UNSAFE TRANSPORTATION OF WORKERS

HSE BULLETIN PREVENT ACCIDNET,

There have been a number of serious incidents on the project due to unsafe transportation of workers. IOCL, CISF, MPMC and Consultants are pursing a vigorous campaign to improve this situation and reduce the high risk of serious and frequent incidents that this practice can lead to. A safe mode of transport for all workers to and from work is essential. Major Hazards in Unsafe Transportation: Overloading will give the driver less control of the vehicle, which could result in collision. Collision and/or sudden or heavy braking could cause the vehicle to roll over or workers to fall out of the vehicle. Workers being struck by overhead obstructions or extended loads from other vehicles.

Key Safety Requirments: 1. Buses are the safest way to transport workers to the site. 2. Driver of the bus should be qualified and competent. 3. Drivers should strictly follow the speed limits and all other traffic rules inside & outside the Refinery . 4. All workers should be seated with seat belts fastened (where provided). 5. All doors must be closed and latched while the vehicle is in motion. 6. Do not overcrowd the bus by allowing workers to stand or carry construction materials. 7. Never offload workers on to the road. 8. Never use trucks tractors or any other open vehicles to transport workers. 9. Employer should monitor the vehicle conditions periodically.
