALAWAN: VOTE NO TO

MINING IN PALAWAN! Save the country’s “Last Frontier”
Palawan has 17 key bio diversity sites - which means it is part of the
70% bio diversity sites which are essential for sustaining life in the planet. It
has 2 world heritage sites, and 8 protected sites. Palawan is composed of
82% mountain. It means that if the forest gets denuded and the minerals
excavated - the tailings seep directly into the sea affecting the coral reefs.
The top soil is thin - and the island’s ecosystem is fragile.
Mining as an economic path in a magnificent "Last Frontier" is based
on a paradigm of economic growth that is myopic and archaic. In this age of
climate change and global warming any economic development that does not
recognize and revere the web of life should be thrown in the dustbin.
The ABS-CBN is promoting a ten-million signature campaign program
to Stop Mining in Palawan. The richness of Palawan is the wealth and pride of
the country; it is the wealth of the world. This Anti-Mining in Palawan Program
is under the Environmental Safety social responsibility of ABS-CBN.

 Magandang Pilipinas Eco Tourism Project

This project is a philanthropic type of corporate social responsibility.
This aims to help put up ecotourism sites in the country and also cooperatives
for the poor people.
Through Community-Based Sustainable Tourism (CBST), Bantay
Kalikasan has launched five sites in Puerto Princesa—Brgy. Tulingan
Fishermen’s Association, Inc., Bacungan Coastal, Honda Bay Boatowners

22
Association, Inc., Iwahig Community Ecotourism Association, and Bacungan
Coastal Development Residents Association, Inc. With these sites,
responsible ecotourism as well as income for the locals are assured. The
country’s very own Region V has a lot of ecotourism sites to offer in Sorsogon
and Masbate that will be launched in 2009.

 Other SR Activities
 H2Hope
H2Hope widens its focus from raising funds for La Mesa
Watershed through photographs, to organizing the first-ever Ride with
Pride: The First Eco-Biking Challenge to Protect the La Mesa
Watershed. Ride with Pride attracted 197 bikers and 13 company
donors.
This project continues to work with ABS-CBN Licensing, S-
Point, National Bookstore and Star Point to produce beautiful items
such as note cards, greeting cards, organizers and calendars, with La
Mesa photos.

 AdvocaSea
It was launched on November 2008 in Cebu. This project aims
to save the marine biodiversity through capturing underwater’s
beautiful sceneries in photographs. Underwater photos taken by
distinguished photographers will be sold and proceeds will go for
sustainability of Bantay Kalikasan’s projects.

C. E-MEDIA

Education
E-Media: Pioneering in educational television

23
E- Media is a tool for national progress as it invests in the development of
children’s education and values for a better future. It is seen and heard in the broadcast
media and has maximized its medium by bringing its programs to schools all over the
country.
The ABS-CBN Foundation's E-Media began when it first started producing an
elementary science television program, Sineskwela, in 1994. Through the show, ABS-
CBN Foundation, Inc. (AFI) hoped to supplement science education in schools across
the Philippines. The following year, a values education show called Hirayamanawari
and Bayani, a show on Filipino heroes, were produced and aired. Then came MathTinik,
Epol/Apple (for basic English Language and Expressions), and Pahina, its first show for
the secondary level which focused on various literary pieces.
Through the years, AFI facilitated the
donation of televisions to public schools so
that teachers would be able to implement
television-assisted instruction in their own
classrooms. It also produced Teacher's
Guides which suggested discussion topics and
activities for
teachers using the program episodes. Along with
these, a Research Department, which is responsible
for gathering data and feedback to help determine the
viewers' needs and ways in which E-Media can
improve, was established. A Teacher Training Unit was

24
likewise created to provide technical support for the teachers and parents who use the
shows to supplement their youngsters' education.
From educational television, AFI went into educational radio. In 1996, Bago 'Yan,
Ah!, a radio program on science and technology started airing over DZMM. In six short
years, AFI's E-Media has produced six multi-awarded shows internationally and locally
acclaimed for both television and radio.
The E-Media has the following programs for the community:
 Educational Television (ETV)
This project under the E-Media is a Philanthropic activity. The E-Media
produces educational television (ETV) programs and disseminate them to
various elementary schools nationwide for classroom learning. To date, it has
10 shows on various academic subjects. Selected episodes are available in
DVD format and are widely used as reference materials in thousands of
public elementary schools. For better utilization, trainings for teachers are
conducted regularly. The ETV DVD packages have reached 23% of public
elementary schools nationwide. To date, this translates to almost 8,900
schools in the country. ETV lessened and eased the workload of the
teachers. Positive values among the viewers were promoted. Improved
classroom behavior and subject-related attitudes were also observed.

 Entrepskwela, Climate Change, Basta Sports, and Cookulit

The E-Media produced the following new videos for the increased
welfare of the public: Entrepskwela, a livelihood training program of ABS-CBN
Bayan Foundation, Inc.; Climate Change, a disaster risk reduction video;
Basta Sports, a unique show about games and sports for the youth of today;
and a pilot episode of Cookulit, a cooking show for kids. This is a Social
Responsibility activity under Community Service since it provides the viewers
with information in the form of videos for easier accessibility.

 Adopt-Your-Hometown School Campaign

25
The Adopt-Your-Hometown School Campaign was launched in 1998 in
San Francisco, California, USA in response to the clamor of Filipino
organizations and individuals in the US that were interested in making their
hometowns as a beneficiary of fundraising activities. Hence, this project is
under Philanthropy. The campaign encourages Filipinos to “adopt” public
schools by providing them educational television (ETV) packages to make
educational shows (Sineskwela, MathTinik, Hirayamanawari, Bayani and
Epol/Apple) accessible in their schools.
  Bago 'Yan Ah! Radio Program
Bago ‘Yan Ah! (BYA!) is an educational radio program that aims to
develop comprehension and appreciation of the youth of science and
technology. It is a Social Responsibility activity that emphasizes on
Community Service. Since 1996, it airs Sundays over DZMM. BYA!
empowers grassroots sector by teaching skills on various fields such as
fisheries and agriculture, biotechnology and nuclear energy among others.

 Schools for Schools Campaign

Schools for Schools or S4S is a campaign that gives opportunities to
university-based organizations to help public elementary schools by providing
them with educational materials. It is a Philanthropic activity. Any school
organization with a forthcoming fundraising activity may register their event
with S4S. By registering, the organization is given the opportunity to choose
from a roster of public elementary schools in Bicol, Samar, Leyte and Biliran
to help. The chosen school will be the direct beneficiary of their school event
(concert, advance film screening, tiangge, sports event etc.)

 Competency Development Training Program

E-Media, in partnership with the private and government sector,
facilitated Competency Development Training Program among public school
teachers with topics in Science and Mathematics teaching as well as
Supervisory Classroom Management. To date, almost 500 teachers and

26
school heads underwent extensive trainings and workshops to ensure
mastery of Math and Science subjects. This is under Community Service
because the E-Media renders services, through trainings and workshops, to
public school teachers.

 Pilot Schools
In partnership with Globe Asiatique Realty Holdings Corporation, E-
Media conferred state-of-the-art facilities, instructional support packages, and
teacher and administrator trainings to Don Antonio Lee Chi Uan Integrated
School in Xevera, Bacolor, Pampanga. Also, the E-Media provides facilities
and training for teachers in Ambasing Elementary School in Sagada,
Mountain Province. This is under the ABS-CBN’s Philanthropic Social
Responsibility.

D. SAGIP KAPAMILYA

Relief and Rehabilitation

Sagip Kapamilya: Providing Timely Response to Emergencies

Sagip Kapamilya is a program of ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. that extends

emergency humanitarian assistance to families affected by calamities. Sagip Kapamilya
offers relief, rehabilitation and disaster preparedness projects.

27
Sagip Kapamilya has reached out to more
than 47,000 affected families through the provision
of relief, medical assistance, and soup kitchens. It
values the importance of disaster risk reduction
initiatives and is collaborating with partners in
producing instructional videos on disaster
preparedness for school children.
Sagip Kapamilya (SK) was formed in late 2004 in response to a series of
typhoons that left towns damaged and Filipinos in bad need of food, medicines and aid.
The Sagip Kapamilya project operation aimed to gather enough funds and relief for
these Filipino victims. Through its different television channels (ABS-CBN Channel 2,
and The Filipino Channel) SK launched a telethon for a massive appeal for help to
worldwide audiences. These funds were then used to rebuild lives in disaster-affected
communities.
The following programs are extended by the Sagip Kapamilya to the needy:

 Relief Operations
“To alleviate humanitarian sufferings caused by emergencies”—this is
the mission of Sagip Kapamilya. And with the help of many different
institutions both private and public, Sagip Kapamilya has lived up to its goal of
providing immediate, appropriate and timely assistance during emergencies.
This is under the category Community Service.
Sagip Kapamilya
has served affected
individuals of typhoons, fire
incidents, and internal
conflicts. It already helped
a total of 55,570 families
and 32,118 kids in 28
provinces, 19 cities and
146 barangays. It also responded to 20 counts of fire, 9 incidents of typhoon,

28
massive flooding and landslide. Sagip Kapamilya has also saved 5,834
families and 7,783 kids caught in armed-conflict in Mindanao.

 Rehabilitation Projects
Sagip Kapamilya embarks on
rehabilitation projects to "build back better"
the lives of affected families which include
school repairs, malnutrition program for
children, shelter provision, and water
system installations. These rehabilitation
projects are part of the company’s
Community Redevelopment program.
Sagip Kapamilya conceptualized
Sagip Karunungan as a way to help schools and students affected by
disasters. As a member of the Education Cluster spearheaded by the
Department of Education and UNICEF, Sagip Kapamilya promotes
continuous access to education even in times of emergencies through the
provision of books and school supplies. It also facilitated in the classroom
repairs of school hit by disasters in cooperation with the Physical Facilities &
Schools Engineering Division (PFSED) of the Department of Education. Sagip
Kapamilya as well did a series of Christmas activities, called Salamat
Kapamilya Ronda Pasko, in areas affected by the recent disasters.
Rehabilitation
efforts were also
implemented in Bicol. It
constructed a multi-
purpose hall / evacuation
center in Banuang
Gurang, Donsol,
Sorsogon. It participated
in the completion of first 60 houses in the Sagip Kapamilya-Simone of Cyrene

29
Village in Daraga, Albay for Persons with Disability (PWD). There were also
rehabilitation projects for Quezon which are the construction of 76 homes for
the Sagip Kapamilya – Gawad Kalinga Village and the creation of new
livelihood projects in Infanta, Quezon.

 Disaster Risk Reduction Projects

The Philippines is situated where 50% of the world's tropical storms
originate and 80% of the world's earthquake and volcanic eruption occur.
Because of this, it is very important to inculcate in the minds of the people,
especially the children, a culture of disaster preparedness. Disaster Risk
Reduction Projects of ABS-CBN is under Community Service.
Sagip Kapamilya advocates for
disaster preparedness and disaster risk
reduction among Filipino families. In
answer to call for preparedness, Sagip
Kapamilya produces educational videos
on disaster risk reduction called "Handa
Ka Na Ba?" with episodes on topics
regarding earthquake, typhoon, and
climate change. At the same time, Sagip Kapamilya also tours different
schools to inculcate disaster preparedness among Filipino students.

E. BAYANIJUAN

Community Development
Bayanijuan: Rebuilding the Philippines One Community at a Time

30
Synergizing ABS-CBN Foundation's programs into one efficient program - that is
what Bayanijuan is all about. With the strength of Bantay Bata, Bantay Kalikasan, E-
Media, and Sagip Kapamilya, communities are assured of a holistic development.
Bayanijuan was launched in June 2008, concurrent with ABS-CBN Broadcasting
Corporation's 55th year in television.
Bayanijuan began its efforts in Bicol - considered as one of the hardest-hit
provinces when it comes to natural disasters like typhoons, floods and mudslides.
Eventually, Bayanijuan extended its reach to other areas in the Philippines. Bayanijuan
also seeks external program partners who help them build capacities and bring efforts
to scale much faster. When all hands are working together as a community then the
ABS-CBN Foundation's goal of empowering every Filipino can be fully achieved.

Bayanijuan offers the following outreach programs:

 Focus on Health
One of the monumental
projects of Bayanijuan is the feeding
program for malnourished children
through Bantay Bata’s Bantay
Kalusugan. This Community Service
activity emphasizes inexpensive yet
nutritious food served to the children
for six months. Bayanijuan already fed more than 5,969 children with 5,007
children (88%) reaching the normal nutritional status.

 Focus on Disaster Rehabilitation

Bayanijuan, through Sagip Kapamilya, has helped distribute much-
needed bags of rice to over 2000 families affected by disasters and conflicts.
It also rebuilt schools that were hit by typhoons in Bicol. Forty-nine
classrooms, 14 toilets, school fence and water systems were repaired.
Houses also turned over to forty families. The disaster rehabilitation was
included in its Community Redevelopment activities.

31
 Focus on Education
Another chief concern for Bayanijuan is enhancing the educational
performance of children. This Philanthropic activity is in connection to the E-
Media’s Educational Television (ETV) program. ETV materials have been
turned over to a total of 110 schools in Bayanijuan communities.

 Focus on the Environment

Aside from focusing on the Filipino child, Bayanijuan assisted
environmental initiatives for schools and communities. This program involves
Community Redevelopment in certain areas in the Philippines. In Bicol,
material recovery facilities (MRFs)—where solid wastes are sorted and
recycled—have been put up in two sites. Nurseries were also built, where
plants such as vegetables and fruit-bearing trees are propagated for the
community’s use. It also helped in setting-up vermicomposting systems in
Albay, Camarines Sur, and Navotas. Vermicomposting uses worms to convert
organic wastes such as food and kitchen wastes into a highly-nutrient
fertilizer. On 2009, Bayanijuan focused in Calauan, Laguna—where the
relocatees from Pasig River and esteros are resettled. Bayanijuan in Calauan
provided shelter, livelihood, child welfare, environmental initiatives,
microfinance, and disaster risk reduction programs to the relocated families.
New Bayanijuan sites will also be put up in Iba, Zambales and Sagada, Mt.
Province.

F. CHILDREN’S CENTER

Education
Children’s Center: A Better World for Our Children

The ABS-CBN Children's Center is a progressive school that aims to develop

well-rounded children in a nurturing and child-friendly environment. Its philosophy is

32
rooted on the understanding of the way young children learn. Thus, its curriculum is
specifically designed to focus on particular milestones that a certain age group is
undergoing.
It formulates the children's environments, activities, and routines by looking at
their needs and development. In doing so, it is able to fulfill the children’s individual
potentials. This Children’s Center is a Philanthropic activity since the ABS-CBN
Foundation financed the construction of a school, and a Community Service activity
since it is doing some efforts in educating the children.
The center believes that developing the children’s social and emotional skills
enable them to do better with their academic performance. This is seen through many
creative experiences and day-to-day learning given to the children by their teachers.
Daily routines are integrated into the curriculum through the different subject areas,
namely: Math, Science, Language, Reading, Music and Art.
It provides its learners with programs that are educationally rich and
developmentally sound. It is the hope of the Children’s Center to give them a positive
introduction to school, derive pleasure from their interactions and become curious,
outgoing and independent children. Its aim is not only to teach the children become
good learners but also become socially responsive citizens. It educates the minds and
hearts of children that will make this world a better place to live in.

G. ABS-CBN BAYAN FOUNDATION

ABS-CBN Bayan Foundation: Microfinance Institution

The ABS-CBN Bayan Foundation is a social and enterprise development

institution (Philanthropy) dedicated to building the nation from below through
entrepreneurship, education, and community development and rehabilitation
(Community Redevelopment). Its intervention does not end in providing economic

33
opportunities alone. ABS-CBN Bayan is also into educating micro entrepreneurs to
equip them and their family members with skills necessary to start and grow their
enterprises.
Bayan Microfinance, formed in 1997, provided livelihood opportunities to poor but
enterprising Filipinos. The Bayan Microfinance became a separate non-profit
organization in 2000 and was renamed ABS-CBN Bayan Foundation, Inc. (Bayan) to
suitably reflect the financial and non-financial services it offers. ABS-CBN Bayan
Foundation has veered away from the mainstream practices and consciously struck a
balance between microfinance's nature of sustainability and social dimension. No longer
being commonly known as a mere microfinance institution, Bayan has dedicated itself in
building the Filipino nation through bolstering social and enterprise development, and
democratizing entrepreneurship and education while maintaining its microfinance
operations as an effective tool for building enterprises and not as an end.
At present, ABS-CBN Bayan has expanded its services and programs through its
growing network of partners such as corporations, development organizations,
government agencies, microfinance institutions and educational institutions. Its
community rehabilitation and development initiatives have been extended to the
disaster prone areas in the Pacific Rim areas of the country.
